Now, fantasy is a tough genre to break into, but i'm mildly surprised that this series by Resnick is not better known.

It has a realistic world, finely crafted characters, and a decent plot.

I will be the first to admit that it's not prime literary material, and the cover art looks like a bad romance novel, but it's a good yarn. Maybe i'm biased because i've read it at a young age, but now when i look back at it, it does fill me with nostalgia.

For me, the book has a strange rounded feel that all good stories have, the ones you read for entertainment and not to study on the art of writing.

Has anyone else read these books? I'm sure at least some people hate it. From what i've seen, Resnick's current works are...not enticing.

I've read the series, and I'm now re-reading it. This is among my favorites. Some of the best story-telling ever. Plot, character development, imagination... Didn't check out her stuff lately, I'll have to. You're right that original cover for In Legend Born looks bad, romance novel-like as you said, but she used to write those before, so that makes sense. I felt In Legend Born was better as well than its sequels, although I'll have to re-read them. Hope that book wasn't her greatest work, and it's gone downhill from there. I felt that way about Villains By Necessity, also a great book but it didn't become popular, the author writing one more (crappy) novel and fading into obscurity. Very sad...
