So Yeah, I've started watching the show again. I got a rather dull impression from most of the Hoenn/Battle Frontier arc, but now that I've started watching the D/P episodes I've been surprised at how every episode I've seen so far has managed to be interesting. The plot feels stronger than I recall, with a much higher character recurrence quotient.

Anyways! With almost 600 episodes, there's surely something worth discussing.

I still think the best scene in the whole anime is the one at the start of the one with the Pokemon academy in the first season where the gang is just walking along and their faces pop up in little bubbles to show them talking and Misty is like "my name might be misty, but I'm still pretty clear in the head" and Pikachu is all being WHACKY with his bubble and being all like "look at me look at me I'm the real star of the show yo".

@Fawriel: I think I somehow remember that. O_o

.

Unrelatedly, I do not wish to ruin what reputation I have by saying what my favorite part of the anime is. Just had to say that.

And it just gets even more awesome when we do hit 600 — Ash vs. Paul in a two part full battle?! Hell yeah...

I enjoy the Team Rocket motto sequence, even after all this time. I admit, I still prefer the old motto, but the new one's still decent. Perhaps even more epic in scope, just not nostalgic...

The subversions are fun, too.

Jessie: Prepare for trouble from beyond the skies!
James: From beyond the stars, a nasty surprise!
Jessie: An evil as old as the galaxy...
James: ...sent here to fulfill our destiny!
Meowth: Plus, there's me!
Jessie: To denounce the evils of truth and love!
James: To extend our reach to the stars above!
Jessie: Jessie!
James: And James!
Meowth: And Meowth are the names!
Jessie: Anywhere there's peace in the universe...
James: Team Rocket...
Meowth: ...Will be there...
All: To make everything worse!
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!

It sucks to no end...

Isn't it ironic that the fandom is so quick to complain about change while constantly ragging on the franchise for not changing enough?

The games are actually quite well designed, enjoyable games, so people

 * are getting tired of them releasing the exact same game over and over with more Pokémon each time. They have the potential for so much more.

The anime, by contrast, is chiefly enjoyed for its nostalgia value, so people

 * would rather it wasn't butchered.

I realise, this is archetypal Fan Dumb behaviour.

If you have a car with a horrible engine and great chassis, you change the engine, not the chassis.

Bobby G: It was changed twice. The first time was the Battle Frontier arc, and again in Sinnoh. First motto was given a terrific callback in a recent episode however (as well as a good chunk of things from Kanto).

Well, the original was So Bad, It's Good anyway.

Whatever.

I liked the first bunch of episodes because they were really filled with lots of Crowning Moments Of Heartwarming.

Then again, after so long, they kinda do need more competent villains, and more competent protagonists. I have no clue what it's like now; I haven't seen a single episode since the Johto Journeys.

Yeah, current motto is something like:

Jessie: Listen, is that a voice I hear?

James: It's speaking to me loud and clear...

Jessie: On the wind!

James: Past the stars!

Meowth: In your ears!

(Like the "Prepare for Trouble" bit, the above is often tweaked to reference the context)

Jessie: Bringing chaos at a breakneck pace!

James: Dashing all hope, putting fear in its place!

Jessie: A rose by any other name is just as sweet...

James: When everything's worse, our work is complete!

Jessie: Jessie!

James: James!

Meowth: And Meowth, dat's a name!

Jessie: Putting the do-gooders in their place...

James: ...we're Team Rocket...

...in your face!

(Pokemon chime in)

Anyways, I would recommend watching a few newer episodes. They don't have the same tone as the Kanto ones, but nonetheless feel well-polished to me.

It was pretty good for PUSA's first stab at it.

Comments on the new dub episode: HELL YES, DAN GREEN! I don't think anyone else could've done Byron with that much hot blood. If 4Kids had TTGL (not like that would've happened), he would've made a great Kamina.^_^

Does anyone wonder if the new GS remakes will finally give the much screwed over legendary Ho-Oh an actual chance to shine in the spotlight, as opposed to merely existing as a symbolic presence? It happens to be my favourite legendary, so I hope it gets a good role in the anime sometime.

Yeah, except that it never actually got any episodes or movies dedicated to it, merely showing up as a passing reference. I have a premonition they might be saving it for the end, but that would be a long wait.

The one time we got an episode remotely close to a Ho-Oh episode was Morty's development episode, where they reveal that Ash did indeed see the bird. If they do go on to Johto, it'll be for the new Battle Frontier like they did for Kanto during Fire Red/Leaf Green pimping.

I don't usually watch Pokémon, especially since I'm French and French dubs vary in quality as much as US ones, but I "recently" (read:more than a year ago) watched the one about Sudowoodoo... And I don't know if this name conveys a notion of "fake" in English (and I have no idea about its Japanese name), but the French name "Simularbre" translates back as "Simulatree".

Now can you imagine how ridiculous it is to see two scientists calling a Pokémon by this name, and arguing about it being plant-type or rock-type? If only they had the decency of not naming it until the question was answered...sad

It is the same in English - it's called Sudowoodo (pseudo = fake, wood = plant fibre), but at least it's misspelled, making it slightly less obvious.

It's Japanese name is a similar pun, IIRC.

The epic full battle reached its conclusion — Paul beat Ash with 4 Pokemon remaining, and Ash is going into a temporary Heroic BSoD in the next episode. Wouldn't blame him, this was his big chance to prove his rival wrong and he failed. At least Chimchar evolved...

Can I just say that way back in the day when I was into Pokemon, the cartoon was one of the first things that started killing my interest in the franchise? I mean I was in fifth grade and all but even then I thought that Bye Bye Butterfry episode was beyond stupid, and here's why: up until that episode, you've been beaten over the head with HOW VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT THE BOND BETWEEN A POKEMON AND ITS TRAINER IS AND HOW ITS THE TRUE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP and all that jazz and how inspirational Ash's friendship with Pikachu is and then everybody goes and does a 180 and suddenly its YOU'VE GOT TO LET BUTTERFRY GO, ASH! ITS THE NATURAL ORDER! And then...the series goes back to status quo (as far as I could tell, I haven't watched the show in years). Seriously, Bye Bye Butterfry is the Broken Aesop that heralds the world-crushing Broken Aesop of the first movie. Its like Silver Surfer heralding Galactus except instead of everybody on Earth dying, its just kind of stupid.

I do still like the old Toshihiro Ono comics; Misty, her sisters, and Sabrina are total hotties in those tongue
