Okay, I don't fuckin' -get it-.

In the preface to the short story bundle King published that had this one in it (the preface was written by a different author, I don't bloody remember which one), he described this story as the scariest in the bundle, even though there's no hint of the supernatural.

I read it. It didn't scare me - which isn't a slam on King (THOU ART MASTER), but on the story itself.

Somebody on King's trope page put it under "Tear Jerker", along with "The Woman In The Room" (didn't read that one).

I read it. It didn't make me feel particularly sad, just bored.

So, what the fuck is supposed to be so horifically scary/fantastically sad about "The Last Rung On The Ladder"?

Incidentally, I'm making my way through Gerald's Game, and I have readily shit my pants. Good one, that.

Always touching and looking. Piss off.
