Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

"Can a character from a You Tube Poop qualify as a complete monster if the YTP in question treated the character seriously in-universe. The example I'm talking about is the version of Mr. Krabs from Mr. Krabs' Unquenchable Blood Lust. Again, it should be noted that Mr. Krabs' actions in this certain You Tube poop are taken very seriously. In fact, it plays out more as a horror film than a true YTP. In this YTP, Mr. Krabs becomes a Serial Killer after he poisoned the health inspector from the Nasty Patty episode, because he thought he wasn't going to pay him for the food. He later forces Sponge Bob to help him hide the body, and he later massacres two police officers and then burned their car just to ensure that he got away with the health inspector's murder. Mr. Krabs later started to develop a lust for killing, and became insane. The next day at the Krusty Krab, Squidward noticed that Krabs was acting rather strange, and he and Sponge Bob promptly tie him up and call the police and the Navy on him. Krabs then angrily vowed that he would have Squidward's and Sponge Bob's rear ends mounted on his wall for turning him over to the police. While in jail, he murders the guards, and escapes through the sewer line. He then arrived to Squidward's home and murdered him with an axe while he was taking a bath. When news of Squidward's murder ravaged through Bikini Bottom, Sponge Bob and Patrick fled Bikini Bottom out of fear of Krabs killing them, only to have Krabs catch up to Patrick, and murder him. He then goes into Sponge Bob's house, and he was wearing Patrick's skin at the time. Sponge Bob then ends Krabs' murder spree by blowing themselves up with a bomb strapped to his chest."

He sure was pretty horrifying in this video, wasn't he?

Random bit of trivia. Someone on Youtube made a video called "The (real) Lion King", where they used various footage of real animals set to the movie. A lot of the clips they used for the lions came from Pride.

I've seen that You Tube video before, and all I can say is that by no means is Mr. Krabs played for laughs. In-universe, Mr. Krabs is presented as a Serial Killer, and it treats his kills as something to be taken as serious. In fact, it's hardly a YouTube Poop at all; it's more like a horror film than anything else. Thumbs up for the Krabs from the Bloodlust video.

In further news, what should I change about the Damien entry? I'm open to anyone having any other ideas of how to improve the article.

I hate the idea of fan remixes being enshrined next to the works they are taken from. It's stupid; anyone can remix anything to make any character look like a CM, just like anyone can write a Dark Fic to make Rainbow Dash into a serial killer.

In the absolute maximum case, we list Krabs from that YTP on its YMMV page only.

Does it even have a work page? I didn't hear that question get answered.

I'm wary of letting it pass, since that could open the doors to assholes just taking characters we've rejected for having redeeming qualities and then redoing the work just without those moments.

Technically speaking, we don't have a rule that says "a work needs to have a page here before we can list examples of a given trope from it".

Anyhoo, You Tube Poop-like material is often comedic in its nature, so you'd have to demonstrate that it isn't Played for Laughs.

I'm in the "only if it has a work page" should it be possible. I don't believe in the whole "a fan fiction is purely connected to the work so couldn't have a CM due to the original world, but not the fan fiction's, standards." If a work establishes a dark enough world for it, that should honestly be good enough entirely.

...It's weird having so many websites and no way to properly display now, lol.

I've watched the YTP!Mr. Krabs video and I'm voting no. It just comes across as so ridiculous a premise and so over-the-top that I can't see it as anything other than a parody. It's just too ridiculous to take seriously.

I kinda want to try my hand at suggesting one just to see what others think. He's the main villain from my most hated JRPG of all time - Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.

His name is Lucifer/Luther Lansfeld.

Who is the he?

He is the head of the Sphere Corporation and the creator of the Eternal Sphere, the MMO where the game takes place. (the "game" being a universe full of sentient, sapient creatures)

What does he do?

At first he sends in the Executioners, a group meant to wipe out all life in the Milky Way Galaxy. They destroy countless Federation ships, colonies and planets, including Earth. They also massacred other whole systems of races, including the Aldian Empire. After this Luther decides erasing the Milky Way isn't enough and attempts to erase the entire universe.

Any Freudian Excuse, redeeming qualities, or other mitigating factors?

Apart from being a complete egomaniac and moron, not really. I suppose he goes kinda crazy at the end when he attempts to delete the universe but that's entirely his own fault. He flat-out refuses to believe, in the face of all logic and reason and his own sister's words, that the heroes are living, breathing and thinking beings. He's a complete racist really.

How does he match up by the standards of the setting?

Well I hear the 12 Wisemen in SO 2 attempted to destroy the universe...not sure about that though. The "main villain" in SO 4 wanted to erase the current universe and replace it with a new one. However, on account of being the creator of the Eternal Sphere, Luther wields power unprecedented in the series. I'm pretty sure the breadth of destruction he did accomplish surpasses anything in the 4th game...maybe 1 and 2 as well

Verdict

He's a shitty character from a shitty game so maybe I'm overlooking something out of bias. All I remember is he was super full of himself and wanted to kill trillions or quadrillions of sentient creatures just because.

I don't think that Luther counts. Aside from the fact that he only gets a handful of scenes, he doesn't seem to understand that the people he's trying to kill are sentient beings. He comes off as being a horrible person, and he is, but there's no real malice to his actions.
