Can't speak for everyone else, but the thing about the environmentalism that bugs me the most is how Anvilicious it is. Really, people who read Artemis Fowl are maybe eight at the very youngest. They're not preschoolers that need the moral of the story beat into their skulls. A second problem is that the fairies, the patron saints of the environmentalism in the book, have it so easy. They have super-futuristic technology at apparently zero cost to the environment, so they obviously make humans look horrible and cruel by comparison. They don't need DDT to cure malaria, so of course they can complain about how it hurts the animals. They don't need coal to power pretty much everything in their cities, so of course they can talk about how it pollutes the air.

And yeah, Artemis-Holly...it's not working for me. It seems like Colfer broke down this Magnificent Bastard so quickly just so he could fit a mold and make out with the female lead.

never under stood why so many people complain about the People, yes they are mouth piece for the author environment views. but fairies are natural sprits, it part of the job description. They are not ment to be a morally perfect Mary Sue race so it's seem a more little sad that the It Just Bugs Me! page is full of examples of fairy dick moves as if posters are trying to say 'See! see! they are no better than us!'.

Fairies do seem to be Mary Sues.

But they aren't nature spirits, they have super advanced technology! What bugs me is that the fairies can have their cake and eat it too, so they aren't the right spokespeople for environmental issues. Humans may be bastards, but we aren't morons, if there were efficient ways to get our daily power that also didn't pollute the air we breathe, we would jump on it. Colfer doesn't seem to understand that.

And, also if the fairies would just give us their technology then we wouldn't be so bad for the environment. It's like criticizing someone for being illiterate, but making a law forbidding anyone from teaching them to read.

Yeah, they seem to think if they broke the Masquerade we'd immediately blow them up just For the Evulz, when Artemis Fowl (who was still a villain, anti- or not) didn't even do that.

Edit: They don't even have to break the Masquerade. They could just introduce their tech into the human world through Artemis.

Or, if they don't trust Artemis enough for that mission, they could send a fairy to pose as an eccentric, but brilliant human, and then "invent" eco-friendly technology much better then our one. That wouldn't even break the masquerade.

Gaia did not desented from the heavens and give the People green tech and told them to round up every mud person they saw. Fairies have ecologically friendly technology because it was important enough to make sacrifices and developed it'

This not something we as a society are incapable of doing.

But they could make the sacrifice of giving us that. They don't need to suffer from something they don't have to go through.

^^ Um.

We are doing it. Y'know, solar, nuclear, wave, looking into fusion (so far unusable, though,) wind, ethanol, electricity, hybrids...

It's just that for the fairies, they have uber-advanced technology that does not pollute the environment, while at the same time it seems to give them an even better lifestyle than us. They don't have to worry about polluting the environment, because their technology is already 50+ years ahead of us.

But I actually like the book itself. Even though the Magnificent Bastard is severely diluted, it still remains. And it's pretty easy to ignore most of the Green Aesop that he chucks at us...until the Time Paradox, but that wasn't an evil corporation, at least, he was pretty clearly insane, and even the most "anti-earth" person from Captain Planet would raise an eyebrow at him. Most other "save the earth" references are just that- references. They don't play an Anvilicious "THIS MAN IS POLLUTING THE ENVIRONMENT WE MUST DESTROY HIM" role, it's more of a "Oh, come the fuck on, Mud People, another beached whale?" sentiment. That's what Max Ride is for.

Being fair: Colfer obviously isn't good at writing romance. It's alright, though. He's good at other stuff.

^^^ The Atlantis Complex is already out in the UK and the US. I'm not sure about other countries though. I thought it was good. Not my favorite (which is Lost Colony), but better than Time Paradox.

^Artemis/Holly never even seemed like an option to me until Time Paradox came out. I can see Artemis crushing on Holly, but just can't see Holly ever liking Artemis as more than a close friend. I'm not 100% against the pairing, but I don't actively ship it either.
