Paramount has a Naked Gun reboot coming out next year with the writers (Dan Gregor and Doug Man) and director (Akiva Schaffer) of Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022) and Seth MacFarlane producing. Variety says it’ll be out July next year:

Not really sure if Naked Gun is a remake kind of movie.

Besides, there already exists a Naked Gun remake. It's called Angie Tribeca.

Replacing Leslie Nielsen by Liam Neeson… That can’t be a coincidence.

It’s a theatrical comedy film at a time when audiences are demanding more than just superhero movies.

Of course it’s gonna flop!

A comedy film that's riffing specifically on cop films. I'm not sure if that's gonna go over well in the current political climate.

It's also been literally thirty years since the last Naked Gun. Is it even possible to make a film suited for modern sensibilities that can still be meaningfully considered a Naked Gin film?

If they have the same witty humor and funny situations, I don't see a problem with it.

Plus Liam Neeson has been able to do well in comedy roles. He was the cop in The Lego Movie for instance.

I was wondering what was going on with this ever since I read about the Zuckers complaining Paramount blocked them out of the development process.

I always thought Neeson would be a great Frank, because he has the ability to avoid doing any kind of winking, even with incredibly stupid material.

Liam Neeson has needed a Leslie Nielsen-esque shift to comedy for years. This should help with that.

When Liam Neeson's done comedy, he's done pretty good. So this isn't totally out of left field—and the Casting Gag itself is pretty funny already.

I remember not long before Leslie Nielsen passed years ago, they were trying to get a fourth movie off the ground. The goal I think was to bring back everybody except O.J. Simpson of course. George Kennedy at the time I think was barely in anything anymore as it was—and his final film role was at the very beginning of The Gambler 2014.

Leslie Nielsen and George Kennedy were both a big part of what made the Naked Gun movies—I've only seen the first two right now—pretty successful and they've both been gone a while now. Hard to imagine another movie without them or Priscilla Presley. That said, I'm opened to seeing how the attempt goes though certainly.

It's only a matter of time before they remake Police Academy too, and it'll probably fail just as much.

The world, and Hollywood, just aren't the same anymore.

I was thinking that while general comedies have been remade this might be the first out and out parody film to get a remake.

Liam Neeson may seem odd at first glance given his decades long string of Papa Wolf action films, but he's done exceptionally well as The Comically Serious elsewhere and this might be near perfect. Frank Drebin as a Guttural Growler sounds hilarious already.

I'd actually be interested in this film if it's Liam Neeson doing a parody of the types of films he usually does, like if the plot is about him saving his wife or family... only its a comedy.

Since Leslie Nielsen Syndrome is a thing I was wondering if we should have Liam Neeson Syndrome for people who aren't or weren't action stars doing action movies.

...maybe a different name. Neeson has had a quite vivid career, doing the likes of Darkman, Rob Roy and The Phantom Menace before he was heavily dominated by Taken clones.

But possible candidates would be Brendan Fraser (mostly dramas and comedies before The Mummy (1999)) and Matt Damon (mostly dramas before The Bourne Identity).

Worried that the new Naked Gun will be a mixture of the former franchise with all the action films Neeson has done before... probably I will be expecting to see Neeson character jumping in slow motion while the shooters try to shoot him in normal motion... and failing anyway while Neeson feeling tired of the effort to keep the slow motion... XD

Well, I never saw the original, so while everyone's saying this remake pales I'll be able to enjoy it at least somewhat.

Was the original's humor really offensive by today's standards? Genuinely asking, never saw it. Comedy films and standup 20 years ago > comedy films and standup now anyday, but if the original wasn't raunchy or audacious then I'd give this a fair chance.

I'm sure there's a couple pedo jokes in the original films, which was strangely typical of the Zucker Brothers.

If a remake’s being made I least hope they don’t make too many jabs at remakes. Most of the humor from the original still holds today IMO.

Better to fight, than to live in fear.
