Okay, I had an idea for a fantasy ersatz of France that pulls from The French Revolution, but with the aesthetics of the early 20th century and also pulling from the time successive popes came from france (under the rule of Phillip the Fairy for reference)

(Also involving the aristocracy behind descended from the Paladins of Roland fame)

As such I want to ask local historians and experts for help on making these aspects gel well. I'll try to elaborate later.

Keep in mind that the French Revolution was a chaotic mess of political parties since everybody that knew how to run a government was being executed by the government. So you've got the Jacobins, the Royalists, the Plains, the Mountains, and the Girondin politicial parties all arguing over just about everything you can make laws about. You also have members being executed when demagogs rise and decide to eliminate the competition. Revolutionary France didn't get a whole lot done since it tended to undo any law it passed in a year or so.

Anything specific you're looking for?

[up] the tentative details are:

  • A Fantasy Counterpart Culture of France circa the Papauté d'Avignon
  • but with all the political and social issues that led to the need for a revolt in France to begin with, adapted to the context of a theocratic monarchy...
  • and with the aesthetics and tech level (with exceptions I'll suss out later) of the first half of the 20th century (specifically the 20s/30s)
  • and with the aristocracy being entirely descended from the Paladins of Charles.

Ishgard would be an influence as it is a frenchish theocracy (before The end of Heavensward ofc), but it is not sufficient by itself given certain context that would not be in play and that it's regime change was swift and relatively painless compared to la Revolution.

[up] The 'counterpart' part includes the existence of catholicism in your setting? When you say that you want to include the "papacy of Avignon", you mean the actualy papacy (not the functional equivalent in another religion)?

If the answer is yes, then you cannot have a theocratic monarchy. You'll have a monarchy by divine right, which is not the same thing.

If you want a sort of 'French Revolution' occurs in that setting, it is not so far-fetched, but you have to look at the actual political history of 14th century France instead of relying on assumptions about how 'medieval monarchies' worked. 14th century France was neither a (what people usually think as) feudal monarchy nor an absolute monarchy. Try and read something about medieval parliaments, about the city and peasant's revolts of 14th century, about communal governments... it will give you a lot of ideas.

[up]The functional equivalent, to be clear.

Also, will keep that in mind, thanks
