A wick check was done to analyze the use of Uncertain Audience and see if it needed TRS. The results...surprisingly weren't as bad as initially thought, with about 70% of the examples using the trope correctly.

Still, it was suggested by Berrenta in the Wick Check Project thread that we do a short term cleanup for the trope.

If there's anything I can say on this, it's that plenty of examples use it to say "What Do You Mean, It's for Kids? but bad"

Take this from Show Dogs:

  • Uncertain Audience: The big sticking point of the film. It's meant to be a talking animal film for kids, but its preoccupation with oddly sexual jokes (the infamous judge inspection scene being the standout example of this) and a finale that features the threat of a Turbine Blender for our heroes raises questions about how appropriate it is for that audience.

"Pretty sure the audience here is kids, but we don't want a bad film to be What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?, do we? That's only for good movies!" Now, maybe I'm just overthinking things, but considering how much WDYMIFK is treated as a "badge of honor" when in reality it too can be a horribly bad thing makes me feel this way.

I'd say Super Paper Mario's entry can be cut down as the game's YMMV page says while the platformer gameplay wasn't particularly well received, it still feels like the first two games in terms of humor, heart and charm.

Also, for Epic Mickey the page and a couple of others as well say that one of the reasons why the game didn't do well was because of the concept art making the game out to be really Darker and Edgier in stark contrast to the finished game. However, the reason why the finished game is Lighter and Softer is because Warren Spector and his crew showed the original concept art to Mickey Mouse fans and the fans got upset with how radically different the concept art was depicting Mickey Mouse as can be seen here and here.

It would be great if UncertainAudience.Video Games page had folders.

Should it be by genre or by developer/publisher?

Kirby is awesome.

[up] Should be by developer

Found in YMMV.The Patrick Star Show:

  • Uncertain Audience: The Patrick Star Show is a Zany Cartoon aimed at a very young audience, premiering on Nickelodeon in the 2020s. However, a lot of jokes are references to things like telemarketing scams, infomercials, and shows like Night Gallery, The Benny Hill Show, and Masterpiece Theater. It also contains dated parodies of celebrities like Huell Howser and Peter Lorre, so it's not something kids will really understand. "Mid-Season Finale" in particular consists almost entirely of confusing references to shows that only older adults will be familiar with (if at all). The episode also features a hyped-up surprise guest appearance by Bootsy Collins, an artist who, though prolific and still active, saw his heyday in the 1970s & 1980s and is mainly known today among devoted music fans, a group which skews towards adulthood and old age.

Opinions?

[up] I personally think the use of Parental Bonuses as an argument for a show having an Uncertain Audience is a bit iffy, given that many kids' TV shows have such references that children won't recognize.

[up] Exactly. The original Animaniacs had tons of references to old media and adults jokes that kids in the 90s probably wouldn't have gotten, but it's undeniably a kids show first and doesn't have an Uncertain Audience reaction.

I've transferred the entry into Parental Bonus. Not sure what needs to be changed tho.

As the person who added the Patrick Show entry, I do agree with moving it to Parental Bonus. I found these particular jokes odd, but it'd be an exaggeration to say that they make up a majority of the show's humor; it happens once every episode or two. It also helps that the show seems to have gotten more with the times after Growing the Beard, with these obscure references being almost completely gone.

And Spongebob has a known Periphery Demographic, so the Parental Bonus in its spinoff shows makes sense.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.
