Wasn’t seeing a forum thread for this movie so I made one. Page is here, trailer is here:

What do we think? These are the Paddington guys so I’m excited!

It’s giving Fantastic Beasts (unnecessary prequel starring boyish actor in a twee historical setting) and not really in a good way.

I do like Chalamet and love Paddington enough to currently slot it in the “will probably watch when it arrives on streaming, but good word of mouth might drive me to the theaters” tier.

I’m in the “this filmmaker is brilliant and I would follow him to the ends of the earth” camp so I’ll be seeing it. And Chalamet is giving me powerful Ryan Reynolds vibes.

...ok I admit I am usually the first to go "why" but, I'm tickled [lol].

Look at this movie, pretending Oompa-Loompas have a genetic condition that forces them to dance, absolving Willy Wonka of any and all liability for his specifically trained slave labor and entertainment practices.

I can't wait to see the evil corporate chocolate-tagonist of this movie [lol] This is going to be Cruella but without the expectation of the main character being an Alpha Bitch holding the movie down. Wonka is a snarky, idealistic trickster and this is him in his prime.

Good god, Willy made anti-gravity chocolate and the world is gonna be like dang this man's a brilliant candymaker. [lol] Are you serious!? Get Einstein on the horn.

[up] They already introduced the villains. The Chocolate Cartel. They even tried to drown Willy in chocolate.

Everything is so whimsical and magical and seeing it's from the director of the Paddington movies makes it even better. I think Timothée Chalamet will pull off well as Wonka as he's very charismatic and charming as well as the whole cast.

Maybe it's me, but I'm getting Mary Poppins (the OG) vibes with the characters and aesthetic, which makes me wish he was the one to direct a Mary Poppins movie (but since Disney likes to screw their talent, I'm glad he didn't).

My only nitpick I have is the Oompa-Loompa, he doesn't look bad but he looks kinda weird with his whole body being CG and only his face being real.

But overall I'm excited for this movie!

I wonder if they're going to go into the Vermicious Knids as depicted in the sequel book.

Those shits were fucking terrifying.

[up] Oh yeesh… I just googled them…

Well, if they’re aliens, we probably won’t see them. The film is more fantasy than sci-fi.

Great Glass Elevator is mostly just a Random Events Plot of the Buckets plus Wonka going through Dahls most bizarre ideas, so it never getting an adaptation makes sense - there isn't much of a plot there, just... crazy stuff happening. Hey, wanna just do The Thing for a bit? Hey, wanna go through a nightmare version of the afterlfe? Etc.

You can really tell that Dahl used to be a horror writer before going into kids stuff after reading it, though.

I just think we might see the Knids here, because they're always mentioned as part of the Oompa Loompas' backstory, and this being a prequel we might see Wonka meeting the Loompas.

Not really feeling it, honestly. Very promising cast and director, but Wonka needs to be a silly little guy and Jimothy doesn't seem to be pulling it off the way I would've liked.

Yeah uh seems to be the recwprion I got. Timothy is not a great choice for a whimsical role like this and it kind of shows. This sadly seems a miscast

I think it's pretty cool that they seem to be going for a blending of the two Willy Wonka movies in terms of style.

The Tim Burton version probably has one of my favorite Crossing the Line Twice jokes in a movie.

A parent making good on their "Don't think I'll be here when you come back" threat to their acing out child? Awful.

Going the extra mile and not just leaving himself but leaving with the entire house!? Hilarious.

The Depp version is nearly 20 years old and I didn't realise it was that well regarded to start with.

The sequel never gets adapted because Dahl forbid it after seeing the Gene Wilder film iirc.

I've no especial strong feelings one or the other on trailer but I hope Chalamet finds their own voice for it rather than doing an impression of Widler or Depp.

To do list:

  • watch this Paddington
  • rewatch the Tim Burton version that I hated as a kid but came to respect years later
  • keep an eye on this new version
  • watch the Tom & Jerry version

Oh didn't know WB kept the license.

Also it does feel like it's an amalgamation of both the 50's and 00's Chocolate Factory.

Timmy Tims does have silly guy energy, it's just...the wrong kind? He comes across as very twee, which might work considering this is a "from the creators of Paddington" joint, but for Wonka you usually want someone who feels like they're barely-restrained-manic. (Lakeith Stanfield was a fairly popular countersuggestion when the casting for this was announced.)
