...That's for characters in-universe.

[up][up]No, it is a piece of media, not accepted in his hometown would be a character not being accepted in their in universe hometown. I dont want to be rude but you seem a bit averse to putting this as an example. Why is that?

EDIT: Got [nja]'d AGAIN.

I misunderstood.

Germans Love David Hasselhoff would be it then.

I thought that another trope would fit better.

@Proof: There was plenty posted in this reddit post, however it's all in Chinese and even native speakers within the thread were baffled with the gaming slang being used (there were also some comments that supported OP's post). Didn't mention it in the example because I'm not sure if it counts as drama importation but there was even video (video just shows the posts and censored video, it is not the original animal torture vid thank god) of someone claiming to have murdered a cat because it looked like "Scarameow" (an in-game depiction of Scaramouche as a cat). The poor reddit poster was immediately doxed and harassed following this post too.

I... have some reservations about adding this then. If we added it we could get dragged into the drama and get doxxed too.

[up][up]Thanks so much about providing the context.

It does not belong in TV Tropes at all then.

We are not here to import drama from elsewhere and we don't want to be doxxed.

Kirby is awesome.

I mean... I feel like it's a bit much to assume that some random Chinese reddit users would dox any TV Tropes users over putting up a trope entry. Like, let's be a little realistic.

As for drama importation concerns, that's more of a thing to worry about, but I think that only applies to people bringing up off-wiki arguments here, not just us making a trope example about it.

Yeah. Sorry War Jay, got a bit too carried away. I agree the drama importation is way more of a concern then.

I don't intend to put down any of the drama within the thread in the example. Just the Chinese poll that showed Scaramouche was on 76% of responders' most hated characters list. The reddit content is just the proof that this vitriolic hatred for the character exists.

And yeah, I don't think any random poster would get doxxed over listing a trope example?

Sorry I just saw these people were willing to kill a poor cat and didnt want to risk it. Add it if you want, its an example and your sources are legit and non drama importing.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon lists both Germans Love David Hasselhoff and Americans Hate Tingle, both refer to America loving the movie but china disliking it

from what i can find, the movie was a coproduction involving companies from the US, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan

So what should we consider it? Does either trope apply?

I remember that the film was already unpopular in China even before it came out because of its Taiwanese and American influences, plus the named stars were almost all not native Mandarin speakers. There was also some kind of behind-the-scenes fight between two film companies that resulted in some kind of screw-up where it was released to cinemas, then pulled and then released again. So, even when the film first came out, people just didn't bother turning up to watch it. Those that did were critical of the quality of spoken Mandarin and the fights weren't done in the typical fashion of Chinese martial arts films, so was criticised for being too slow and too low quality (most of the actors were not experienced martial artists) compared to the films they were used to seeing that contained similar themes.

I think the most appropriate one to keep for the work itself is Germans Love David Hasselhoff.

If Americans Hate Tingle applies at all, it will apply to Zhang Ziyi. Zhang Ziyi was panned for her role, her accent, her lack of martial arts ability. Everything, basically.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

The YMMV page just uses "The west" which is is a very nice compromise.

[up][up] so it would be considered a chinese film then?

Calling a Taiwanese film "Chinese" seems very close to Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment violating.

Ok, so its taiwanese? The main reason I came to the thread is because I couldn't figure out how to classify the film

From what I can gather, the movie was made by film companies from the USA, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. So it was a multinational project that in my opinion fits nether Germans Love David Hasselhoff or Americans Hate Tingle

Beware, I live!

Hm. That's a good point about how multinational it was. It may be that the specific complaints about the film fall under more specific reactions (there are accent-specific options, for example). So, it might well be worth not using either of them.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Just to reply to #26, Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go is a Canadian-US co production of a British Franchise. Which makes it's case... hard to define really under these tropes. I definitely think it being hated by fans of the previous entries needs mentioning somewhere though.

I mean since the series has negative reception in all 3 of those countries it doesn't matter, it's not "Americans Hate Tingle" its "Everybody Hates Tingle"

Yeah, I am trying to figure out where it best fits. Under They Changed It, So It Sucks maybe? I definitely think adding to that to explicitly mention how it doesn't follow its roots might be valid.
