This is more of a question for Writer's Block.
Award-winning screenwriter. Directed some movies. Trying to earn a Creator page. I do feedback here.Aye, moved this thread to that forum.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHow could you forgot the nagging stay-at-home mom? Or the eccentric neighbor/friend who acts as a foil for the dad?
Anyways, I guess my big question for something like this would be in the tone. Is it meant to take the basic premise and turn it into a bleak and grounded drama or is it meant to be more of a dark comedy exploiting the absurdity of the genre? Like what kind of point is being made with this story?
I’m kinda going for it being set up as a raunchy adult comedy… but then WHAM! it isn’t funny. We even follow the “antics” of the Dad and other characters as well.
This concept has actually been done before, famously and to much acclaim at that - Bojack Horseman. It even pretends to be a conventional "Simpsons Guy" show for a few episodes to lull the viewer into a false sense of security, just as you suggested. F is for Family is apparently similar, but takes aim directly at the "Simpsons Guy" family dynamic where Bojack mostly approached the more general features of the genre.
be nice to benjamin it's not his fault he got beat up by a microbe
I don’t think this concept’s been done before: deconstructing a FAMILY GUY/SIMPSONS-style adult animated sit-com. I can easily see a few possibilities.
• A simpleminded father, who seems to be your garden variety Stupid TV Dad… but is also abusive toward his wife and kids. Bonus points for having an 80’s fetish.
• A socially awkward Chris Griffin-style teenage son who is secretly a pervert. We’re not talking the funny Master Roshi variety here; we’re talking a boy who spies on the girl who lives across the street when she used the bathroom or undresses.
• A pet or a young child (if you wish to take the Maggie route) with the voice of a middle-aged man (you don’t just see this kind of stuff with characters like Brian and Stewie, but also with the titular ALLEN GREGORY and that bear cub on BRICKLEBERRY). This character pretty much serves as the creator’s bullhorn for his left wing politics. If the universe doesn’t bend to his whims by the end of the episode… NUCLEAR ANNIHILATION.
• The abuse from the dad doesn’t just get dropped because a non sequitur has ended. The scars and trauma remain… and it’s not played for laughs.
What else…?
