Ambiguous Name: Anything That Moves

To-do list:

    Original post
Note: This thread was proposed by nw09.

Anything That Moves is supposed to be for characters who have very broad sexual standards; they'll sleep with anyone, male or female, but not to the extent of literally "anything that moves". Unsurprisingly, tropers fail to understand that the title is hyperbole, and misuse it for Extreme Omnisexual. Other times it's used as a synonym for Really Gets Around when the character is heterosexual. According to the wick check of 51 examples, 24 (about half) take the title literally, only 7 are correct, and 20 are other misuse. Propose a rename.

Wick check:

51/51

    Misuse (Extreme Omnisexual) (24)

     Misuse (just bisexual) (2)

     Correct use (8)

    Misuse (seemingly heterosexual) (7)

    ZCE / Other misuse / Unsure (11)

Oddly enough, she doesn't actually wear makeup offstage except for media appearances, but she spends enough time on hair care to make up for it.

Can a character be Anything That Moves but not Really Gets Around if they have plans to settle down with a monogamous partner but have aren't picky about who they are?

[up]Yes and no. By the current trope's definition, yes. But see this earlier discussion on the trope being used for legit sexual identities i.e. pan/bisexual characters, which I don't think it's supposed to be.

Snicka's point about immorality/low standards is also relevant. You can have a version where it doesn't overlap with Really Gets Around (despite what that page says), so long as the immorality aspect is kept. This would be something like a nerdy/loser character whose lack of sexual experience because of their social awkwardness/uncoolness has turned them into a desperate horndog who'd try to f*ck a pie just to experience something even close to sex just once. (incidentally, this just reminded me of a great example for the Nerds Are Pervs draft I adopted.) These characters don't have a broad sexual preference per se and would actually love to just find a person to settle down with so they have a permanent sexual partner, in most cases. But they are so desperate and horny they just stop "being picky" for the sake of getting their nut. In American Pie for example, the character is straight and ends up in a monogamous relationship turned marriage in the sequels.

The way I see it, the trope is supposed to have a criticalness/condemnation of this kind of behavior. Still doesn't make it distinct enough from Extreme Omnisexual though, since that covers all kinds of portrayals of "willing to bed anything and anyone".

Hooked a crowner since I think we've already decided what our options are.

I think we should rename it into something like Sex With Anything That Moves.

I think Anything That Moves only works when you know what the page is about. It needs some extra logic to get that it's Sexually Attracted To/ Loves Anything That Moves.

Extreme Omnisexual is pretty clear to me.

It's a preexisting term, but that's also a reason I'm voting against it.

We need to delay the call for a bit as none of the options have enough consensus.

I'll bump the ATT bulletin to see if we can bring more attention to the crowner.

Edit: Not completely awake, so this wasn't supposed to be posted with the mod hat on. Turned that off.

It's not quite the 15th yet (but it's only three hours until then where I live, so it's not a big deal), but since Extreme Omnisexual is the only option with consensus and its consensus isn't close enough to 2:1 that a single vote could take away its consensus, we're merging Anything That Moves and Extreme Omnisexual under the name Extreme Omnisexual.

I don't have a strong opinion on whether to disambiguate Anything That Moves or redirect it to Extreme Omnisexual; we can probably sandbox Anything That Moves's on-page examples to keep track of what needs to be moved to Extreme Omnisexual.

Okay, so clarify something for me, what's the new distinction between the tropes we split Anything That Moves between? The impression I'm getting is something like this:

Is that a good summary? Quantity of sexual partners versus bizarreness?

I think it's good to say in the OP to-do list to just remove entries that say "character is pansexual/omnisexual and that's it". After all, just because a character is omnisexual doesn't make them an Extreme Omnisexual.

That's the standard "cut ZCE during cleanup phase", so I don't believe that has to be said.

Crown Description:

The previous crowner has decided to merge Extreme Omnisexual and Anything That Moves. What should the new name be? As stated on the aforementioned crowner, both EO and ATM will be crowner options in this Alt titles crowner.
