Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here
Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.
Here is how the process works:
- If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.
- After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".
- Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!
Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:
- To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!
- No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
- Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
- Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
- Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.
- Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").
- If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.
- If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!
- Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.
- Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.
- If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
- For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
- If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.
- Please keep all discussions "in-house".
- What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
- Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
- Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.
If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:
What is the work?
This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.
Who is the candidate and what have they done?
This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.
How are they Magnificent?
This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.
How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?
What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.
This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.
Final verdict?
This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

Got a candidate I'm not fully sure on but I feel like they're worth the proposal anyways.
Falconshield is a music channel who makes music based on games, many songs of which are based on League of Legends.
My candidate today is from Pick Your Poison, which is about the Chem-Baroness, Renata Glasc.

Is she magnificent?
Yeah. The song describes how Renata has earned the loyalty of the POV character by saving them and having a great hold over them as a result, as well as describing how good of a manipulator she is, such as how she's able to hurt the competition to Glasc Industries and get more power by appealing to powerful people with her alchemy.
Is she a bastard?
Also yeah. Renata describes how the POV character should stay loyal to her lest they die, not to mention lines about how she, through her actions and manipulations hurts the competition and "puts them all in the dirt".
Verdict?
Keeper, imo.

Who is Husk? what has he done?
With Alastor dying decades before story began, Husk never lost his status as Overlord and continued running his fancy Catnap Casino. Master gambler who nonetheless is hinted to have no problem cheating with his powers, Husk swindles demons of money, notably winning all souls under Valentino’s control.
He puts them to work under him to swindle people using their charm, treating them nicely and even entering bussines and romantic partherchip with Angel Dust, one getting money while other actually knows how to be responsible with it. At one point he also hired Moxxie and Millie as his bodyguards after events of “Spring Broken” resulated in Stolas being killed by Exorcists and them losing jobs.
Introduced when Rosie bring Charlie in search of help with Hazbin Hotel, Husk wins another game, having demon who accused him of cheating (with Husk’s neither confroming or deniying it) gunned down. Meeting Charlie, little push from Angel make him give funding hotel a shot. Bringing his employes (including Niffty) to help Rosie’s cannibals in getting hotel in shape, Husk joins Rosie in plan to make Charlie leader Hell needs to rise agains the Exorcists.
He plays more firm hand in mentoring Charlie in contrast to Rosie, at one point throwing hotel’s staff and it’s only guest Mrs Mayberry into turn war to have them bond after latter, dosen’t turn out to be fond of cannibals. It is suprisingly effective. And when Valentino’s goons attack the hotel, uses his Overlord powers combined with teamwork with Rosie to massacre them. After he and Rosie are thrown out, he alongside Rosie decide to make it right while suporting Charlie in leading army to stand agains the Exorcists.
Husk principates in battle to defend the hotel, using power card tiped with angelic steel and his powers. During battle however, Angel Dust Sacrificers himself, Husk rippping out hisnsouls contract so he can die free before two lovers kiss as Angel dies in Husk’s arms. After battle Husk joins in rebuilding the hotel while he and Cherry grieve Angel together, unaware he ascended to Heaven.
Is he magnificent?
Husk as Overlord, you better believe he is. While he does mostly come as support to Rosie when it comes to their part of plan to save Hell, he is still shown to have succesful career as Overlord of gambling, able to swindle almost everybody while being baddas figther whose plan actually helps breaks the ice between staff and Mayberry.
Personality wise he can be sarcastic and dry, but generally it never goes beyond clasical Jerk with a Heart of Gold who gets lost of moments to show he cares and can be pretty suave and charming.
Is he bastard?
For sure, he is Overlord of Hell who runs industry on swindling people of money and if his introduction is to be belived, has no problem cheating, also having no problem with his bodyguards gunning down his enemies and when throwing staff and Mayberry in turn wars, cassualy reveals he principates in every single one to expand his teritory.
But despite his gruchy demeanor, he is overall pretty cool boss from what we see (light years better than Valentino, as little as it says) who is geniunelly in love with Angel and wants to save Hell and maybe even make it a better place along the way.
Conclusion?
Yes.
And for those curious about other potentials.
- Vaggie herself is of course baddas leader of the Exorcists who is far more methodical and ruthless than sadistic Manchild Adam, plus takes her duty to protect Heaven seriously and is geniune benevolent boss geniunelly in love with her second in command Lute (in contrast to Adam who loses his geniune friendship with her canon one had, instead being selfish dick who only values her for her sex appeal). But she gets more fanatical and her bigotry against demons kinda veers from being justified fear to being inproperly parainoid Never My Fault attitude about pushing them, ending story utterly determined to exterminate Hell completely. She has potential, but way to early to make call.
- Same with Carmilla, who is brialiant mastermind with lot of mitigating factors, but is at the moment to much of emotional wreck, with fics version of the “Finale” showing that she only got more obsesed with having her (justified mind you) vengence on Vaggie, even to point of possible Sanity Slippage. Plus there is fact that like canon Alastor she is on somebody elses leash. She is pretty much where canon Alastor is at the moment with there being lot to be revelated, but stronger issues to work through and more set in stone mitigating factors, wait and see.
- Valevette and Zestial, Velvette also plays important role in Carmilla’s plan and gets much more sympathetic traits than is series, but she has some bandage that is kinda dosen’t exactly make me confortable with proposing her, while Zestial is mostly there to befriend her and be Shipper on Deck for Carmilla and Rosie, with us not seeing how exactly he opeates as Overlord. But they end story joining with Ser Pentious in V Os and are clearly set to play role Vees are set to play in canon season 2. Once again, they have promise (especally my boy Zestial), but way to early.
- One I am most conflicted about is Alastor, suprisnigly enough. While he only shows up during flashback in one chapter, it is he who inspired Vaggie to take Adam’s place, battle they had all but stated to be in order she would awaken power needed to overthrow him, while pushing her buttons needed for her to come to the conclusion. While he does get killed as he prepares to escape, he takes it in stride and indirectly congradulates her. My one worry is that there is clearly more to be revelated about him, with Carmilla having his powers, him knowing more about angels that any other Sinner and only justification being “having his ways”, plus why would he (or more likely his and Carmilla’s boss) want her to overthrow Adam in first place.

Having just watched Star Wars: Rebels all the way through for the first time, bit of an interesting question: could Hera Syndulla be an MB contender? Specifically, is she sufficiently over the "bastard" line? She's surprisingly ruthless when she wants to be - in particular, the episode where she rather horrifically electrocutes a bunch of cyborg Imperial spies through their cybernetics, on screen no less, is probably the downright coldest thing I've ever seen a protagonist in a quote-unquote kids' show do. But she's a straight-up good guy more often than not, and the Empire is, well, the Empire, so I'm not sure.

I think Hera sounds like she might be bad enough but you might want to ask someone more familiar with the show first. We've had cases where a character is The Chess Master and has the required dignity and coolness but isn't enough of a bastard (particularly characters who don't kill and/or mainly target Asshole Victim like Jotaro or Joker).

I mean, Mace Windu did awful things too but was unambiguously a good guy given the man apologizes to Anakin after his redemption from Vader.
One candidate I never even considered until now and probably don't think he fits the bastard bill is Yoda himself. He's got a lot in common with Albus Dumbledore and has been manipulating Anakin, Obi Wan and to some extent the Jedi Council.

I don't think Hera squeezes past and Yoda absolutely isn't this; not only are the arguments that he's bad enough pretty hard to buy into but his inability to handle Anakin and see his increasingly obvious betrayal coming directly lead to the eventual destruction of the Jedi and Palpatine's rise to power.
No, I don't think Hera has done anything particularly noticeable that would make people go "She's done terrible things to win the war".
I recall that she had to talk her father Cham out of destroying an Imperial Carrier because it would be more useful to the Rebel Alliance as a vehicle for them. And Cham is far more willing to do the dirty work than Hera.

What's the work?
Iron Man: Armored Adventures was a very fun animated show about a teenage Tony Stark and his misadventures becoming a superhero. Of special note is his rivalry with classmate Gene Khan, who seeks to find the powerful Ten Makluan Rings of the Mandarin and rule the world.
We already have one up from this series, the Ghost, and I talked about the Mandarin a bit ago. But before I get to the latter, I wanted to look at one of the minor villains of the show.
Who is Doctor Doom?
Tyrant of Latveria, who ascended to the throne after a disastrous interdimensional experiment scarred his face and saw the souls of his entire family stolen by a demon (not Mephisto, but Imma call him that anyway). Doom is one of the most brilliant and evil men alive, a genius who made his own powered armor years before Stark and has been singlehandidly turning his small, developing country into a global superpower.
By the time of season 2, Tony's Iron Man armor designs have been stolen by two major corporate villains, Obadiah Stane and Justin Hammer. Tony put up a virus to destroy the designs if they get uploaded online, ensuring the leak is contained to just New York... which brings Doom to the city to see the designs himself. Specifically, Stane has invited him over, sycophantically offering his copy of the designs in exchange for Doom helping improve the power core for his Iron Monger armor.
Doom, upon finally seeing the designs, confirms his suspicions that they're inferior in every way... except for the recharge time for its shields, as Doom's take a mere 1.7 seconds to recharge after taking a major hit. Doom takes this in his usual famously restrained fashion, plotting to steal the armor and remove his competition in the west—flawed, measly competition, but competition nonetheless. So, when Iron Man tries to spy on Stane's business—first by just hovering outside the range of the building's sensors, then by putting undetectable bugs on Stane himself—Doom immediately detects him and proceeds to thrash both him and War Machine without breaking a sweat, using "quantum manipulation"/basically magic to put Tony in a coma. It takes another of his friends remotely taking control of the Iron Man armor and surprising Doom to put him on the backfoot, and they escape after dropping a building on the despot—a mild inconvenience, all in all.
Seeing how they're not surrendering, Doom decides to cut his losses, sabotaging the Iron Monger armor to become a massive bomb. The range is a little unclear—they mostly focus on how it will take out the whole city, but Tony at one point exclaims it will destroy the entire Eastern Seaboard (I think they're just saying that as shorthand for taking out a chunk of the state)—but whatever the case, it will destroy Stane, Hammer, and Iron Man, leaving Doom's competition obliterated. Tony, helpless to disable the bomb, desperately and just barely manages to contain the blast with forcefields, before once again confronting Doom. They get in a few good hits, but once more Doom is basically unstoppable... only for S.H.I.E.L.D. to break up the fight and escort Doom back home, as the lack of evidence for the bomb plot means Doom's diplomatic immunity is intact.
Returning several episodes later, Doom confronts Gene and Howard Stark—whom Gene has kidnapped to help him in the hunt for the Ten Rings—and reveals he has already conquered the trial of the ninth ring. Theoretically, only descendants of the Mandarin can wield the rings' power, but Doom figured out how to bypass this restriction and captures Howard, Gene just barely escaping to recruit Tony's help. They teleport to the entrance of Doom's castle—Doom is able to mess with Gene's teleportation ring to prevent something more accurate—and navigate death traps, as well as a Doombot wielding a fake ring that, again, nearly defeats them. They deduce the hidden location of Doom's secret science lab...
And are immediately captured, because of course it was a trap. With the power of the ninth ring, Doom perfects his portal technology (inadvertently creating more portals that rain down destruction all across the globe) and contacts not!Mephisto, offering up the pure souls of Tony, Howard, and Gene in exchange for his family. Unfortunately, he mistakenly assumes Gene is a hero like the first Mandarin, and the demon reneges on the deal. Doom swears to personally wage war on its entire dimension... and gets an opportunity to do so when the three teleport out of the demon realm by using the other eight rings (previously hidden from Doom's notice by Iron Man's shielding).
He proceeds to fight them to take the remaining rings for his war, again remaining pretty much unstoppable. However, while all that's going on to distract him, Howard messes with some of his tech to zap him, giving Gene the opportunity to steal the ninth ring, activate the portal, and send his soul to not!Mephisto to be eaten.
Is he magnificent?
What else would we expect? Doom’s a badass who runs rings (get it?) around everyone else, with armor so advanced he doesn’t even flinch in response to massive explosions.
He is still Doom of course, he’s an egotistical ass who is partially motivated by slighted pride over Iron Man doing something better than him. But that only comes out when he calls Tony an “insolent worm” for pointing it out, then changing tactics from just trying to convince him to surrender by threatening Rhodey's life to summoning a demon to suck out Tony's soul. Otherwise his goals remain pragmatic, if done with a little overkill.
Is he a bastard?
Tries to nuke a city in his debut, while constantly promising Tony a mercifully "painful, but swift" death if he surrenders. Definitely bad enough, but more emphasis is ultimately placed on how much of a terrifyingly competent mastermind he is than the monstrosity of the act, so imo I don’t think he’s presented as too bad to count.

What If…..Vaggie Remained a Exorcist?
is Hellaverse AU fanfic written by The_TheGeneral. Planned to be first in series of What If? fics, it takes place in universe where Vaggie became new leader of the Exorcists after seemingly killing Adam, becoming even more ruthless than him. Charlie who never had suportive girlfriend tries to to run her Hotel to prove redemption of Sinners is possible and stop the Extremination, gaining steam as she runs into familiar faces from canon (including some from Helluva Boss).
Author intends to eventually revisit the universe once second season of the show is out, however there are two I feel are good to be proposed now. First, lets talk about character who partly takes Alastor’s place (since Alastor is double dead here).

Overlord of the Cannibal Town, Rosie is friendly woman who whose influece is massive, having monopoly on bodies of demons killed in Extreminations to be used as food. Dedicated to protecting her people, Rosie has topled other Overlords if she feelt it was necessary to keep them safe during exterminations. She also has monopoly on Hell’s radio.
Meeting Charlie after her failed meeting with Vaggie to present her idea and next extremination is moved up in six months, Rosie offers her help, geniunelly touched by her belief Sinners can become better people even if she dosen’t believe them ascending to Heaven is possible. She leads Charlie into recruiting Husk (here still Overlord) to join and help with providing employes to get run down hotel into shape.
When Carmilla Carmine, who in this universe dissapeared for seven years after her daugthers were killed when she killed an Exorcist, returns with powers Alastor had and presents plan to bring Vaggie down to remaining Overlords, Rosie suggests that they get Charlie on their side by waiting for Heaven to push her into taking arms, her and Husk builing her into leader while speeding things up.
Rosie continues to support emotionally distraught Charlie, relatively quickly starting to feel guilty for stringing her along despite continuing while reigniting romantic relathioship she and Carmilla has before latter’s dissaperance. She continues to help in ploting for offensive against the Exorcists, while serving as emotional support to Carmilla who, isn’t in best place mentally.
When Charlie calls Lucifer in order to get meeting with hidger ups of Heaven to present her idea, Rosie takes Alastor’s spot of playing up her relathioship with Charlie in order to push Lucifer to actually act like father. That is until Valentino’s goons (who is no longer Overlord and has been stealing angelic steel necesary to kill angels for his own plan) attack searching for Cherri, Blitzo and Hatchet from Zoophobia, who helped Overlords in taking steel back. Rosie and Husk beat goons, Rosie revealing her umbrella is created from angelicnsteel as two take particular enjoyment in massacring goons.
After Charlie’s meeting with Heaven ends with her learning about plan of the Overlords, falsely believing that they plan to invade Heaven, she sends Rosie and Husk packing, temporalily breaking Rosie. She however decides to make up with Charlie, revealing truth to her, taking her to Carmilla and suporting her in leading army of Sinners and Hellborn Overlords gathered into saving Hell. All while helping Charlie deal with her here romantic feeling for Seraphim Emily and joining in rebuilding the hotel bigger and better after it was destroyed in battle.
Is she magnificent?
She is powerfull, respected, baddas and friendly Overlord, great emotional support for both Charlie and Carmilla and one of key players in organising resistance against the Exorcists and getting Happy Hotel of the ground.
She does get somehow more petty and bickering when meeting Lucifer, but it pretty much immediatelly becomes mask to get him to step up as father. She also gets kinda depresije when Charlie learns the truth and kicks her and Husk out, only to recover, make up with Charlie and help save Hell.
Is she bastard?
She is Charlie’s kind parental substitute who pushes Lucider into reconecring with her and feels quilty about using her to save hell.
She is so nice that one could forget she is still dreaded Overlord of Hell who leads the society cannibals and is pretty happy to brutally dispatch of Valentino’s enforcers as much to went her frustrations as to protect the Hotel. Yes she is bastard for sure, but one with loot of good gualities with canibalism she and her people practice being given more than enough levity to not be too bad.
