Old Complete Monster cleanup thread

Welcome to the Complete Monster proposal thread! This is the thread where new Complete Monster examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential redeeming qualities will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the CM subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite CM" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for CM equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, the crimes they commit, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some villains, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

Any redeeming qualities? Freudian Excuse?

This is where any potential redeeming characteristics or tragic backstory should be discussed. Do they have a tragic past? Do they show that Even Evil Has Standards or Even Evil Has Loved Ones? Maybe a Pet the Dog moment or two? This is where these should be discussed in full. Not every potential redeeming moment is a clear-cut disqualifier, but we should hear of any potential issues to ensure the character is discussed in full.

Are they bad enough?

A Complete Monster has to be particularly vile by the standard of the work they appear in. Therefore, you should look at what the character does compared to similar characters in the same work. This takes into account things like:

  • Their resource level (a human Serial Killer can't stand up to an alien Omnicidal Maniac, but they can be bad by the standard of other human serial killers)
  • The amount of time they have to work with (such as a one-shot character versus long-running antagonists)
  • The quantity vs. quality of their crimes compared to others (someone with a lower victim count but far more visceral and personal crimes could be considered as equally bad overall as someone with a higher body count but less horror involved)

Essentially, this section is an analysis of the kinds of villainy shown in the work and an explanation of why this particular character's villainy stands out within it.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This thread tackles very serious and dark matters on a daily basis. We will be discussing things like murder, rape, torture, human trafficking, crimes against children, and in particularly dark cases, several of these issues at the same time. We keep a lighthearted air, but all candidates carry the general assumption that these are awful individuals committing disgusting crimes. We ask that if you participate, you do so with the requisite seriousness such dark topics require; exclamations of how gross something is, whether serious or sarcastic, are disrespectful to the topics at hand, and if you cannot handle such topics, please do not participate.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

I feel like my Stellar Blade discussion post is accidentally getting ignored. There are 2 characters from that post that I needed further opinions on, including those who played the games, but so far nobody has made any response to the post. I'm not gonna rush anybody, but I would appreciate it if people at least give their opinions on the characters discussed in the post. I'm so sorry this took so long! I got very distracted with other things...

  • Warcraft: Yogg-Saron is the Old God of Death, and he proves himself to be every bit as vile as his rival N'Zoth. Forming the Black Empire with the other Old Gods, Yogg-Saron would last longer than his rivals and had his C'thraxxi minions slaughter many Titanforged before he was finally locked away in the prison city of Ulduar. While imprisoned, Yogg-Saron would take advantage of Keeper Loken having an affair with Keeper Thorim's wife Sif, Yogg-Saron tricked him into killing Sif, and got him to start a war between Thorim and his Frost Giant allies while Yogg-Saron corrupted the Forge of Wills with the Curse of Flesh to make Titanforged easier to corrupt while also tainting the world tree Vordrassil and creating the Emerald Nightmare, all the while enslaving his jailers and getting Loken to manipulate himself into the position of Prime Designate, assuring that the death of Yogg-Saron's foremost pawn would usher in the death of all life on Azeroth.

Alright....One I have been looking forward to for a while now

Thanks for feedback from Ravok!

What's the work?

The 'Home' series, starting with Can't Go Home Again, then continuing with 2 sequels; Almost feels like Home and Going Home in a box, is a phenomenal FNAF fanfiction series. It reimagines a lot of the lore into an interesting story with an unorthodox but, IMO, beautifully written take on the franchise.

Things all started with Mike Schmidt, the security guard from Freddy's before it shut down, having inherited the house of his old employer 'Frederick Fazzman'. With it, he discovered some secrets…the most immediate, being the Marionette living in Frederick’s home, apparently being possessed by the ghost of Frederick’s son. Mike becomes Allies with Sam Fritz / Fritz Smith. And Jeremy Fitzgerald, with the ‘phone guy’ Scott Caldwell also later joining the cast. They would open a new restaurant based around Foxy.

Many more things happen and more and more secrets from the past are discovered ...including, the truth about Frederick’s identity.

    Who is William Afton?

Sense the timeline is a bit complex, not all of these happen in order, FYI. This was just the easiest way to write things down.

The Co-Founder of Fazbear Entertainment, and the feared ‘purple man’ behind the murders at Freddy Fazbear’s.

William’s home life is a bit vague, we do get some explanations from Word of God, he had a relatively normal childhood before leaving home. He would, at some point, start a family with a woman named Marion, and start a business with Henry….

William was a very charismatic, and friendly individual, all hiding the fact that he was an ice-cold sociopath. At one point he kidnapped Henry’s son Sammy, who was never seen from again.

Later on, Henry ended up dying from a springlock accident. William had nothing to do with it…but, Henry's death and possesion of the animatronic he wore, 'Fredbear' did inspire some of his crimes.

Now, remember that family I mentioned? His oldest was Michael, then he had Gabriel, and a daughter named Elizabeth. Finally, he had one last son, with his wife dying in childbirth. William named this last child after Marion.

He was emotionally abusive to Michael, eventually driving him away. He supposedly treated Elizabeth as a ‘princess’ but was physically abusive to her at times. He would allow Gabriel to bully Marion jr(Who I will just refer to as Marion for the rest of the post, for simplicity’s sake).

William would build the “funtime” line of animatronics. Machines designed to capture and kill kids, the funtime ‘Circus baby’ ended up killing Elizabeth, resulting in her possessing it. He left the funtimes, despite one of them being possessed by his daughter, in an ARI facility where they were regularly tortured with electric shocks. The funtimes would also end up being possessed by some of his victims, and they were still tortured.

Eventually, Gabriel's bullying of his brother got a bit extreme, one day accidentally killing Marion by shoving him in the mouth of the animatronic Fredbear. Marion would go on to possess the animatronic ‘the puppet’/’The Marionette’.

William ends up kidnapping Gabriel and his friends, performing some horrid experiments on them…in particular, one where they would be in a bedroom, forced to fend off the ‘’nightmare animatronics' night after night on repeat. William finally ended up killing them, before bringing them back to Freddy’s and hiding them there, Marion would find them and would help their souls find new life in the classic set of animatronics. With Gabriel haunting the animatronic Foxy.

They were not the last ones William would kill, oh nooo. William would kill many, many more kids. Some through his bare hands, others through the funtime service. Many of his victims ended up possessing animatronics.

He manipulated Michael into going to the ARI facility, saying he could help his lost sister. Mike initially rejected the offer but accepted it once he started looking for his friend Ben(Who got killed by the funtimes but would later possess a mess of wires), this resulted in Michael getting scooped out and worn as a skinsuit by the funtimes.

Now, eventually, he ended up forming a new identity for himself to avoid his troubled reputation and the many rumors that followed him. 'Frederick Fazzman'. He took Marion home, and continued to run Freddy's. He was known as a good guy and boss….still covering up the shadier stuff at Freddy's, keeping employees from calling the right people when someone had an injury and the like.

At some point, hired Mike Schmidt(Not the same as Michael Afton, here), a young runaway. Mike worked as a security guard at the new Freddy's, with ‘Frederick’ being a bit of a father figure to the boy. Now, he eventually suffered a heart attack. He left Mike his home in his will, and another employee his car and warehouse. This leads to the full main story, where the characters initially believe Frederick to have been a good, if flawed man ...and then finding out the truth near the end, with at least our main characters finally discovering what a monster he truly was, and trying to move on.

And, in a shocking twist, that wasn't the end for good old Willie! In the sequel, it's revealed that he built a computer tower, a ‘tether’ for himself in the basement. Once he died, his soul was tied to his tether and he was kept in a spiritual sub-dimension between life and death. There, he would take on a new identity, the Gator spirit ‘Old Man Consequences'. In this new form, he resided near a ‘lake’ in the spirit plaine with supernatural abilities. He was able to influence or gain control of people through his computers’ connection to the phone line system in the town.

As OMC, he would take control of a former employee of his, ‘Dave Miller', he would have Dave kidnap several children and stash them at the Magictime theater, where Dave was employed. At one point, Charlie, the now teenage daughter of his old friend Henry? Tried to stop him and rescue a girl he kidnapped. The possessed Dave would kill Charlie by running her over(Marion is able to save Charlie by binding her soul with the ‘security puppet’, an animatronic similar to the marionette). Mike gets into a fight with Dave, defeating him and then freeing the kids. William killed Dave as he was an unstable host.

William then took control of the owner of the El Chip' restaurant, Glenn. He had Glenn trap Fritz Smith in a room with dangerous animatronics; Fritz thankfully got out unharmed.

William then took control of the detective, Clay Burke. Clay was suspicious of Foxy's, so William corrupted him into an insane Inspector Javert obsessed with the missing children's incident.

Now…during this, he also appeared to Mike in his dreams, using his Old Man Consequence's form. He would gain Mike's trust by assisting in certain situations.

He would make Clay do a number of crazy things, such as releasing a series of dangerous robots Will created called the ‘twisted ones’. Having him make a creepy shrine to the dead children and luring the protagonists down there, leading to a dangerous confrontation where Clay intimidated them with a gun. The protagonists are able to piece together that something was controlling Clay. The protags still have to fend off the wicked twisted ones.

William also infected Jeremy Fitzgerald, trying to corrupt him into a killer. And he would also infect Scott Caldwell, nearly killing him.

Now…at another point, William infects Charlie, pulling her mind into the spirit world. It would then infect Marion to do the same. Mike would find Marion in this state, before he was able to close his eyes and follow the 2 to the spirit plaine. They go to confront OMC, he is initially amicable before they start to question him, accusing him of being the one behind all this. OMC confesses to all of it. But explains himself a bit more…what he did with Dave, Glenn and Clay was not to ruin Foxy’s, it was to protect it. By having Dave kidnap several children at Magictime Theater, he ruined their reputation and got rid of competition for Foxy’s. By having Glenn nearly kill Fritz, he ruined Chipper's reputation as well. And his actions with Clay? Once the world saw what Clay had done, they would see a crazy man who couldn't let go of the past, who would be dropped from his position at the police. The murders at Freddy's would no longer be looked into and Foxy's would not have to deal with those old controversies.

Why did he do all this? Because he was..proud of Mike.

"I never thought you would make so much progress. Opening a new establishment, gathering my creations, taming them, keeping my work alive even once I was gone. My greatest accomplishment- he looks at me with such fear and still I cannot feel anything but joy in what he has become. All because of you." Old Man Consequences' voice lowered like he was becoming emotional. "You have exceeded all of my expectations for any employee."

That is when he finally unveils that he is William. After shocking the heroes with that revelation? He says he wants payment for all the help he has given Foxy’s. He wanted Charlie. He wanted to keep her soul with him forever, this made them furious. They refuse his offer, and he responds by chasing them through the spirit plain.

William also spiritually reached out to his daughter, Elizabeth(Who, as Baby, had joined the protagonists in the second story). He attempted to manipulate her into destroying Charlie’s physical, unconscious animatronic body. She was able to resist him, he coldly disowned Baby in response. Remarking "You are nothing to me. My daughter is dead."

Back to the mains, Mike is able to wake himself up and looks through the house for whatever William must be using to tether himself to reality. William continues to confront Marion and Charlie, they end up back at the lake. William continues trying to manipulate Marion into giving him Charlie, even threatening Mike. Marion blew up at William, asking how William could do any of this. He angrily tells William how he loved him once, how he was William’s son. Will, just coldly asked ‘are you sure?’. This finally pushed Marion over the edge, he pushed William into the burning, fiery water of the soul lake. The 2 struggled…And then, Mike is able to find the computer William attached his soul to, he destroyed it with a bat. Without anything tethering him to reality, William descended down the lake, being dragged away by multiple hands into the abyss.

    Is he bad enough?

The series has some other nasties to it. Henry gets hit with some huuuuge Adaptational Villainy, in this version he is Golden Freddy. He began a crusade that killed several nightguards, and later manipulates his own father into trying to pull a mass-murder suicide by planting the idea to lure several animatronics into a trap pizzeria, then subsequently burn them all. The newly revived Fazbear Entertainment in ‘Going home in a box’ has been secretly killing technicians. Baby and the funtimes brutally scooped out some people to find someone they could wear as a fleshsuit…

William outdoes all of em without even really trying. William murdered dozens of children, he is a dreadful father who put his son Gabriel through nightmarish experiments and eventually personally murdered him. He put the funtimes, possessed by the souls of some of his victims, and one by his daughter, in an ARI facility where they were regularly tortured via electric shocks. After his death he was not much better, trying to destroy Clay Burke’s life by taking control and driving him insane. Using Dave to run Charlie over and killing Dave himself, later trying to keep Charlie’s soul to himself forever….

Point is, William demolishes the standard, whether it's through grandiose villainy or small personal cruelty.

    'Redeeming qualities?

William, as both himself and in his ‘Frederick’ persona, was a charismatic businessman who kept a good image and made quite a few connections. It's made clear basically every connection he ever had was manipulative at best and outright abusive at worst.

His relationship with his wife is left unexplored, with Word of God saying he just viewed her as useful. Back in Freddy’s prime, he formed a relationship with Scott Caldwell, who he infects and nearly kills in the sequel.

In regards to his kids? As Frederick, he took care of his son Marion at his home and Scott claims that in his own warped way William loved Marion. In the sequel William torments him with sadistic nightmares when chasing him and makes it clear he just views Marion as a special ‘accomplishment’ of his own. During the old days, He was emotionally abusive to Michael. And even his ‘princess’, Elizabeth? He disowns her for not following his orders at the end of the second book, with flashbacks in the third revealing he was physically abusive to her in life. I ain’t even explaining why Gabriel ain’t mitigating,

Strangely, the closest he comes to actually having a redeeming quality is Mike. He served as a father figure to a young Mike after Mike ran away from home, and was weirdly better to him then with his own children. It is revealed that most of his schemes in the second book were a weird way to ‘protect’ Mike’s establishment Foxy’s. From getting rid of the competition Foxy’s was facing and making Clay look like a madman so he would be unable to do anything to Foxy’s reputation. He admits at the end of the second story that he was proud of everything Mike had done and how he exceeded all expectations.

Nonetheless? I don’t think this is mitigating either. His gratitude to Mike is in large part thanks to Mike keeping his legacy alive, he is still fine using his ‘help’ as leverage to try forcing Mike to give him Charlie’s soul.. And in case there was any doubt, there was his threat at the end, making it clear any care William has for anyone is purely conditional.

"…Mike truly is blessed, is he not?" William's sudden change in topic was alarming, because Marionette could already tell what was coming. "He has everything he needs. A thriving business, steady income, youth, the trust of the town. So many good things… So much temptation." The man hummed low in his suit, like a wild beast barely resisting the urge to pounce. "I have been very good to Mike. I fitted his employee to spare him being my new acolyte… But I could have him just as easily."
Charlie realized that William was talking about Jeremy and looked to Marionette. It was clear that he knew exactly what William was implying, but he said nothing. He was just frozen there.
"I've grown tired of this empty pond. Either she stays with me, or I leave through Mike. Make your choice," William finished. He said it without any emotion, uncaring of the callousness of his threat. He just didn't care, Marionette realized. He didn't care about them, or Mike who he claimed did so much, or any of his children, or Henry, or Scott, or anyone at all. He just wanted and he took, and Marionette was furious.

Final verdict?

Long…long overdue keep. Happy to finally get to him!

William murdered dozens of kids, murdered his own son Gabriel. And also left the funtimes who were possesed by some of his victims, and in Baby's case his own daughter, to be tortured in an ARI facility,

As said in the effortpost, under the 'redeeming qualities' section, he threatens to bodyjack Mike, with Marion's narration vividly describing how he realized William did not truly care for anyone.

Here's my Unicron write-up

  • Unicron is a terrifying gargantuan Transformer who devours planets and any living creatures on them, having been responsible for the destruction of the planet Lithone, leaving an individual named Kranix as the sole survivor. Making a deal with the new Decepticon leader Starscream by sending him after the Matrix of Leadership and turning him into Megascream, Unicron later turns on the Decepticon by going after Cybertron and its moons.

Here's the belated Palpatine writeup.

  • What If Anakin Skywalker Started A Jedi Civil War (link): Palpatine, seeing that outcome of Anakin's uprising against the Jedi and his subsequent reforms to the Jedi Order threatens to end the Clone Wars and his bid for absolute power, seeks to sabotage peace negotiations between the Republic and the Separatists. Following a failed attempt by General Grievous to sabotage the peace negotiations, Palpatine would send Dooku to use his political influence within the Confederacy to subvert peace negotiations from within, while trying to stoke lingering resentments Anakin still has with the surviving Jedi that sided with Yoda during his uprising. When Anakin proves incorruptable, he tries to turn public opinion against both the Jedi and the peace negotiations. Forced to flee into hiding when all these plans fail, Palpatine prepares one final attempt to turn Anakin to the dark side by planning Padme's murder.
