My mom's been wanting to see the movie. Some point soon this week.
Hope she enjoys it.
The Owl House and Coyote Vs Acme are my Roman Empire. My mom sure enjoyed the movie.
In fact, I even learned that she used to go as far as making custom clothes for Barbie dolls when she was young.
But man, making a mother a major character in the movie was an absolutely amazing call, in my opinion. It brought so much emotional depth and food for thoughts.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Oh yeah. Gloria and what Barbie meant to her was a HUGE part of the movie. America Ferrera did great and she's probably about to get nominated for an Academy Award as well, so there you go.
Yeah, I like how it was set up as though it seemd like it's the daughter losing fondness for her toy, but it turns out it's the mom, which is still true - parents had toys too and also builds the idea of Barbie as a brand being old.
Is the "old lady is played by real life Barbie" still circulating?

Yeah. I figured pretty quickly that it was Gloria and not Sasha that was projecting her negativity onto Barbie. That didn't matter though because the execution still definitely worked.
Totally wouldn't be shocked if the young girl playing with the one that became Weird Barbie—to the tune of Spice Up Your Life haha—was Gloria. That seemed to be what was implied.
So I’m just gonna say that I did enjoy this movie. I had a good time watching it and part of me wants “I’m Just Ken” to win the best original song at the Oscars. If “Man or Muppet” can win, so can this.
I guess the big criticism I had was that at times I felt like I was being talked down to. Making me feel bad isn’t exactly a bad thing to do, I’m fact that can indicate that the story hits you well, but more in a “The film doesn’t respect your intelligence” sort of way. Call it a personal thing but I don’t like feeling lectured when I watch a movie. It takes me out of the film and just comes across as weak writing. There were also parts of the ending, especially as they relate to some morals that I found a bit questionable but I did enjoy the presentation of the film.
I really appreciate subtly and this film isn’t exactly subtle. Not a game ruiner because I admit it’s probably personal. I think the best thing the film had was visual flare.
I discover my own destiny as I command the winds of life!If you mean the speech, while it does kind of stop the movie, the fact that it's able to put into words so many things that women must feel is definitely admirable though.
While Man or Muppet is a great song, it also had the benefit of getting one of only two available slots that year. This movie's bound to get two slots—which is the maximum nowadays.
...Man or a Muppet won an award?!
…Yes. I remember it winning. Jason Segal was moved to tears.
The Owl House and Coyote Vs Acme are my Roman Empire. It's not even the best song in the movie smh
If that song can win, then dammit “I’m Just Ken” deserves a chance.
I discover my own destiny as I command the winds of life!Well I'm Just Ken along with Dance the Night and What Was I Made For? were all submitted. I'm Just Ken is probably getting one slot and I personally hope Dance the Night gets the other so that I can call Dua Lipa an Academy Award Nominee soon—same as I hope to also call Olivia Rodrigo that soon too. As great as I think both Billie Eilish and her song are, she and her brother already got nominated and won for another very deserving song recently and I want to see someone else get a chance right now too.
do you think they may try to do a Ken spin-off?
Not really. I think they might try to cash in another way but if you are asking if I think they will give Beach Ken his own movie, no I don't think so.
Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadI'd heard there was talk of doing a Ken movie, but any official announcement of either that or a Barbie sequel will likely come after the Academy Award nominations though.
The Ken movie where he meets and falls in love with Emma Stone Barbie.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Haha. They might just make that movie.
I don't know wouldn't doing a spinoff just to give ken a love interest just go against his arc in this film?
Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadOh you mean like making another movie just because Quasimodo Did Not Get the Girl in the first one? Haha. (Sarcasm Mode by the way)
I think as long as they do keep the focus more on Ken trying to live his life and be happy—and make a romantic interest not be the whole purpose of it, it would probably help things overall.

To be honest I’m not sure what’s wrong with Ken finally finding a healthy relationship. Finding a Barbie who actually likes him back for who he is. Would send a message that if you just be yourself and more specifically, the best version of yourself, that you will find happiness.
Sure that may be a tried and true trope but I dunno. Not all tropes are bad. Obviously it shouldn’t be glorifying Ken being a jerk. But it could be a nice way to show how he has grown from a guy who thinks he has to be an asshole to a guy who thinks he’s fine. Because he’s just Ken. And Ken is Kenough.
Sorry not sorry.
I discover my own destiny as I command the winds of life!Because it could unintentionally send the message that you can only be yourself if you are in your designated romance. My favorite thing about Ken's arc was getting out the "needs a romance to be happy" cliche. I should note my problem is not the idea of the romance but the idea of just hooking him up with another Barbie. If it was a human woman I would be more fine with it.

Fan-Preferred Couple cleanup threadYeah, the whole point of Ken's arc is understanding that he is not his girlfriend.
Immeaditely giving him a girlfriend and treating that as his happy ending would go against that.
Fair enough. But maybe YMMV. I wouldn’t mind a human love interest. Or no love interest at all. But what can I say, I guess I’m a sucker for certain tropes.
I like well done romances. Plus Tropes are Tools. It comes down to execution.

I discover my own destiny as I command the winds of life!
Heh, this is amusing:
Considering the theme of the movie, the way Barbie sitting on the chair is darkly appropriate.
