On televisions across multiple regions, a short commercial began airing a few months ago. A middle-aged gentleman in a brown suit, with a pair of pince-nez glasses, thinning light brown hair, and a goatee stepped into view. He held a Poke Ball in his gloved hand.

"Why hello there! My name is Professor Hawthorn. My expertise is in the relationship between humans and Pokemon. The Tuloh region is inhabited by many different types of Pokemon, of all different shapes and sizes. For many people, Pokemon are companions and friends. Others use them for battling." He tossed the Pokeball up into the air, and with a whoosh and a flash of light, a small, rotund raccoon-like Pokemon with a long tail and a white belly appeared. The Pokemon stood up on its tail and surveyed the environment, then hopped up and down for a bit.

"Sentret!" it chirped with a smile, before returning to its feet.

"But there are still many mysteries about Pokemon. I intend to discover the depths of the bond between humans and Pokemon. To this end, I am going to be sharing my collection of Pokemon from around the world with new trainers, hopefully helping them to start their very own Pokemon journey!" He held the Poke Ball out and pressed the button on its center, returning Sentret to the Poke Ball with a red flash. "Come meet me in Aleph Town, in Tuloh, at my laboratory! I look forward to meeting all of you soon!" The screen changed to show a map of the Tuloh region, with the little town of Aleph Town marked on the map with a circle. Then the commercial ended, returning to the various regularly-scheduled programming.

Aleph Town, outside the laboratory

Over the course of the next few months, trainers from within Tuloh and without had begun arriving in the sleepy village, and traffic to and from the town and begun growing in earnest. The various wooden-crafted buildings were mostly comprised of log cabins and other houses that were made out of forest trees. Small dirt roads ran into the town, while a larger road came in from both the west and the south. Flocks of small bird-like Pokemon flew over head, some like the odd Taillow or Fletchling resting on the roofs of the various houses. In the The lab was a rustic-looking building, an old wooden structure with large windows on the sides, with a sign that read 'Professor Hawthorn's Laboratory' sitting on the side of the building.

A laboratory aide was standing outside the building, calmly and politely directing prospective trainers into the laborary. She had black hair in a bob and wore brown horn-rimmed glasses, with a white labcoat and a black skirt with black leggings. She carried a clipboard, writing down information that the trainers gave to her before directing them inside to meet the professor in small groups.

Outside, waiting their turns to be called, a small group of trainers had been conversing with each other, while other trainers were just starting to arrive via cars, buses, and taxicabs, or even on foot.

The Journey So Far To Get Where We Need to Be!

Compared to the few fancy cruise-ships Jaques had heard off, like the Royal Unova or the Anne, the Riptide had been neither fast...nor as fancy as the name may have suggested. Probably just as dangerous, though, given the state the cabins with them being unpleasant and cramped, along with the ship itself seeming as if it was one bad storm away from sinking completely...

...Not to mention the meals provided would've made even the hungriest Snorlax in the world have second thoughts before chowing down.

So the moment that the announcement came that they'd finally docked at Dalett City, Jack was more than eager to get off the rust-bucket after double and triple-checking that the few belongs he had were packed and organized and hoping that by the end of his journey he'd have enough money to get home on something at least slightly safer and more comfortable.

"Okay, so where to from here...?"

Giving the Pokegear a few light taps to get the Town Map to display before being told the matching card couldn't be found,Jaques sighed before mulling over his options. Getting a lift or public transport would've cost money he didn't exactly have to spare... and he doubted taxi drivers would waive the fare if he'd won Pokemon battle like back home. That and not having any Pokemon to actually battle with anyway.

So after several attempts to ask for directions that resulted in a few incredulous looks as if he was crazy, a small group heading in that direction, either to the lab at Dalett Cave, to see friends in Aleph Town or make deliveries in Betata City and with the youth being so laser focused on getting to his destination that he was completely ignorant of the scenery on the trek to get there that it took a polite tap on the shoulder to snap him out of his trance to inform him they'd finally made it.

"Mm...? Ah, merci. Or, uh, thanks." Jack gave a small and slightly embarrassed smile and bow before parting ways with those had their own things to do in Aleph Town.

Still, here he was! It certainly wasn't a bad place to be, what with the rather old-fashioned houses and peaceful scenery reminding of Geosenge Town back home! And with what seemed like to be a line of people waiting outside of what he assumed was the Laboratory of that Pokemon Professor, Jack swiftly rushed over to see what was going on.

Hope you weren't expecting anything witty here. Maybe some day.

Nick the photographer - No Pokemon out - Aleph Town, outside the laboratory.

Off one of the cheaper busses stepped a teenager in a plaid flannel jacket, who stopped a moment to take a deep sniff of the air and stretch his arms above his head. "Ah, love these small towns out in the forests," he thought out loud to himself, lifting his camera up to his face and snapping some quick photos of the woods, the town, some of the bird Pokemon flying overhead, and then the general gathering of prospective trainers waiting outside the laboratory.

Nicklas, or Nick as he just went by because most people would incorrectly think that he had just misspoken, 'Nicholas,' was ready for his Pokemon adventure. Whereas most would be looking to train for battling, contests, or other practical applications of Pokemon, Nick was intending to be a Pokemon photographer. He had nothing against battling or contests, and would likely try dabbling in them a bit as well, but his true calling was for the camera, and it was through it that he was planning on making his money throughout his journey. At least, he would hope so.

Nick was also probably less prepared than he really thought he was, since as of the bus ride, he was practically out of cash. Partially because he wasn't particularly rich, and partially because he was not the best at planning far ahead, he had only really brought enough money to get to Aleph town, having forgotten that he'd probably be needing more after that. So he was down to his last spare bits of change, but he hadn't yet realized that that could be a problem.

Since he hadn't realized that potential problem yet, Nick was entirely focused on the present. He wandered through the small crowd of people waiting, taking pictures of the more interesting looking individuals.

Blaze: Aleph Town

Out of the same cheap bus as Nicholas came a fiery-haired girl that had been bouncing in her seat with excitement as they'd pulled up to Hawthorn's laboratory. She all but rocketed out of the bus and nearly tripped over several other potential trainers on her way out, shouting out sorries galore as she pushed through and planted her feet firmly into the dirt outside, staring at the laboratory ahead with a broad grin on her face.

"Wowww..." she quietly exclaimed, brushing a few strands of hair out of her eye line as she strode around to look at everything in the area. Benches, people, Pokémon, everything. Anytime she got a weird look from the objects of her interest, all she did was let out a sheepish giggle and gave them a wave hello. It was usually enough to make them shrug and move on.

It took all her limited self-control not to point and squeal at the cuter Pokémon, however. It was her first ever time seeing them this close! Not without her parents pulling her back, at any rate. She would've hung around just looking at things all day if she didn't suddenly remember why she was here, and she turned towards the laboratory—

Oh! There was someone with a camera. A boy from the bus she'd just been on; if she remembered correctly. She hadn't been paying attention to the other trainers, so she couldn't remember his name or anything. Deciding to go up to him, she made her presence known with heavy booted footsteps as she loudly cleared her throat and placed her hands on her hips.

Something, something, making herself look bigger and more important. She felt like it worked for getting people's attention.

"Hey there! Um, excuse me! This is my first time being in a place like this... is it okay if you take a picture of me with the lab in the background, please? I-I'll pay you if you want!" she asked, her voice trembling slightly both from nervousness and excitement as her boisterous demeanour fell away in favour of that of an excited kid. Which she most definitely was, so that made sense. "I-I just don't think a selfie will... cut it. Sorry, if that was rude to ask...!"

Aleph Town

A third occupant of the bus exited the vehicle, quietly yet politely thanking the bus driver as he stepped onto the ground and looked around the town. Joachim Lami, just having recently attained teenhood, looked to be just a little bit out of his element and comfort zone, but he was making the best of it as he walked around, eventually finding his way to outside of Professor Hawthorn's laboratory. Noticing the other trainers nearby, one of which looked quite excited to be here, he smiled and offered a friendly sort of wave, but otherwise kept to himself as he stood there and lightly bounced on his heels, trying to keep himself occupied and entertained while he waited.

Aleph Town, Waiting in Line.

For a few moments, Jaques glanced back at the bus and the new arrivals, giving a small sigh that he'd barely gotten there first but yet, couldn't help but impatiently tap his foot and glancing at his archaic Pokegear to keep track of the time...and the date.

"He...uh, the professor...isn't going to run out of Pokemon to give us, is he? It's been a while since that broadcast, I think..." Jack quietly remarked, folding his arms and trying not to look worried.

Aleph Town, Adrian

Unlike many of the others there, Adrian was not, in fact, a recent arrival.

In fact, he had been early.

Extremely early.

….like three hours early.

He had taken to passing the time counting the rings on stumps, taking note of the local architecture, all jotted down in his notebook for later study.

At the current moment, he was looking down, speaking to the image on his X-Transceiver, wired into an earbud.

“Uh-huh…yeah I’m here safe mama….yes, I ate earlier. Uh-huh…n-no I wasn’t too early, papa! I was, uh…right on ti-“

Whunph!

Adrian makes a squeaking sound, making rapid apologies to whoever he just bumped into.

From his hanging earbud, a giggle can be heard, “Nyahaha! Addy, you gotta pay attention~”

Adrian’s face goes bright red, “Sis! Okcallyoubackbye!” he squeaks as he rapidly disconnects the call.

Nick the photographer - No Pokemon out - Aleph Town, outside the laboratory.

And there it was, Nick's first customer already! A cute and spunky looking redhead girl who seemed to be around Nick's own age, maybe a little younger. "Sure thing!" he said with a wide grin, then looked at the laboratory for a moment of thought. Then he moved himself to where he thought he wouldn't be in the way, and could get a good looking angle on the building with a clear space for someone to pose beside it in the frame. "Alright, why don't you stand there- oh?"

It turned out Nick's spot wasn't as out of the way as he might've thought, as another boy around their age, wearing a lab coat, had suddenly bumped into him. "Oh, no worries man, sorry about that," Nick replied with a friendly smile still on his face as Adrian apologized. Then Nick noted the lab coat, and raised an eyebrow. "Are you an assistant at the lab?" he wondered, but at the same time returned his attention to pointing his camera at the building. "There, a little to your left," Nick then directed to the redhead girl, and gave her a moment to pick a pose of her liking before he would take the photo.

Blaze: Aleph Town

"Thank you~!" Blaze cheered as Nick agreed to take her photo, and she ran over to the spot he directed to and put a cheesy grin on her face as she flashed a couple of peace signs at the camera. As soon as the photo was taken, she excitedly ran back over to him, bouncing on the balls of her feet with seemingly nonstop energy.

"Thankyouthankyouthankyou~! I'm gonna keep that picture forever! Uh, so long as I don't lose it...!" she chuckled sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck with her hand before noticing the others that were nearby. She promptly gave them all a big wave, once again hopping up and down to make herself more obvious.

It was becoming readily apparent that if anything Blaze was someone who was hard to miss.

"Heyyy, everyone! Are you all excited?!'Cause I'm super excited...!"

She trailed off into giggles, before clasping her hands together and glancing towards the laboratory in thought.

"I wonder what we'll get... gah, I hope mine's cute. I-I mean even if it's a scary Pokémon I know I'll love it, but..."

Klarysa: Aleph Town

One could have been forgiven for assuming, at first glance, that the latest approaching figure was some as yet undiscovered Grass-type Pokemon. But no, it was a human, her torn clothes covered in grass stains, her already unruly red hair decorated with twigs and shoots, sporting the expression of one on the cusp of an enormous migraine. Because she was on the cusp of an enormous migraine.

Having finally reached her destination, Klarysa Wojnicz stopped to take in the sight of Aleph Town. A typical rustic, sleepy little lab town, from the look of it. Normally such a location would have her bored to tears and desperate to leave, but given she was currently 0.3 seconds away from a splitting headache, quiet and sleepy suited her just fine.

Maybe now was a good time for a little telekinesis practice? Klarysa focused her mental energies on a particularly large, annoying twig her hair had wrapped itself around on the journey here. There was a barely visible crackle of pink lightning around the twig. It twitched. Klarysa's eyes throbbed. She decided that was enough practice for today. Fucking migraines.

As she approached the lab, Klarysa couldn't help but notice that the small crowd presumably gathered to obtain a starter from the Professor was composed mostly of children several years younger than her. Great. She'd always heard it was normal to start a League challenge young, but she'd been hoping her journey wouldn't consist entirely of beating the shit out of grade schoolers. Or, worse, getting the shit beaten out of her by grade schoolers. Just entertaining the thought made her twitch a little in rage.

There were some of the little shits right now, doing... whatever the fuck it was kids did, she didn't care, she was too close to excruciating pain to bother listening to the high-pitched yapping of infants. She wanted to get to the lab as bad as they did, though, so she lurked near Blaze and Nick, neither realising nor caring how intimidating it must be to be 15 or less and have a stooped, raggedy 18-year-old with a Team Skull backpack grimacing right next to you like she's personally offended by your existence.

Nick gave Blaze a nod and lowered his camera. "Alright, you got a phone to transfer it to?" he wondered, taking his backpack off and preparing to go through it for his connector cable. That's when he paused, feeling another nearby presence, and glanced over at the menacing figure of Klarysa...

"Oh, hello there!" Nick said in a friendly tone, unfazed by her appearance and indeed oblivious to any sign that he should be wary of this individual, or the aggressive expression she was giving him. "Were you wanting a picture too?"

Blaze: Aleph Town

"Ooh, uh, yup! P-Please don't laugh at it, I know it's old...!" Blaze sheepishly said as she pulled her phone out of her pocket; a bulky device from a near-decade or so ago that had been hand-painted with a flame pattern presumably by the girl's own hand. "Here! Um, I don't know how this works... do you need my number? 'Cause I can give you that... o-oh, hi..."

She swallowed somewhat at the strange girl who had sort of skulked up to them with a nasty look on her face, and on instinct Blaze took a few steps back as if afraid she'd do something. Was this person violent? Or just in a bad mood? Blaze had been told to stay away from people like that, but if this was a fellow trainer...

She didn't know what to do, so she just gave the girl a nervous smile and then turned towards the lab anxiously. Things would be okay once they got moving. They'd meet the Professor, get their first Pokémon, and do... other stuff...

Aleph Town, Adrian

First he bumps into a cameraman and suddenly he’s caught in the whirl that is Blaze.

Oh Arceus, oh gosh, what is happening, wow she’s pretty, oh heck-

With near literal spirals in his eyes, Adrian rights himself, then addresses Nick.

“O-Oh, uh…no, I’m not an…assistant for the professor here. I…dunno why you’d…”

He looks down at his ruffled lab coat. His rolled up right sleeve, the splotches of now dried ink on his left cuff.

“…oh. Yeah, no…I’m here for what I assume the rest of…you…a-“

He trails off as he slowly locks eyes with Klarysa.

If looks could kill, I’d be a stain on the ground-

He offers a sheepish wave while trying to make himself smaller.

Klarysa: Aleph Town

The younglings are all shrinking a little at the sight of her. Good. They know their place. Klarysa gives the one person who looks to be around her age a look that's more questioning than anything.

"I mean... dunno why the fuck you'd want to, but sure, take a photo." Her coarse accent immediately marks her as someone not from these parts. She doesn't bother to strike a pose for the photograph, remaining in the exact same slouched posture she'd stumbled onto the scene in.

Aleph Town, Waiting in Line: Jaques.

....Perhaps mentioning his worries about missing out combined with his unimposing and small stature resulted in the would-be trainer being pushed aside and shoved further back down the line despite his protests, making Jaques even more uneasy and rummage through his backpack to make sure they hadn't taken anything before giving a small sigh of relief.

"...so très impoli." Jack sighed, dusting off his jacket, doing his best to stay composed before noticing he was a bit closer to those newcomers, giving a curt bow and small wave to the group, standing on his toes to try and look a little taller...and speaking up for those who may have been distracted, like Joachim.

"Uh, bonjur, hallo, greetings, good tidings and...all...that. I take it you're all waiting and hoping there'll be Pokemon left for us, too...?"

Nick the photographer - No Pokemon out - Aleph Town, outside the laboratory.

Nick was mildly taken aback, especially when Klarysa swore, and looked mildly concerned for a moment. "Well, I like to take photos, it's what I do, but I was asking if you wanted a photo," he replied, and thought for a moment... He wondered if this was like, one of those people who don't like to say that they want something, even when they do; something about appearing tough or independent. She had, technically, told him to take a photo, so. Nick moved slightly, getting an angle of Klarysa with the laboratory in the background, and snapped a quick picture.

With that, Nick turned his attention back to Blaze. "As long as it works, what's to judge?" he reasoned, then opened his backpack and found his connector cable. "So let's get you that photo," he added, plugging one end to his camera and offering the other end to her.

"Ah, thank you~!" Blaze chirped as she took the other end of the cable, plugging it into her phone as she smiled gratefully at Nick for his patience. That other girl, the slouchy one, was definitely grumpy and probably someone she shouldn't get too involved with right away. The boy in the lab coat had looked at her in a daze for a few moments, and she wondered why. But then her attention fell on Jack as he asked them all his question, and she gave him a firm nod and a grin of barely-contained excitement.

"Yup! I can't wait... they won't rush through them all without us, right? I just hope the cute ones don't get snatched up... oh! You guys know what Pokemon are, right? Wh-What kind would do you wanna get if you could get anything...?" she asked, her eyes brightening even as she hoped that they didn't read too much into what she said about them knowing what Pokemon were.

She felt a little like some of the older people in her village who didn't understand T Vs. Compared to the other kids, she was behind.

For a moment, Blaze's rather positive attitude and energy caused Jack to give a slightly nervous smile in response.

"Oui, er, yes, I guess we can only wait and see. And I know some...! And I know what my parents wanted me to get...Bunnelby was one of them, but there's plenty of them back home. Then they suggested that shiny coin...cat from Kanto, but..." Jack shook his head, looking a little uneasy at the idea.

"W-Well, as long as it's not a cat or a dog or that one fish my parents were tricked into buying, I...think I'll be okay with whatever is left!"

"Huh? Know what they are? I mean... Yeah?" Nick replied, in a somewhat confused tone. He did not, as Blaze might assume, think that she didn't know what Pokemon were. Rather, he thought that she was under the impression that they might not know, and he was really confused about why she would think that. "Though, I don't know a lot about them, except the ones from back home," he admitted, with a mild shrug.

"If I could have any I want, though? Huh... Probably an Eevee, I'd say. It's the only one I know of that has different evolutions it can be, instead of just one, and I think that's really interesting. I wonder what Pokemon in other regions are like that," Nick then thought out loud, as per Blaze's other question. "But I don't know if I'd be happy with just one of them. I'd want to have enough to have one of each of them," he continued, shrugging his arms out and shaking his head. "Plus I think it'd be better if I got one that wasn't from my home region. That'd be more interesting."

“Well, ah…my mama, er, my mother and father run a daycare, so I grew up around Pokémon.”

Adrian shuffles his feet, glad to be able to distract himself from the dour girl.

“If I could get…anything, huh?” A glimmer of excitement shines in his eyes for a moment as he contemplates his choices, “Gosh…we saw so many come and go every day…not to mention all the ones Uncle J would bring when he visited…oh! Sis’ poison types were cool too!” A small smile begins to form before stretching ear to ear, “I almost can’t choose! But if I need to, hm…a Shinx would be cool. Oh! But Mareep and Wooloo are nice too! Oh! Or maybe a Snom?”

Adrian begins to rock on his feet as a sort of excitement builds in his voice. Blaze’s energy is infectious, it seems.

Robert-Outside The Lab

He stepped out of the rented car with a twinge of pain. The bus might have been faster, but being able to stretch out his leg after the long plane ride was lovely. Thankfully the weather was nice today. Leaning on his stick a bit more heavily than usual, Rab approached the door to the lab.

Hmm, there's already a group of people here. He'd known that the Professor's announcement would attract hopeful Trainers, but nonetheless, he had nursed a secret hope that the turnout would be small. No such luck. Ah well. Rab elected to approach a smaller gathering of kids his own age. That girl looks very happy and excited. And that girl....does not. A photographer. A young man in a fancy outfit. And a few others he couldn't immediately place. They all seem well-dressed for traveling, anyway.

Rab moved up more closely to the other Trainers-to-be. "I'm sure Hawthorne's planned ahead. He'd know he'd get a lot of attention." He pondered for a moment. "He said from around the world. I wonder what types of Pokemon he's collected? If he specializes?" He turned to the sour-looking girl. "What are you hoping to find here?"

Klarysa: Aleph Town

Klarysa was glad the camera didn't flash as bright as they did when she was a kid. Right now, a sudden jet of light would be all it took to send her sprawling and swearing.

Blaze and Rab's questions give her pause. Come to think of it, she'd never really considered what Pokemon she wanted in any depth. She just knew she wanted Pokemon, because a Trainer journey was the best excuse going to wander as you pleased.

"...iunno," she eventually ventures. "I'd want... something tough, I guess?"

Klarysa is set to be disappointed. Male Meowstic, the final form of her eventual starter, is so poor competitively that it has no Smogon tier. Their current guide simply reads, "Don't use Meowstic".

Jaques, Waiting in Line.

With even more people turning up, Jaques nervously adjusted his scarf, quickly glancing around and counting how many soon-to-be trainers or coordinators.

Still, the newcomer did have a point as Jack gave a curt nod in response to Robert's comment.

"Maybe...hopefully he's different since I know a lot people back home...mentioned Professor, uh, Scyamore and I...think the only options he offered were one Grass, Water or Fire type. Maybe three from, uh...um...oh! Kanto! If you were lucky! But it'd make sense if they're researchers to have all sorts of Pokemon, wouldn't it...?"

Aleph Town, outside the laboratory

As the trainers gathered outside the laboratory, the doors swung open, and a small group of young trainers exited the lab. A young boy was proudly holding a Ralts in his hands, a huge smile on his face as he held the small Psychic-type Pokemon aloft. Next to him, a girl a few years older than him smiled at him while carrying a Pidove on one arm. A taller, wide-framed boy walked behind them, leading a Chinchou waddling after him. Finally, an older teenager led up the rear, looking over his shoulder as a Sizzlipede scuttled after him.

The aide standing in front of the lab smiled and spoke with them briefly, before she tapped on her clipboard to get the gathered group's attention.

"All right, all right, next ones to come in are..." She checked her clipboard, writing some things down. "You four," she said suddenly, pointing to Jacques, Nicklas, Blaze and Joachim. "Come in, come in, you don't want to leave the professor waiting, do you?"

I can still hail the Horde even though the company has shamed us. Strength and Honor even if Blizzard has neither.

Kara Niles - Outside The Lab, Alpha Town

Kara's trip to Aleph town had not been an easy one. Even if she was used to hiking, her backpack was particularly heavy this time around. Of course, since it was a completely unknown region, she had no idea what she could run into. Jungles, tundras, mountains, deserts, perhaps even volcanoes! She had to be prepared for anything and everything.

Of course, being prepared to traverse almost any terrain came at the expense of not having much money leftover to buy... actual things a trainer would need, like pokeballs, potions, antidotes, and other such implements. What she had on hand would have to do for the time being.

After a lot of walking, the laboratory finally came into view, which renewed her vigor, and caused her to promptly pick up her pace. This was... not the wisest of moves, since she arrived ever so slightly more fatigued than she would have had she just... walked there. Nonetheless, she made it, which meant she could finally drop the large, heavy backpack behind her, and just... sit on the ground to rest, joining the queue alongside the charming fellows gathered there while she removed a leaf or two from her hair.

Right on time to watch a batch of people come out of the building with their new companions in tow, which she did with the most childlike shine in her eyes.

"Man... I really can't wait for my turn."
