Marvel Comics cleanup and maintenance

Go To

A thread offering assistance and support for tropers covering Marvel's many, many stories and characters.

This includes the shared Marvel Universe, but not the cultural Disney juggernaut known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). One of our aims is to disentangle tropes and characters from the MCU adaptations from pages about their source material.

This scope does cover Marvel comic, manga and webcomic stories, characters and tropes that are unconnected to that shared Marvel Universe - e.g. their licensed Star Wars, Alien and Predator stories.

As of September 2021, there were about 27,000 Marvel comics published across 4,900 or so different series. They started publishing in the 1940s as Timely Comics, then became Atlas Comics and - eventually - Marvel. As a consequence, Marvel have a lot of Comic Book and Characters pages on the site (and have recently started publishing Webcomics as well).

The sheer scale of this means that there's so much material (with dozens of new comics added each week) that no one troper is likely to own or read all of it - especially as there are big gaps in what's available digitally or reprinted (and licensed characters and legal issues mean that certain stories may never be reprinted at all).

And that can make troping their shared universe pretty tricky - even Marvel's own creative teams have been known to lose track now and then.

We've got tropers busily revising existing pages, while others add new information weekly as new comics are published. This thread's here to help with any queries that generates, to focus work on particular pages that could use improvement, and to help ensure that we tackle works page names and other aspects in a consistent way that makes sense to readers navigating between different Marvel-related pages (as well as following best practice for the wiki as a whole).

Feel free to post here to draw attention to relevant posts or threads elsewhere - e.g. if examples, images, captions and quotes, or spoiler policies for these pages are under discussion.
There are existing threads and standard guidelines for those topics (e.g. Image Pickin' has its own, very structured, process), and this shouldn't duplicate any of that - but tropers reading this thread may wish to vote or comment once they know about those discussions.
    ComicBook page guidance
  • If there's a consistent creative team, they should be named in the introduction. Ideally, include inkers and colorists as well as other artists.
  • The page image doesn't always have to be the first issue cover.
  • Pages for arcs, runs and events should include the relevant titles and issue numbers.
  • Pages should include start and end dates in the introduction
  • Links regarding particular characters (e.g. Wolverine) should go to their Characters page, not their ComicBook page.

    Character page guidance
  • As a rule, characters in Marvel Universe continuity only get one Character page profile, regardless of how many different series they appear in. However:
    • Alternate Universe and Bad Future variants may justify their own profile, and sometimes the same can be said for Split Personality scenarios.
    • It may be appropriate to add a character to a relevant Character page with an intro and a link to their full profile on another page (e.g. many villains have been major characters in several different series)
  • Creation of any new Character Specific Pages, and proposals to merge any of them back into other pages, should go via the Character Specific Pages cleanup thread, but it's worth posting here as well.
  • If you're splitting, merging or moving characters between different Character pages, it's worth checking with the Character Page Cleanup thread as well as posting here.

The Maker has his own page though

The maker was cut awhile ago and merged back into Ultimate Fantastic Four as he wasn't long enough.

[up][up][up] The zombies were the same ones from Marvel Zombies, though.

I'm still disappointed that Hickman completely disregarded Donny Cates' setup. From an in-universe perspective that means we either still have a completely different Maker on what's left of the original Earth-1610 plotting to overwrite Earth-616 with it, or something caused him to give up on that plan and go with the one he did in Ultimate Invasion.

[up]Yeah Hickman just completely went a different direction with it. In-universe though id probably go with option B as that's cleaner. Still sucks though.

Just letting everyone know that Characters.Ultimate Universe 2023 and Characters.Ultimate Spider Man 2024 are both up and running. I know there was discussion about what to name the pages but I guess that choice was made for us.

[up][up] Im calling to change it since we were discussing it and the decision was made without our input

Someone might want to ping them and let them know about it. There was no character page beforehand so there was no way of knowing there was a discussion. Not everyone checks every forum. I was honestly getting ready to make it myself but they beat me to it. Or at least sandbox it.

Edit: I just let them know that things are being discussed.

Hey all. Sorry, I didn't know there was a discussion on this, and I mentioned to Gate Star X that I wasn't sure what to call it either. Since Ultimate Marvel was taken, this seemed like the next best thing, barring using Ultimate Universe, which would be kinda weird since it's a trope name and could very easily be confused with Ultimate Marvel anyway.

I think the year is much better than the universe designation, because that would then need to be applied to everything for consistency. Other works with years in their names that have character pages use the year without a problem too. Plus, Marvel barely ever use the universe designations themselves.

Sorry again, didn't know I was jumping the gun or anything.

Work pages are a free launch, and that includes the subpages.

But once they're launched, they're subject to wiki consensus in the usual way. So we have scope to move to a preferred name if that's what consensus supports.

Though I prefer Earth 6160, New Ultimate Universe is another possibility

I still think unless we’re going to do a major overhaul on all the pages, it’s easier to leave it as it. I mean I’d love to but that’s a big project to commit to and I’m sure it would confuse a lot of people.

I think the simplest answer for now is to leave it as is for anyone to find easily.

I mean you’re probably right tbh, but I feel this is the same kind of scenario as Heroes Reborn (2021), as both are reboots of the original concepts.

Also most people probably won’t know the universe names or care, I mean we’re all pedantic and I’m ok with that, but the regular person would just google it and link it as Ultimate Universe 2023. That’s what the other wiki is calling it. Sometimes Occams Razor is the best solution.

That’s why I like going with an all or nothing approach, we change one page here or there and we can’t get a unified format set across all the works.

Yeah, I think the series title and the year is much better than universe designations which most people don't even know. New Ultimate Universe is a fan name and isn't exactly timeless if they ever reboot Ultimate Marvel again, so if we're changing it from Ultimate Universe (2023), then I reckon we wait for something more official.

Now that Kid Venom has got his own ongoing on the way, and a one-shot compiling all of the C-stories from Death of the Venomverse, would it be worthwhile creating a Kid Venom page?

The Maker gets a character profile on Ultimate Universe (2023) as well as his main one elsewhere.

Given that he's a cross-universe character, and the "Earth-6160" version is the same person, in the same continuity (and not an alternate-timeline variant etc.), they should probably be fully merged?

Yes? Maybe? I don't know what's going on with him anymore. I heard there were incarnations of him scattered across the Multiverse that were being hunted down by the Earth-1610 Avengers, but then we have the one from Cates' Venom run and the one from Ultimate Invasion both hanging out on Earth-616 (at least until the former returned to Earth-1610) with zero explanation...

It's never simple... grin

On a related note, any concerns if I swap the first line of the Ultimate navbox around, as shown below:

The current version has the two links in the first line as chained sinkholes, which isn't ideal. Swapping them makes it easier to rephrase and separate them.

Don’t we put all the Makers tropes on his own page? We try to never have more than one folder on the same character

[up] That was my initial thought as well...

My bad, the DC pages have a fair amount of overlap where a characters shows up on more than one page, with them having a main, comprehensive page, but how they appear in the context of a series on that series' page. I remember the Marvel pages doing something similar before and thought it was still a thing.
