You know, this is probably one of the aspects of having a disability that irks me the most. As my profile page shows, I really do like cosplay, my friend (who surprisingly isn't into anime) got me into it when I was a kid. The issue I've (and my friends, for other reasons) had is my disability isn't subtle, and that alters the presentation. Yes, people are nice about it, but annoyingly it off-puts people to see, for example, a Vegeta in a wheelchair or a Sonic on leg braces. You might see that subtly alluded to in the visual.

As much as I'd like to say "this is me", there are some parts of it that are affected. I remember going to the same convention as the other picture and saw some amazing other cosplayers and remarking how I had never even knew until then the goal was to get people to take pictures of you until I watched them succeed at it because only one has ever been done of me. It doesn't help that, as loved as Japan is for other things, it is not (culturally/subconsciously) disability-friendly compared to other places (the reason we're nine generations into Pokémon and only ever got Wally from ORAS). The odds are not good.

Some of us will never be able to change some parts of ourselves, so does anyone have any tips about this and how to cosplay "against" this? Not sure if I want this to be a megathread or not, depending on if all the things can be solved with a few all-purpose methods or there are several "secret" tricks people can use depending on the costume and the condition (for example, if you were Eggman, you could make a wheelchair look like his flying chair).

i know a mermaid is kind of obvious for a wheelchair costume... but still really cool! i saw an amazing hippocampus wheelchair fursuit by Beastcub a while ago. i think some kind of aquatic creature with smaller fake legs and a big tail could work too (a really big vaporeon? i can make sketches) if you're of the furry variety, plus it would provide a reasonable explanation as to why you can't leave your chair (these legs are made for swimming, not walking, there's air over here, etc...) some kind of classical harpy (with the human heads on bird bodies) might be interesting and plausible, too, if you're into making your own characters.

there are my wheelchair ideas :V
