The Reason You Suck Speech - Real Life Section Clean Up

"The Reason You Suck" Speech has been deemed to Keep Real Life Examples by the thread three times now, but like the political memes, that doesn't mean it can't get a cleanup. There's a few concerning problems with the page:

1. Wall of Text quotes. There really isn't any reason to have a block of text that takes up an entire screen.

2. Gushing about the speech giver. There's a fair amount of "And it was awesome" or describing the speeches as "epic".

3. ROCEJ violations and potholing to NRLEP tropes. There's particularly concerns about some YouTubers mentioned here that have... concerning viewpoints.

4. Just generally shitty examples. Looking at you, person who gave a TRYSS to the Jem and the Holograms movie for ruining "muh childhood".

If I recall correctly, wasn’t one of the requirements for real life examples after they were kept was that the target had to hear them, which means examples talking about someone not present don’t count.

That's a good specification, but a lot of these are either on TV or on the internet and thus we might not be able to know about whether the recipient actually saw the speech, or if they shouldn't count on principle if the speech giver and the speech recipient weren't actually together in the same room (or if the recipient had a known response).

I think that was more a specification against when Video Review Show episodes have speeches directed towards the creators of the work being reviewed, since there’s no guarantee that they would ever happen across them.

Part of the trope is that it's supposed to be one character getting dressed down by another one. I mean, it's not really a "You Suck" speech if the "you" isn't even around to hear it. Then it'd just be "The Reason They Suck Speech".

So the rules I'm getting are:

1. The recipient of the speech must hear the speech. If it's just someone going on a rant about how someone or thing sucks, it's not this trope, unless...

2. The recipient has a response.

Let's take the two Stephen Colbert examples:

    Colbert
  • Stephen Colbert also stood five feet from George W. Bush and tore him a new one in a most humiliating but amusing way possible. What's even amusing is that Bush actually laughed too, which is something rare.
    • Also an amazing Take That!, but Stephen's deconstruction of Sarah Palin, and her increased importance in news media after the '08 election.
"I know you think this story has no purpose other than keeping Sarah Palin’s name in the headlines for another news cycle. I know you think she has nothing to offer the national dialogue and that her speeches are just coded talking points mixed in with words picked up at random from a thesaurus. I know you think Sarah Palin is at best a self-promoting ignoramus and at worst a shameless media troll who will abuse any platform to deliver dog-whistle encouragement to a far-right base that may include possible insurrectionists. I know you think her reality show was pathetically unstatesmanlike, and at the same time, I know you believe it represents the pinnacle of her potential. And that her transparent desperation to be a celebrity so completely eclipsed her interest in public service so long ago that there would be more journalistic integrity on reporting one of the lesser Kardashians’ ass implants. I know, I know that when you arrive at the office each day you say a silent prayer that maybe—just maybe—Sarah Palin will at long last just shut up for just 10 fucking minutes. I know because I can see it in your eyes. Well, guess what, Mika? That’s the gig. And it’s only January of 2011, kiddo. And you have a minimum of two more years of this ahead of you. You want to stay in this game? You dig deep. You find another gear. You show up to work every day and get your hair and makeup done. You slap on a smile, get out there on TV and repeat what Sarah Palin said on Hannity last night right into the lens. You know... news".

By these rules, the first example would count. It was a TRYSS to George Bush and he was there to hear it. The second would not count as it was just Colbert preaching to his choir about how much Sarah Palin sucks. (I also think that bullet should get axed for having a TL DR worthy quote block and the gushy amazing).

I believe that there should be similar speeches made by non-American satirists such as Rick Mercer the Canadian.

Kirby is awesome.

Like... are you just saying that they exist or that they should be added?

[up][up][up] Regarding the first example, it mentions that Bush was laughing at it and I don’t know if Actually Pretty Funny is mutually exclusive with this trope.

Thumped: Wow. That was rude. Too many of this kind of thump will bring a suspension. Please keep it civil.

Okay, let's not be so salty.

I'm fine with just going through chunk by chunk and determining what keeps, what needs to be edited, and what should go.
