Symbolism has always been a literary tool I’ve wanted to apply but never knew how to utilize without making it feel shoehorned or ham-fisted. However, I had an idea that I wanted to play around with. I found that my attempts at symbolism always manifested as elements that would complicate the plot in an attempt to make it fit narratively speaking. Then I thought about old myths and decided to go a different direction. In short, I wanted to make the overarching plot very straightforward and simple (in this case the slaying of a dragon in the style of Saint George) so that it could serve as a vehicle for character study and symbolism rather than the symbolism being part of the basic plot itself. Is this a good approach to symbolism and subtext?
