Note: ~Nine Tailed Cat wrote this opening post and gave others permission to make this thread, so I went ahead and did it since I closed a thread.

Would Hit a Girl often falls under People Sit on Chairs, having no narrative significance. Most examples I've seen are in cases where you wouldn't expect the attacker to care about gender, such as fighting Action Girls or with animals and monsters that don't know or care about human gender roles. While there are tropeworthy uses where characters are willing to harm defenceless (or seemingly-defenceless) women, fighting a woman who can clearly fight back says no more about a character than fighting a man does. The trope needs to be redefined to get rid of the pointless cases and focus only on ones where the attacked person being female actually matters.

A wick check of 76 wicks yielded the following results:

  • 22 of them (29%) are correct examples with clear notability.
  • 25 of them (33%) are technically correct, but not meaningful in-universe.
  • 10 of them (13%) are either ZCE or misuse.
  • 19 of them (25%) are unclear or mixed.

Well, the fact it's the page image doesn't really matter (although the image probably isn't illustrative anymore) If someone wants to make an image thread for it, they can.

I removed that example because it's just a character beating up girls and the example writeup didn't mention any in-universe acknowledgment or double standard.

EDIT: Cleaned up WouldHitAGirl.Live Action Films and looks like someone already cleaned WouldHitAGirl.Literature.

Actually, we still have WouldHitAGirl.Professional Wrestling to clean. I don't think the main trope page has been cleaned so there's that too.

I don't think I have the energy to deal with the Pro Wrestling page personally.

I cleaned some of the Live Action examples.

I just cut WouldHitAGirl.Professional Wrestling because none of the examples appear to acknowledge gender stereotypes in-universe. I also finished cleaning up WouldHitAGirl.Live Action TV. All that's left is the Would Hit a Girl main page. I cleaned some examples but I'll do the rest tomorrow.

Looks like WouldHitAGirl.Video Games needs another pass. I'll do that later.

If I manage to finish cleaning the on page examples today, I'll move on to cleaning the wicks.

Coming back to this. I think I'll do the rest of the on page examples after wick cleaning if no one else does.

I found this entry on Characters.Trails Series Erebonia Ironblood which I am unsure of.

  • Would Hit a Girl: He slashed Vita in the back near the end of Cold Steel II and later on fatally stabbed Arianrhod In the Back near the end of Cold Steel IV.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the new definition is "character hitting a girl being portrayed in a negative light". I'm not getting any of that here.

No, the new definition requires that the narrative acknowledges gender dynamics or how men hitting women rejects traditional gender norms.

That's example doesn't mention any of that so I'd remove it.

[up] Just out of curiosity, how do I identify that? So that way, if I come across a potentially misused example, I can remove it.

Here's a sample of examples I kept. They all feature commentary on gender norms.

  • Baccano!'s Claire Stanfield considers himself an equal rights activist: he fights for the right of people of all genders to have their asses kicked by Claire Stanfield.
  • In the Bamboo Blade manga, Toyama likes to Kick the Dog by beating up on new kendo club members, and Kirino mentions "Boys or girls, it doesn't matter to him. In fact, I think he picks on the girls even more." Of course, this makes the reader cheer that much harder when Tamaki beats his ass.
  • Basilisk: Saemon Kisaragi of the Koga Ten says it's not in him to hit or kill women... right after he kills Hotarubi of the Iga Ten by cutting off both of her hands and stabbing her in the chest, then letting her fall down a cliff.

Bumping to raise awareness of this trope's wick cleaning project, as it's been almost 5 months since this thread's last post.

[up] I've been keeping track of wicks/namespaces inconsistently. Fanfic/, Literature/, Manga/, Film/ and probably Characters/ are going to be the quickest to go over so I'll see how much is left after that.

Maybe this is a Dead Horse trope.

Crown Description:

Concerns were raised that Would Hit A Girl's definition is too broad, and that the definition should be rewritten as proposed here, here, and here. Renaming was also suggested. Should it be rewritten, and should it be renamed?
