Real happy for the creators and fans of this movie. I feel like less than a decade ago it'd have been steamrolled by some mediocre doomed-romance movie you won't remember in two weeks. [lol]

Yes, I'm greatly pleased. Like I said in the Oscars thread I didn't prefer it for all the Oscars it won, but I wanted it to win Best Actress and BP most of all and I think its stellar performance overall is a good sign for the future of filmmaking.

God.

This movie is going to be another movie that will constantly fill me with regret for not watching in the theater (I was busy during that time...).

Glad Yeoh got the award, that was a heavy role.

Oh dang, I realized I never actually reacted about the movie in this thread. So that's embarrassing.

But yeah, suffice to say, I feel so vindicated for seeing this movie in theaters. At first, I thought it'd be straightforward with the "middle-aged Asian mother/wife learns about the multiverse and saves it" angle, but it became so much more than that.

And yeah, the kid who was Short Round becoming the anti-nihilistic Waymond will never not be an insane turn of events for Ke Huy Quan, especially now that KHQ got a freaking Oscar. (Admittedly I'm bummed that Hsu got snubbed as Joy/Jobu Tupaki, but it's not like Jamie Lee Curtis didn't phone her role(s?) in, right?)

Actually, EEAAO scoring Best Freaking Picture is still insanely great, and for some reason, I can't stop thinking about the scene where Evelyn and Jobu are rocks.

I actually think Curtis was the least deserving supporting actress nominee even when considering it was a legacy/career Oscar (Angela Bassett we will avenge you), but I guess she played the same game everyone else in the film did.

For those who weren’t tuning in, noted theater kid Hsu subbed in for Mitski to perform “This is a Life” at the ceremony:

Well, even though I prefer Top Gun Maverick as far as best films of 2022 go, I cannot deny that EEAAO was one heck of an awesome movie. It's good to see such a creative flick sweep the awards.

Now if only Yeoh could collaborate with Tom Cruise on a movie soon. tongue

I saw the movie the other day. I was thinking it doesn't really touch on any new ground when it comes to the concept of the multiverse but where it shines and utterly dominates is the presentation. It goes as utterly insane as it possibly can and searches for ways it can top the last insane thing. The script by itself could have been directed a little more traditionally and probably have been serviceable, but this approach feeds into the mind bending idea of what it means to gaze into infinite realities.

The emotional climax of Evelyn and Waymond's characters, Waymond being the one to lift Evelyn out of the nihilism Jobu Topaki found herself in, resonated with me.

It's just a few seconds of a bit, but Jobu Tapaki moving through the multiverse early in the film is the coolest thing I've ever seen. Just turning an imaginary dial and clicking through different realities until she finds the one she's looking for. Holy shit. Those few seconds told us everything we needed to know about what our multiversal villain was capable of.

Also, "Now you're just making up sounds!" Evelyn hit the nail on the head. Juju Chewbacca's name literally doesn't mean anything. There is no significance, and that's what makes it significant. It's just an assortment of mouth sounds that are fun to say. Because nothing means anything.

This is such a good movie and I cannot gush about it enough. It deserved to win so many awards. It deserves to win more awards. It deserves every award. It's the most movie that any movie has ever been.

Not going to be able to look at bagels the same way again after this movie. Using an everything bagel as a metaphor for infinite universes and the extent of Joy's depression is just...

And then there's this scene.

Rock Universe was great in a surprisingly number of ways.

Third act Rock Evelyn spinning around to reveal googly eyes because "there are no rules" is just. It killed me. Hilarious, poignant, and triumphant all at once.

This movie is so good, you guys.

I love this movie! It was fantastic.

There's an odd, unspoken joke in this movie, and it goes as follows: "Me, a lesbian? With the tax woman?? Not in a million years!" Cue the multiverse coming up with a universe where humans evolved hot dog fingers and where Evelyn and Deirdre are the most romantic, filmatic lesbian couple ever. Make of that what you will.

I also felt that Becky was a bit underused. You'd think that as Joy's love interest, she'd feature a bit more prominently, though the way she keeps protecting her and keeping her out of all the drama despite everything is sweet in its own right. Perhaps there could have been a version of Becky who confronts Joy about her behaviour in some way? I think that would have reinforced Joy's own redemption.

I mean, consider that for a nihilist, Joy sure cares a lot for Becky, which is something that could have been a very powerful counter to her nihilism.

To elaborate on the film, I feel its main theme of acceptance of lesbianism a bit muddled.

For one, the central conflict is Evelyn not accepting Joy's girlfriend (through deflection onto her father), but this never seems to play much of a role in why Joy is so upset with her, and Joy's exact motivations remain somewhat obscure. Joy also consistently shuts Becky out from this conflict, and seems to focus exclusively on her mom for her multiversal suicide pact, never even considering how Becky would react to this. And Becky never gets the chance to confront her on this point, either.

Another issue is tying Lesbo!Mom to the evolutionary-abberation-universe, which is otherwise devoted to the gross-out jokes surrounding sucking on hot dog fingers and such, which is apparently their version of affection, and which Evelyn is visibly disgusted by in one shot. That doesn't really seem to gel well with the idea of Evelyn coming to terms with the lesbian relationship of her daughter, never mind her own apparent latent lesbian feelings for Deirdre.

I still like this movie, and I think it has its heart in the right place, but it makes some questionable choices along the way.

Optimism is a duty.
