Hi all, it's been quite some time since I've been here and I'm trying to get back into my writing.

The issue I have is when I'm writing historical fiction/fantasy; I come up with plot/character ideas and get a nice story arc in my head, but then upon research find out that there are things that just wouldn't make sense.

The Wi P right now is set between the two attempted Mongol invasions of Japan. My MC (Tomoe Michiharu) is descended from Minamoto Yoshinaka via Tomoe Gozen (who is a legendary enough figure that I feel okay playing a bit with her story). Tomoe supposedly died at the Battle of Awazu and walked into the sea. In my story, she was borne up by sea kami and taken to Kyushu, where she started a new life and founded a school of kenjutsu. I picked Kyushu because that's where the landing point would be after Tsushima and Iki.

Which brings me to present day, around 1279 CE. My second MC (Ishikawa Yuriko) is where I'm tripping up the most. I originally conceived of her as the daughter of a Japanese expatriate, living amongst the court of Kublai Khan and having made friends with some people from Marco Polo's expedition, thereby gaining some insight into European thought/culture.

Her father is one of the emissaries sent to demand Japan's surrender by petitioning the government at Kamakura (near Kyoto iirc). While he is sent out to negotiate, she stays in Kyushu, living and working at an inn near Michi's sword school. I'm trying to think of whether this can make sense in any form or how I can change things up so it does.
