The Film and TV Industries

Go To

Since we have a thread discussing the video game industry, I thought it would be appropriate to have a thread discussing the practices and going ons of the film and tv industries. Especially in light of recent news surrounding the sets of Batwoman and Rust.

This will not be about films and tv shows but rather about the practices and behind-the-scenes news affecting the industries.

Was it credible? I ask because people have been trying to get the Velma numbers forever to figure out what HBO considers successful and as far as I know have failed.

Yeah, it was an internal thing meant to go to certain shareholders and it's just the one leak. The Snyder cut did okay in pure numbers, but didn't really draw any new subscribers, but a lot of people signed up and immediately watched Godzilla vs Kong. Velma came out like, years later so it wouldn't have been in the same leak.

By the way streaming services work, that means that the Snyder Cut didn't actually make any money but Godzilla vs Kong did.

Chances are they made something off the home video release of the Snyder cut, but it's in clearance prices right now, so I'm guessing it's not a huge cult classic thing with consistent sales.

To add about M84's point about Social Media being irrelevant. I shall remind you about that time Sony took the Morbius memes as proof it was a smash hit worthy of an encore and "obliged". Leaving them wide open for reality to clown on them.

Part of me suspects that what happened with Morbius's encore is that Sony was banking on the hope that they could squeeze money out of Bile Fascination.

In regards to social media being irrelevant, wasn't it the outcry from social media that caused Paramount to redesign Sonic the Hedgehog in the first place?

So what? I doubt most people actually gave a crap about the character design or thought it was THAT bad besides the people making vids or tweets about it.

It is kind of rare for movie executives to actually pay attention to uproars on social media.

But it's common for social media users to want to believe they have influence.

[up] Agree. Like, unless the social media users actually worked on the films themselves, then they don't really have that much power over what the Hollywood executives want to do with the films.

This just reinforces the point I was making earlier. The social media outcry over Coyote vs. Acme isn't reflective of some huge demand from global audiences for this movie to be released. Certainly not enough to convince WBD executives that they could make way more money by releasing and distributing it to theaters (which means even more money sunk into it) than simply shelving it for a possible tax write off.

The more I think about it, the more I think the decision to shelve this has more to do with John Cena's recent track record of movies. All of his most recent movies flopped. The WBD executives might have gotten nervous and worried that Cena's not as much of a draw these days.

And let's face it, the Looney Tunes movies so far depend heavily on the star power of their live action lead actors. The first Space Jam succeeded largely because of Michael Jordan. It cannot be understated just how huge the guy was back when the movie was released.

But, Looney Tunes: Back in Action didn't really do well, despite the fact that Brendan Fraser was in the lead role and he was a big actor back then.

No he wasn't. His star power was fading at that point in 2003.

My memory tells me sorta. They were expecting the general gaming community to not really be down on the design, but also figured it would be a Vocal Minority. Which, well, they were.

But the initial Sonic design wasn't doing hot with general audiences either, and that was what actually mattered. The vocal backlash actually didn't change anything, because it was the quiet dislike that motivated them to delay the film for a redesign.

Yeah, the trailer got a wide release and in early reaction surveys, the overwhelming reaction was basically "wow, the blue thing is really ugly". And people were citing it as a reason to not bother seeing the movie.

He does. His name is Daniel Richtman, he has a Twitter and a patron account and I’m trying to get a handle on how trustworthy he is before I share his latest claim.

Bumping with a story. Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein had his conviction overturned and now they are deciding whether or not to retry him. The source is New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/04/25/nyregion/harvey-weinstein-appeal

If there’s a better thread than this, let me know. I’m putting this here because this was what started the Me Too movement in the film industry.

Legal Commentator Emily D Baker went over this today. Her POV is that if NY decides to go ahead with a re-trial the fact he's now convicted of the similar crimes in CA can be used against him, in the first time he had no Prior Convictions...now he does. This will have a HUGE effect on the re-trial and other evidence that wasn't able to be presented might be able to be submitted in a re-trial. Some people are predicting a possible plea deal to prevent a re-trial.

His conviction in CA is still standing so worst case is no retrial and he gets shipped to CA to serve out his 20+ year sentence there.
