I learned this today totally independently... Happy American Chess Day! Though since it is Swedish, perhaps July 20 (International Chess Day) would have been more apropos?[smile]

I don't really have any guesses for the occasion behind today's trope. All I can comment is that Malaysia's Independence Day was on 31st August (2 days ago), and while that could be inherently related to a Peace Conference, I highly doubt that's the occasion behind it

Synch correctly guessed that Chess with Death was due to American Chess day. We have plenty of Chess tropes, so it doesn't hurt to reference multiple ones. I forget what was there for July 20.

Ah - the image on Chess with Death is from a famous Swedish film, The Seventh Seal. The creator was inspired by a painting he saw in a church in Stockholm
. While the trope is broader than the name, I was referring to that specific motif.
Is today's (Sept 2) Japan's WWII surrender?

Should this really be in Yack Fest? It's wiki-related and putting it here kinda makes it less noticeable.
If you want a featured trope, it's Paramedics Day in Poland tomorrow apparently. Or it's the 100th anniversary of the Treaty of Kars, so just put something related to Turkey or Soviet Russia.

Tomorrow's the day "Sixteen of the 18 crew of the Norwegian cargo ship Alf died when the ship foundered in the North Sea off of the coast of England near Lowestoft, Suffolk" according to Wikipedia, so maybe write about something from ALF... Amusing Alien, perhaps? (though I do see a bit of irony)

Broke Episode is still up there after a few days. Today's the 100th anniversary Margaret Sanger gave a speech about contraceptives, so maybe But We Used a Condom!. Tomorrow's the 100th anniversary of the attempt to destroy Blessed Virgin Mary's image with a bomb, make it A Saint Named Mary then? I'll leave the day after tomorrow to someone else.

Yeah, I got too busy to try throwing anything up. However, there should be a new trope up there now, and I've got the queue set up until the first week of January. I will hopefully be able to add the rest of January during the end-of-year holidays.

This thread is for the discussion of the Featured Trope on the Homepage

Many of the tropes highlighted there are obscure (must have less than 10,000 wicks, preferably less than 1,000), but generally have an image, a good description, and hopefully very little problems with example context or indentation. ~crazysamaritan has been generally keeping it populated, and usually trying to connect the Featured Trope with a celebration from various calenders.
You can suggest tropes to be added to the list, use this to guess why today's article is being featured, or remind the moderators when a day repeats (generally means that the list ran out and more tropes need to be added). There was some interest expressed in the moderation discussion thread, so here's your chance to make your predictions and find those obscure connections.
