Cleanup Thread: Character Specific Pages

Go To

Character-Specific Pages (CSPs) are created when individual characters have so many trope examples that they can't reasonably be included on a shared page.

The Administrivia Character-Specific Pages policy details the rules that apply to these pages. All Character-Specific Pages must also follow the basic How to Create a Character Page policy, as well as the wiki's more general policies about spoilers and examples.

This cleanup thread handles the following tasks:

  • Reviewing and approving new CSP proposals. All new potential CSPs must be reviewed and, if necessary, cleaned up before they're created.
  • Agreeing on page names for new CSPs.
  • Ensuring that wicks are updated when a new CSP is created.
  • Reviewing existing CSPs if there's a concern that they need cleanup, or if it's believed that the character may no longer qualify for a page.
  • Merging existing CSPs into other character pages when necessary.
  • Ensuring that wicks are updated when a CSP is removed/merged.
  • Creating, updating and cutting redirects, as necessary, to reflect these splits and merges.

Crowners are not normally required but, where appropriate, can be used to formalise decisions on any of these points.

If a character no longer qualifies for a CSP, it's often more practical to turn the CSP into a redirect than to cut the page entirely. This keeps the page history visible to users, and also helps to steer offsite 'inbound' traffic (search engine results) to the right place. With that in mind, cut requests for CSPs may be declined and referred to this thread if they don't have a clear consensus.

Comments linking back to this thread can be added to CSPs when needed - e.g. to confirm their creation was approved, to warn tropers that a cleanup is in progress, or to note the date and outcome of a more recent review.

We also have some more general threads for character page help - If these issues are spotted for a CSP, they are on-topic here as well — but as they're not the focus of this thread, you might sometimes choose to raise them on one of the others instead.
This is not a policy discussion thread, it's a cleanup thread — any requests for policy changes need to be raised in Wiki Talk.
Mod update 07 Mar 2024, reflecting new CSP policy, updated again 22 Mar 2024 to mention redirects for removed CSPs
    Text of original pinned post
There are several persistent issues with the quality of Character Specific Pages. Now that there are official requirements for creating new pages, this thread can be hub for cleaning up pages with issues or that don't qualify. The requirements settled on are as follows, and its recommended that a page meet two or more to stand on its own:

  1. Other options must have been tried first, like splitting pages into further groups.
  2. The character's folder is cleaned up beforehand, fixing any Zero-Context Examples and Wall of Text entries and removing any outdated, misused, or non-character tropes.
  3. A character's folder is at least 6,000 words/40,000 characters (with spaces). Here is a byte counter.note
  4. The current character page bypasses technical limitations and requires a split up.
  5. A single character takes up the majority of a page or is disproportionately bigger than other folders.

Splitting a character into their own page is a major change and needs to be run by the community before it is enacted. Even if you believe a character meets these requirements, they should be run through this thread first. Having other tropers take a look can help spot issues you may not notice or believe to be issues.

Per How to Create a Character Page, character-specific pages should only include tropes that describe the character. These tropes should fall under Characterization Tropes or one of its related indexes, unless they're recurring character traits (distinctive things that the character does repeatedly). If you're unsure what counts as a character trope, you can ask the Are these Character Tropes? thread.

If you have concerns with a general character page, they have their own separate cleanup thread, as do the self-demonstrating character pages.

Looked at the MLP:FIM pages and this is what I found.

  • Twilight Sparkle: 290,746 bytes (no dice)
  • Fluttershy: 72,618 bytes
  • Rarity: 65,696 bytes
  • Applejack: 44,881 bytes
  • Rainbow Dash: 79,719 bytes
  • Pinkie Pie: 80,345 bytes
  • Spike: 87,321 bytes
  • Starlight Glimmer 123,338 bytes

This one is gonna be tricky since there is no dedicated page to the Mane 6 as a whole, as that is put in "The Main Cast" page. A page like that can be made, but then we're left with what to do with Starlight and Spike. Any suggestions?

  • The Princesses 54,177 bytes
    • Celestia: 53,650 bytes
    • Luna: 42,200 bytes

Both can be merged.

  • Major Antagonists: 47,734 bytes
    • Chrysalis: 77,893 bytes
    • Lord Sombra: 58,827 bytes
    • Tirek: 46,840 bytes
    • Cozy Glow: 58,594 bytes

All except Chrysalis can be merged.

  • Redeemed Antagonists: 173,610 bytes
    • Discord: 171,068 bytes

He would be half the page. He can stay.

Thoughts?

[up]Keep the Mane 6, Spike and Starlight pages intact for now. [tup] for merging both Celestia and Luna; [tup] for merging the Villains except Chrysalis; And keep Discord intact too.

Don't forget the redirects too.

Ah, okay. Do we wanna have that in the pinned post somewhere?

EDIT: Okay, Buffyverse:

MAYBES:

I THINK everything else is PROBABLY good. I'm fine leaving the "other characters" for each separate. Buffyverse: Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Vampires & Buffyverse: Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Demons and Monsters combined are close enough to 250k that they can stay.

[up] Iโ€™d say Wesley can stay as if he were absorbed the Angel investigation page would be too close to the 300K mark.

Wesley 144K + Angel investigations 146K equal to 290K.

[up][up]As the franchise that literally started the site, I'd image alot of the CSP's are really large. I'd say keep all the CSP's, but the other mergers seem good to go.

It's gonna be fun on the bun!

[up][up][up]I think there's a typo in ACW's post, Wesley's page is only 44k. Don't think they'd have suggested a merge if adding them together would actually come out to 290k, considering the threshold is 250k.

"It was because the main characters page was small enough that it could take someone back in, and it made more sense to put Jamie back because Laurie's page covers multiple versions of her. Because it covers multiple iterations of the same character, it makes sense for Laurie's page to stay if one of them has to go."

The Laurie article features three versions of the character, none of whom have 40,000 bytes worth of material by themselves. Jamie's article was bigger than all of them combined, and still was merged back regardless. "if one of them has to go"? When was that decided? They were both up for over a year and then all of a sudden they weren't good enough anymore?

"I would put Laurie, Loomis and Jamie together in a recurring page and merge back the other two timelines for the first two back to their respective pages. Like its not like say the 2007 or 2018 pages are that big either. The only one who should have a page in my opinion is Micheal and that is just due to sheer size."

If a merge had to take place, I certainly would be less bothered by Tina, Rachel, and the various versions of Laurie being merged back into their respective pages because they were smaller than Original Timeline Loomis or Jamie (which combined are over 100,000 bytes.) As for the recurring page proposal, why would Rachel not be included if she was in two films? The Michael argument is meh to me because the original one is not that long and the remake version is small.

All in all, I feel like I've been slapped in the face. I followed the rules every time I made a character page, all of them were kept for over a year, and now it's merge/delete time? My favorite part is that I wasn't even asked to participate in this supposed "discussion", as though I was expected to just say nothing as my work was undone. I don't even want to use this site anymore. It's literally Wikipedia all over again.

[up][up] And why are you calling moving characters to another place "undoing your work"? I think it's a good thing to make page-top indexes as small as possible.

[up][up][up]I can see why you're upset; I'm not terribly fond of the new rules either, but...

For Buffyverse, proposed formatting:
  • For Willow, considering she also has Vampire Willow, AND considering the main Scooby page with her is 241k+ characters, I actually think she can stay.
  • Faith and Wesley, though, can be merged. And fairly easily.
  • For the LA Residents, just replace the !stuff with !!stuff and have !Recurring and !One-Shot
  • For Sunnydale, just make a !Sunnydale High section and move every section on the latter page from ! to !!. I'm also thinking having that at the top of the Residents page.
  • For Angel Big Bads, we CAN merge Wolfram & Hart, but the formatting will need to be modified.

Thoughts? That'll reduce the number of pages by 5 (or 6 if we do merge Willow).

Moving character folders around takes less than a minute and no content is lost, I don't see the reason to be worked up about it.

Halloween: Laurie Strode and Halloween: Samuel Loomis have multiple subfolders, so merging them to Halloween instead of Jamie Lloyd sounds more difficult, so that is likely the logic.

A better idea to me would be splitting the iterations of Halloween: Laurie Strode and Halloween: Samuel Loomis into Halloween, Halloween (2007) and Halloween (2018) respectively if both are treated as three separate characters.

[up]For me, the moves themselves are easy; it's the page-top indices and making sure they're removed from the CSP listing and bytecounts that are the pain (especially the page-top stuff; for Halloween it's not too bad, but for works like Buffyverse or Ace Attorney...).

Halloween is known for its strange and complicated continuity so it's not an easy matter. In general, Characters.Halloween needs more organized sorting to account for different continuities/reboots/etc., so I suggest creating a thread for this on Projects: Short Term

[up][up] I think Danganronpa is worse in that regard, as commented here. The CSPs except Celestia, Miu and Kochiki all have a general tropes folder and then subfolders from each of the games. And some of them like Toko are included with alterate personalities.รง

Stalker Gamer and I haven't reached a decision yet, what should we do?

Regarding Danganronpa, except Toko/Jill I don't see the point of subsplitting if they are the same character. Merging folders would involve massive rewriting though.

[up][up]Most of them are listed in the list under Monikers and Legacy Characters (Makoto, Byakuya, Monokuma, Kyoko, Nagito and Peko) so "same character" might not be accurate, but I haven't played any of the games. Others, including Toko, Junko and Hajime, are under Character Focused Page because of their alter-egos/alternate personalities.

For everyone except Monokuma I can't say I understand what they are doing there.

Still, it may worth going to own thread.
