So I’m working on a Sword & Planet setting heavily influenced by the John Carter/Barsoom series (minus, of course, Mighty Whitey being transported to the planet via Plot Device).

A lot of the melee weapons are virtually identical to their Earth equivalents, with minor design changes. Would it be easier to simply refer to them by their regular Earth names (cavalry saber, tachi, war axe, morning star, etc.) than to come up with original names?

You have just enough energy to climb this hill, but not enough energy to go on or look for someplace else to camp.

It's easy, certainly, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the best option. It does have the advantage of clarity, but in return, you lose the ability to make your armoury feel like part of an alien world.

My suggestion would be to take some of the weapons and tie them to specific cultures. Not all of them - straightforward stuff can still keep its name - but tie a few of them to the world you're setting it on, and maybe invent a couple of new, unusual ones that feel like the invention of an alien culture.

Like, spears aren't special. Everyone calls them spears. But maybe the Harkennian nomads on their lizard steeds, or whatever, make the heaviest use of sabres, so there isn't a cavalry sabre - there's a Harkennian sabre. It's still pretty clear what it is and it's not hard to figure out how it works, but now it reinforces that this isn't just, like, the Reconstruction-era US, it's a different world.

Anyway, that's my thought.
