Your personal cases of Viewer Gender Confusion

Another one that I remembered, I thought Riptor from Killer Instinct was male.

One of my family's friends was convinced that Baljeet from Phineas and Ferb was a girl, and I'm pretty sure I believed that for some period of time as well. Maybe it's because he has a relatively high-pitched voice?

I initially thought Pave from Animal Crossing was a girl because of his feminine behavior and voice (he sounds like a Peppy villager) until I looked at the wiki. I can't be the only one who's made this mistake.

I thought until literally just now that Rinoa's dog Angelo from Final Fantasy VIII was a boy. Turns out that it's a girl despite the name.

I thought Fidgel from 3-2-1 Penguins! was a girl when I was younger. Possibly because of the "hair" and, if I remember correctly, he had a rather androgynous-sounding voice.

The first time I saw a photo of the characters from My Dad the Rock Star (this was before I saw the show) I thought Willy was a girl. To be fair, he is voiced by a girl and has a pretty androgynous design (he kind of looks like Pepper Ann with shorter hair) so I could see someone who's never watched the show before making that mistake.

For a very long time, I thought Eddy from Duolingo was a woman. This was until Characters.Duolingo was made. (In my defense, I didn't know any of the characters' names aside from Duo.)

a back and forth case with Rin Penrose

i thought they were a woman at first, then found out they were a man, and THEN i heard they were a woman again

I thought that Tate from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire was a girl until I did further research online.

I thought that Mowgli was a girl because he has long hair. It got cleared up pretty quickly considering he's a man cub and all.

I think “man cub” means a human baby in general, since the animals in that movie refer to humans in general as “man”. Kinda like in Bambi.

When I first saw Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl, I thought Dawn’s Piplup was a girl due to his voice and feminine behavior. It wasn’t until several years later that I found out the truth.

I remember thinking Eddy was supposed to be seen as having an Ambiguous Gender when Duolingo first introduced the characters. The fact that one of the first sentences said by Eddy that I was supposed to translate was "I am a woman" didn't clear things up.

Oddly, my mom briefly had a case of Viewer Species Confusion when it came to Eddy's son, Junior - she thought he was a cat. (In her defense, she wasn't looking at him clearly.)

I used to think Ten Count from Battle Arena Toshinden 3 was a woman.

Tierra Erde from Gundam 00. The one scene where he was in disguise as a woman and had a different voice actor was confusing. I thought it was an entirely different character.

So did everyone. Though an episode that showed his future self did give him a manly voice.

I mistook Maxie from the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire remake for an old lady at first due to his face and hairstyle.

i thought that kirby and charmy bee were females

i nearly thought that terezi pyrope was a dude. nearly.

i thought that fin (first profile picture in gallery) was a feminine dude because she possesses male betta fish traits. apparently she's a female (because beika called her female), but i still have a very slight feeling that she is indeed a feminine dude, and beika was mistaken

Recently found out Riley Freeman is a boy.

For the longest time, I thought Loko was a girl. I only found out he wasn't because I read his character page on this very wiki.

Early in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, I thought Perrito was a girl until later in the film

i thought kel and basil were girls at first

I thought Gladekeeper from Flight Rising was male when I was new to the game, mainly because of her beard and because the deities are designed in a fairly gender-neutral way to begin with.

i've mistaken Gatekeeper and Mouthpiece for guys. granted, they have masculine cog builds, but still

there's also Deep Diver who's from the same game as them, but it was more of her soundbytes sounding masc rather than her appearance

Not me, but a buddy of mine mistook Bluey and Bingo for guys. He ain't the only one.
