Characters/Rugrats and search engines

Alphabetization is good, but the issue is that it's not a rule; it's not compulsory. It's always preferable, but...IDK. We should try to do it as much as possible, but shouldn't go out of our way when there's bigger issues to fix.

I personally think we should make a poll for readers about page problems (lack of/mis-alphabetisation, lack of example context, grammar problems, typos, subpage collisions, speculative work pages, low-quality images, all-blue entries, etc.) and let them answer with what they think is the most dealbreaking and what they don't really care about at all. We'd at least know what to focus on in the future and what is something not to worry about. Maybe when we reach 500000 articles, we could start the poll? Still, this thread's job is improving stuff for readers with what we can do at the moment.

How would that poll even work? It's a good idea, but how would it be executed, and how would you know it's not biased editors voting?

Well, there could be an option for answering if you're a reader or an editor. Assuming polling websites that synergise entries (as in, shows "40% who picked this option are readers, 59% are editors, 1% said other") exist, we'd discredit votes by "editor" or "other", or assume their opinions aren't as important for what actually matters for the readers. However, people can lie about what group they fit, the amount of editors voting may outnumber the amount of readers voting (or vice versa), and other problems may show up. Maybe devs could make the poll and not allow people who have accounts to access them to take part, but that can always be fixed by logging out, and they don't work all the time on what we want (same if we had a password only visible for unregistered users). I'd need to think a while on a foolproof idea, and luckily, there are 29000 articles left before the milestone.

Still, I'll keep working on alphabetisation, and maybe finding pics for characters without them (I'm workin' on it, even if I currently have two).

Also, Characters.Rugrats had a ZCE of Fat and Skinny added to two characters yesterday. That page is a double ZCE magnet for characters pages. It itself is a ZCE magnet.

Well, I wanted to hide ZCEs on Characters.Rugrats, though you didn't answer my test if the three examples I mentioned count as them. You know, I just wanted to see if I'm capable, but if you want to take care of that yourself, go ahead.

Keep working on what you feel suits you best, guys and gals. I've realised ZCE hiding is also useful, as I've just alphabetised and hidden those on Bald Of Awesome. There were many of them.

Next page for me, Forgotten First Meeting (it's in Grandpa Lou Pickles's folder, I guess I'm just doing the folder). I've realised that cleanup might be going slowly because you're not sure what page to tackle. Here's my ideas:

• War Jay 77 currently wants to clean Characters.Rugrats itself and is busy IRL. Well, I can understand that. Take your time and work once you're free.
• ~𝕋𝕒𝕓𝕤: Since you start from bottom folders, how about Security Blanket (Cynthia's folder)?
• ~Brainulator9: Since you're new to this thread, how about Troublemaking New Pet (Spiffy's folder)? That page seems very easy and short.

By the way, I've come up with a way to extend our cleanup horizons that doesn't add too much scope either. How about also cleaning the first link from previous or next from each index from a trope that Characters.Rugrats links to? For example, Beary Friendly's index points to Bambification, Beary Funny, Bears Are Bad News, Bare-Handed Blade Block, Beat Bag, All-Loving Hero, Beauty Equals Goodness, and Stock Beehive. All of these tropes can now be part of cleanup, as long as an editor mentions it ("I'm cleaning up Stock Beehive, which is a Next on the ImageSource.Disney Animated Canon index for Beary Friendly, which is an example in The Dummi Bears' folder.") War Jay 77, as you want to build a more satisfying chain of pages, what do you think of this scope expansion idea? I think it'll cover a fair range of pages while not being excessive.

Characters.Rugrats had examples of Sad Clown and Non-Ironic Clown added today. Eh, they seem okay. Deadpan Fly 2 seems trustworthy.

We're now at #4937. Ack.

And as for the character page thing, I'd like to do it myself just because I'm a lot more experienced doing work pages than trope pages and won't get distracted with concerns about TRS-worthy misuse and stuff.

All assistance is welcome, but if you ever decide to alphabetise, consider Notepad++ as it's simple yet practical for TV Tropes cleanup.

~𝕋𝕒𝕓𝕤, you seem like you want to help, but hide ZCEs and alphabetise if I notify you and tell you what page to pick next. Is this an acceptable model (for me, it probably is)? Like, I'd just tell you "How about going after Creepy Doll, for instance, next."

~Brainulator9, I have given you a short and simple page, but again received nothing. Are you currently too busy or just uninterested? I'll give up on trying to reason with you and just summon someone else if I receive no response.

Alphabetised Grandparental Obliviousness. If I hadn't edited it it would go on my proposed untouched tropes list, which are tropes unedited for over a year. Well, it has 45 wicks at least.

Next page for me, Identical Grandson (Grandpa Lou Pickles's folder). It's a big one, I'm giving myself two weeks here at least, maybe I'll fix IdenticalGrandson.Live Action TV as well. Though I'm not sure if the page being split was necessary, the former weighs 270 KB while the latter weighs 203 KB, typical limit seems to be 520-540 KB (in terms of bytes, not raw html).

I guess they aren't, and I haven't been a deadline following person here either. I do hope that regular cleanup would eventually lead us to regaining search engine popularity, as it's currently on a decline (not the end of the world, but still worrying). Ah. I like the "pick the two tropes next to their pages in the index" idea, Piterpitcher, but I haven't... uh, done any yet. (I'm doing Conspicuous CG wick cleanup, so those are prioritized.) But I still have this thread on my mind.

I have a slightly exciting aside. For a reason unrelated to this thread, I searched for ghost leg on a handful of search engines. Ghost Leg Lottery is

• 5th result on Google
• 3rd result on DuckDuckGo
• 2nd result on Bing
• 3rd result on Dogpile
• 3rd result on Yippy
• 2nd result on Yahoo

So maybe TV Tropes traffic isn't nearly as high as its heyday, but we're still relevant, dammit!

Characters.Rugrats has only had a typo correction today.

I've alphabetised Identical Grandson and merged IdenticalGrandson.Live Action TV into it for now, as it clearly wasn't too long or didn't show the warning. Maybe later, it will be merged, but not now.

War Jay 77, you said that you're going to try to clean up Characters.Rugrats that night (in reply to my post). It did not happen, though I assume it's because of the CM thread ATT. That discussion seems like it was absorbing, so I understand. However, is there a date you're absolutely sure you're going to clean Characters.Rugrats ZCEs on? Alternatively, if you're unable to do it all in one go, clean up only one or a few section(s) (like the Kids folders, or the Pickles folders)?

𝕋𝕒𝕓𝕤, it's okay, take care of Conspicuous CG for now. I may message you if you seem less busy later. As for our relevancy in search engines, we may be relevant sometimes but not all the time. For example, I've searched for "lol 69" thinking I'd find my trope LOL, 69 in Bing, but it only showed on page 3 (and first result of page 4). Except that it wasn't even the trope, but its Laconic/ page. So it's tough to say whether we're still that important.

Also, we have dropped from the top 5000. We're now #5060. We can take solace in the fact that the total number of websites in the world is apparently 1747677000+, so we're still in the top 0.03‱ of websites (basis point, or 1/10000, not a percent). Well, every company has its major fall (remember Nintendo and the Wii U?), this is just our milestone fall.

Bambification and Beary Funny are adjacent to Beary Friendly in the Pleasant Animals Index. Done with those. The "Other uses" folder on Bambification should probably be cut. Examples are "deer are involved in various ways".

Since this is post 50 and I've seen a Youtuber celebrate reaching 50 subscribers (some channels and cleanup projects are just small and even small milestones can be celebrated), I think it's time for something special. Franchise.Rugrats was created three days ago by Pichu-kun and WesternAnimation.Rugrats Pre School Daze was created yesterday by From The Words Of BR, even if the latter page is currently anemic. I'll add an image to former shortly.

I'm summoning the former. Pichu-kun (had to send message manually), did you make the Franchise page because you are interested in this project, or did you just make it for no real reason other than it deserving a Franchise page? Would you be interested in joining the project? You can alphabetise, hide ZCEs, or do other improvements to tropes linked from Characters.Rugrats or tropes adjacent on indexes of tropes which are linked to from the characters page (it's a mouthful). This is part of the effort to improve TV Tropes and our position in search engines. What do you say, are you interested in joining the cleanup (yes or no)?
