Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgment - Violations, misuse, and other issues

Go To

The Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment exists to prevent tropers from making agenda-based edits or bringing up irrelevant controversial issues, but it's not always obvious if something breaks the rule or not. This thread serves the purposes of:

  • Getting consensus on cutting overly controversial edits.
  • Rewriting biased examples to be more neutral.
  • Pre-emptively clarifying if a possible example actually violates the rule, or if it's okay to add.
  • Making sure that the rule isn't just being used as an excuse to write a Zero-Context Example ("Some people think that X is Y, and that's all we have to say about it.")

See also the thread "Trump and ROCEJ" for the specific topic of tropers sneaking their political views (not just views regarding Donald Trump, despite the title) onto the wiki.

See Pages Attracting Edits That Promote Bigotry for pages that attract ROCEJ violations that are bigoted in nature.

Not only is it incredibly poor taste, but it doesn't seem to be widespread enough to count as a meme.

Is it just me, or is Analysis.Fan Hater a bit too flame bait-y? For context, it was created over a decade ago and has remained the same since, barring trope cleanup.

[up]I cut it because that sort of commentary on real life isn't necessary for a trope that's both IUEO and NRLEP.

A while ago I brought this What Could Have Been entry on Trivia.Saints Row 2022 up in the Fact Checking Thread and didn't remove it because it had a source attributed to it. However, I read the page again and fear it might be a giant ROCEJ violation.

  • According to an anonymous developer (who worked on the game) that was interviewed by ShortFatOtaku, the feature that allowed players to rob stores from previous Saints Row games, alongside XP and Money drops from killing NPCs, was programmed into the game but they were removed because the DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) group overseeing the game's development requested the features to be removed as they didn't want to upset BLM or encourage killing innocent pedestrians.

There's a few issues I can see. The mention of DEI (Which doesn't have any relevance to gaming, I believe) and BLM (Do BLM focus on games at all?), the allusion to the Sweet Baby Inc controversy (Did some research on them, they seem to focus solely on narrative development and probably wouldn't have any influence on civilians dropping money or XP or robbing buildings. Also, I looked at the game's credits here and seen no mention of Sweet Baby), and the linked Youtuber being someone whose content seems to be reactionary. Also, the game doesn't stop you from killing pedestrians, and there's several missions focused on robberies.

Any thoughts on the entry?

Yeah, definitely cut that entry. I'll admit to looking up the DEI thing myself albeit not in this specific context (as I've never heard of the term myself) - based on what I did find, it definitely reads like someone with an agenda.

I found in the real life section of the great wall:

In 2014 the new government of Ukraine started building a fence along the Russian border. Propaganda described it as a new Chinese wall to protect civilized Europe from hostile invaders (there is an ongoing war between the two nations after all). The plans were made for high-tech electrified fences, moats, cameras, drones, landmines... As of early 2021, about 40% of it had been built, although the construction has been marred with huge corruption scandals.

the example isn't wrong but maybe it should be edited to sound less inflammatory.

I'm a bit concerned about this example on Character Derailment possibly attempting to push an anti-transgender agenda about a canonically transfeminine character:

  • Guilty Gear -STRIVE-: After several years of absence, Bridget finally returns. But dropping the obvious part, they are hardly the same character anymore. In the past they used to be a playful, brave, goal oriented and capable youth who sought acceptance for who they truly were and whose cuteness was only a side effect of their usual behavior, to now having become sheepish, indecisive and even somewhat vain, excessively obsessing over their cute act and identity. Only the playful bit is the same. This is especially startling given that Vastedge, which is supposed to take place 5 months before Strive, showcases them as the fans remembered with no clear reason as to their drastic shift in personality in such a short amount of time.

There's so much I wish I could take back.

On Smiling Friends: Clients under President Jimble:

  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: He pretty much combines the worst qualities and accusations of presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
    • Like Trump, Jimble is a Fat Slob in an ill-fitting suit with ego-centered problems and selfish motivations, abused the "presidential alert" system, endorses a widely-condemned foreign dictator and is widely condemned by the international community and local media.
    • Like Joe Biden, Jimble is clueless, inept, and utterly incompetent at running the country, a former Vice President coasting on his predecessor's goodwill, constantly making verbal gaffes during the few moments that he's actually coherent when speaking, undermined by his health issues, under fire for supporting a foreign leader who's widely condemned by the international community while, at the other end, receiving extreme support from local media.

The entries on Smiling Friends S2E2 "Mr. President" are only slightly more measured:

  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • In addition to the Trumplica elements below, President Jimble also embodies criticisms and critical accusations of Joe Biden: he's a former Vice President who was only coasting on his predecessor's goodwill, he's widely derided as being clueless and inept, he constantly makes verbal gaffes, he's undermined by his health issues, he's under fire for supporting a foreign leader widely condemned by the international community, and the only reason he even comes close to winning is because he's being propped up by people who want to see Mr. Frog lose by any means necessary
  • Trumplica:
    • President Jimble is a Fat Slob who wears ill-fitting suits, is utterly incompetent at running the country, and endorses a widely-condemned foreign dictator.

I'm not sure how to rephrase this in a less inflammatory way. But as someone who saw the episode, the gag just mostly seemed like "what if Chris-Chan was president and we also threw in a few common criticisms of Trump & Biden for good measure so that we're not shown as supporting a specific side?". People have claimed the episode criticizes Biden's handling of Israel/Palestine (and it definitely seems that way with Jimble supporting a condemned leader and on the receiving end of massive protests), but given Production Lead Time, I think that's highly unlikely.

EDIT: Whoops, just remembered there's a specific thread for Trump/politics, not sure if I should move this there

This entry on CuteWitch.Video Games has this rather iffy line with possibly transphobic undertones:

  • Vivian the Shadow Siren from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, with her long, pink ringlets, dimples, and adorable smile, is often considered to be second only to Peach in terms of "cute" for the franchise. (And to some fans, even cuter.) And she's not only a witch (having dark, shadowy powers, along with a cool witch's hat), she's a downright powerful one, arguably becoming Mario's most powerful partner after joining his party with her offensive attacks and incredibly useful defensive Veil. (Although, she might only truly count in the English/German versions, anyway; she's cute in Japan too, but might not qualify as a witch in that version.)

The mention of not qualifying as a witch, as well as that She's a Man in Japan pothole, seems really off to me. Thoughts?

I guess IDK anything about the character so did the character's gender change between releases? Like... is she a man in Japan?

Because historically speaking, "Witch" did only apply to women; men were never called witches. IDK if that matters for the Cute Witch trope, but it's just the origin of the word.

[up] In the Japanese version and some European versions, it's made clear that Vivian is transgender - this was removed in the original English version but restored in the remake. (More info here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivian_(Paper_Mario))

[up][up] I'd take that line out entirely.

I'm wondering, should the Daily Wire have a Creator page? As we can see, they do have shows that have tropes on them on their subscription model, even if they aren't very good, like Chip Chilla and Mr. Birchum. Just don't trope the talk show hosts that are the faces of the platform. Of course, I'd understand if we don't want to go that route since the Daily Wire is a conservative platform, and we all know how touchy politics are.
