They really went hard into the whole dark and grim aesthetic in the later movies huh.

Half Blood Prince was a pretty ugly movie as a result.

[up]There was no need for the lighting to be that dark.

A lot of promise with the FB movies and while I liked the second one, that was indeed the beginning of the end right there.

The most colorful scene in the Fantastic Beasts movies is when we go inside Newts case for the first time and see all the environments he got set up in there.

HP was always urban fantasy at it's heart but these movies had a opportunity to take us beyond what we've seen before and to some wild and colorful places.

We coulda gone out on a desert adventure or mess around underwater and run into Cthulhu or something. But nah we just get to go through city streets all the time.

Yeah, FB is at its best when it embraces the fantastical adventure side of the setting, but then it keeps cutting back to these boring lame suit wearing wizards looking serious.

It wants to be darker and more mature than it really is.

No more is this apparent than the plot line about the rigged election. It really doesn’t know how to handle a topic like it but tries anyway and ends up looking stupid.

I never had an issue with the whole wizards wearing muggle clothing, I know they wear weird stuff in the books but I like the whole hidden in plain sight ordeal they got going on.

Yeah, that election plot was dumb. They made a magical creature important to the plot but not in a fun way or all that interesting way.

Fantastic Beasts would have been a perfect franchise to bring up and discuss issues like the illegal wildlife trade and other environmental issues. But instead they decided to talk about the same shit they did in OG Potter except in more convoluted and poorly written way.

They are still wearing boring business suits even in places where it's just Wizards, like Hogwarts.

It truly boggles the mind that they had Dumbledore dress like a normal member of society. [lol]

As for the election plot, there's a wasted opportunity to really explore the setting through it's politics, and take a look at the systemic problems they have. But nope!

Hell, the wizarding world was fully and ready to vote for Grindy on the assumption that he was pure of heart, and were therefore on board with the plan to declare war on muggles.

They only rescinded because Grindy faked the Qilin bowing before him, but that doesn't change the fact they were buying what he was selling.

Dumbledore dressing like a normal muggle is strange because, in book 6 of the main series, when he went to Tom Riddle's orphanage, he was wearing a "flamboyant cut suit of plum velvet" that drew the attention of Muggles, and even Harry mocked it.

Oh well, it is not the first or worst retcon FB does.

Yeah. With both the HP books and movies, there was a lot of focus on the world itself rather than just the overarching situation with Voldemort. The two serviced each other way better. That clearly wasn't the case here though.
