I'm really just here to vent. Last week, my favorite radio station that once played songs from the 70s and 80s was abruptly discontinued and replaced with another station that played only country music. I'm fine with country, but my city already has three other country stations, yet barely any station here nowadays plays rock (with the exception of "Oldies," but that focuses primarily on early 20th-century music).

A lot of people reasonably complain that stations are playing the same songs over and over, but is anyone else thinking that radio in general is too focused on pop, rap, and country more than anything else? I'm dying to have a mix station set up somewhere around here.

You guys have an early-20th-century station? Swing, doo-wop, and big jazz vocalists? Can I have it?

[up]It's kinda strange how the music they play aren't the remastered editions. The station has a lot of intentional static to drive the point that they're "old". I kinda like it, but I'm fairly sure it's not going to last very long.

But since last year, a new station has shown up. It's GUESS FM, which plays a mix from the 20th-century, so that's pretty close.

I know this is an older post, but I have to concur that most radio stations are losing variety. They are owned by like a handful of companies.

I switched to an independent radio station. KDHX.org has TONS of variety! And you can stream their station online, so if you're not in the St. Louis area, you can still catch it.

There's a lot of blues shows, but throughout the week there is a different 2 hour block show every day. With real D Js, and it's all volunteer, so you get very few commercials (almost like an NPR announcement.)

If you're looking for variety, go there. I can't stand how you hear the same stupid songs over and over on regular radio. I know they like promote new music, but when they play same old songs, you know it's just create a comfortable repetition :/

For classic rock, my favorite show is The Other One with Drea. For just random weird rock, punk, garage, rockabilly I like The Greaser's Lunch Box and Afternoon Delight (one's on Thursday, the other Friday. But you can hear the shows for up to I think two weeks after they air, and they have a song list.)
