And there is a side story in Preacher about horse thiefs who sell them to restaurants.Their leader being a stereotypical Frenchman named Napoleon. It was very graphical, btw.
I'm not the nicest bloke you've ever met, but I do me best.I accidentally stumbled upon Crossed recently. Yeah....that was rather unsettling for someone who had no clue what the context behind what he was looking at.
Ennis created the series, but is only the third most prominent writer after Lapham and Spurrier. His stories are also among the tamest, relatively speaking.
Kieron Gillen (who wrote an arc) just started a Crossed-over with his sci-fi police drama(?) series Mercury Heat. Kind of random.
Outside of maybe Hellblazer: Son of Man, Crossed is probably his craziest work.YMMV which is worst.Probably still Crossed.
I'm not the nicest bloke you've ever met, but I do me best. What does Hellblazer do? I saw a few rather....disturbing covers for the Crossed Comics. Usually involving kids. One of them was Crossed kids enacting a medieval torture technique on some poor female survivor. The other involved Crossed kids, a slide, and a woodchipper....
....Really disturbing really and I don't say that very often.
Son of man has a demon named Fuckpig.Cant top that.
I'm not the nicest bloke you've ever met, but I do me best.Yeah that's a little out there.
....Maybe a lot out there.
His first run, from Dangerous habits till Paul Jenkins took over, was GREAT.His return in Son of Man is basicly a self parody.
I'm not the nicest bloke you've ever met, but I do me best. What's wrong with horse-eating? Horse meat is delicious!
Reading Preacher. The Klan try to scare Custer by burning corss. Custer puts it out with piss. I am won.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Yeah, Son of Man is dreck. Awful, offensive for the sake of it and devoid of any merit whatsoever.
I actually ended up really enjoying Caliban, too, which had pretty top-notch Sci i horror and a lesbian heroine who's...actually really well done. If only Bury Your Gays wasn't a thing here.
Red-Team is pretty good. And I quite liked Streets of Glory as well, which tops Crossed any day of the year.
Just read Crossed: Gore Angels. You know, the stuff not written by Ennis.
It's interesting how malleable the Crossed setting is. A rape and revenge story wasn't something I expected to read in this universe... well, at least not the way this one played out.
I don't like to use the phrase "grimdark" or "too edgy" but this one was... probably the most visually unsettling comic book I've legally read. This is joining the Human Centipede films on my "Do Not Revisit Unless There Is A Gun Pointed To My Head" list.
I am curious about Crossed Plus 100 though, and whether or not this is ever going to get a live-action somewhere down the line.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I just read Punisher: The Platoon. It's an excellent little war story that shows things from both sides of the conflict. It's also an interesting look at a young Frank, and shows the aspects of his personality that got amped up considerably after he became the Punisher. Definitely a recommended comic.
I wonder if there's a character in an Ennis book that actively avoids swearing when everyone else cusses like a sailor. Or a character that acts so genuinely dignified, not crass at all that it comes off as funny he's the only one who does so in Ennis' crudeness-loving stories
Hoover from Preacher doesn't swear at all, and acts all shocked when Featherstone says motherfucker. "It's just a fucking word, Hoover!"
I really like Hitman.
I stopped reading Preacher when I got to the part where Jesse Custer talked about how he was a good person for not using his mind control powers to rape his girlfriend.
You think Ennis has difficulties with straight-up good characters...except Superman
I think he is kind of a mixed bag. When he gets good, he gets VERY good, and when he gets bad, he gets VERY bad. Which is a sad thing, because the man is very intelligent and has been able to give some pretty good social commentary through his stories numerous times. Dunno why he often loses himself in senseless gore and annoying stereotypes.

Any time that Garth Ennis has tried his hands at Playing Against Type in his writing?

I think he definitely overplays the dark comedy at times. His original Fury MAX comic had a very good story with things to say, but it also had annoying characters like Wendell who were just there to be dumb and have bad things happen to them. And his Marvel Knights Punisher run overdid the joke with Soap to the point it was more eye rolling than funny.
Barracuda comes off to me as the living embodiment of things Ennis finds too fun for his own good writing. That is being crude, Laughably Evil and utterly psychopathic. And while I feel he abuses the Complete Monster trope, Barracuda is one Ennis example that works because he acts like the Joker if he was a veteran and gangster rather than a Serial Killer

New series announced - Get Fury
it's Marvel MAX series from Crossed creators, Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows that has Frank Castle hunting down Nick Fury after he is captured by the Vietcong.
Finally. I first heard this mentioned years ago.
He is also having a humorous Sword and Sorcery series published under Ahoy Comics called Babs published at the same time
There was that one Punisher arc where a French soldier kept being demeaned by everyone despite being an all-around normal and pleasant enough dude who at one point bemoans how he and France are shat on everywhere he goes (with their being one or two horse-eating references).
In the end, he and his men all receive promotions (him to general) after Frank gives him a tip regarding how he can use the nuking of Grand Nixon Island to his advantage.
