We aren't lawyers here, but we would like to remind you that if you plan to publish something for pay somewhere, you probably shouldn't post it on TV Tropes. That includes the wiki, forums, liveblogs, reviews, or anywhere else in tvtropes.org. You shouldn't expect to be able to claim attribution of your material, delete it or have it deleted by us, or exercise certain other rights. Remember that anything you post on the Internet is there forever.

Licensing

TV Tropes licenses anything you contribute to the wiki from you non-exclusively note , permanently note , and irrevocably note . It may be your writing, but you have no say in what we do with it once it's on our site. If you post your original work here, we could use it without your permission unless you get a written agreement first.

Note: A wiki article about your work is not the same thing as your work.

Prior publication

If you want your material published, a publisher may ask you if you've previously published it anywhere else. A site like ours may be considered "prior publication" and get your work rejected. This has nothing to do with licensing or copyright; publishers want exclusivity or they risk their profits.

How to keep control of your work

  • Don't post it, link to it.
  • If you must post it, use minor excerpts only.
  • Consider keeping the whole thing offline or in a secure repository like Google Drive, rather than on a public site like fanfiction.net.

For more information, see the "Your Rights" section of Welcome to TV Tropes and our Creative Commons license, linked at the bottom of every page. You can also find some helpful information about your publication rights in this blog post on writersrelief.com.

Note: We won't be jerks about this. We just don't want there to be any misunderstandings.
