Well I hope it certainly isn't the latter.
News update second post. It's been confirmed that this morning's crash has cost at least seven fatalities and numerous injuries.

"Seven people have died and dozens more have been injured after a tram overturned in London, police have said.
The driver, 42 from Beckenham, has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
People were trapped inside and more than 50 were taken to hospital after the derailment in Croydon just after 06:00 GMT.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said the tram was travelling at a "significantly higher speed than is permitted"."
Thoughts are with the families.

So it was a case of "overspeed into the junction"?
"Yup. That tasted purple."Yeah, that's what the British Transport Police seem to be going with and is why they're charging the driver with manslaughter.
This isn't going to end well.
National ATP when?
"Yup. That tasted purple."Your guess is probably better than mine at this point.
I mean I can't think of any other way to reliably stop overspeeds like this.
"Yup. That tasted purple."The other day, I was down at the railyard, and I noticed quite a bit of coal scattered around among the gravel. This was left over from the summer, when they were using a borrowed steam locomotive. So I gathered up about five pounds of it in a plastic shopping bag. I intend to mail a Christmas stocking filled with coal to a certain person who shall remain nameless.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank. So I realize that not only has this thread been dead for months but none of you probably care about American trains but I've recently started a separate youtube channel to put all of my railfanning stuff on and I have to make sure someone sees it.

It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference....I seem to have just described the linkage on an A4 as "metal sex".
What the hell is wrong with me? Especially as a fan of Southern locos over LNER ones.
"Yup. That tasted purple."So had my first encounter with the new LNWR livery in the wild on a 350.
Also it seems that the new compact HST rakes are being reclassified back to being multiple units (Class 255), and GWR is even resurrecting the Castle names for them.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Today is the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Pottstown station on the Colebrookdale Railroad line. When completed, the new station-house will be a welcome addition to Memorial Park.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Meanwhile it seems like work is beginning in earnest for the Birmingham spur of HS 2. A lot of prep work going on around here.
"Yup. That tasted purple."It's the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad and I'd like to head up to the Golden Spike National Historic Park again to see it.
Sculpture of whale's tail saves train from plummeting 30 feet off railway platform. The train was empty, though.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThere's certainly no other train that sounds like our class 363. .
Also if you notice the signal lights, it displays speed limit 40kph and expect 40 kph at next signal post before briefly switching to green (free) and then red.

Humankind is like a train. No matter how powerful the locomotive is, it can only travel as fast as its slowest car allows it to.Mega bump!
Swiss Claim Record for World's Longest Passenger Train, almost 2km. And on an UNESCO heritage railway line (the Albula line), no less.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI've been wondering... do the Japanese railways operate separate lines for freight and passenger transport? Because I've never actually seen a freight train pass a station platform in Japan, while in most countries operatin railways it is a fairly common occurence.
Humankind is like a train. No matter how powerful the locomotive is, it can only travel as fast as its slowest car allows it to.It helps that rail freight is apparently pretty rare in Japan full stop - less than 5% of total freight movements I believe.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Favorite train: LMS Patriot Class/N&W J Class Why those? One, they're big engines and I love big engines, two, my username is the second one. As for freight traffic in Japan, the thing is that it's mostly passenger trains now, isn't it?

I mean the only other ideas I can think of are track failure, line obstruction or wheelset failure.
Assuming we're ruling out foul play anyway.
