Webcomic virus alerts

Go To

I figured we probably need a stickied thread like this, for the safety of everyone.

This thread is for alerting all webcomic readers when specific webcomic sites are infected with viruses or other malware nasties. None of us want those to spread around, thus this thread. It also will allow us to deal with links on the actual wiki pages in case things get really nasty.

If your anti-virus or other security software picks up on danger on such a site, post it here so others will be alerted.

Has that been an issue in the past? I mean, is there precedent?

Oh, I've picked up a couple of virus warnings while browsing around webcomic sites before. I think I once made a warning thread too (about Comic Genesis), but it's so far back it was easier just to start this new one.

Obviously, I can't speak for other tropers, although none have been exactly forthcoming on the issue.

I personally think it is a good idea however if the antivirus can say which virus it is then any troper that got infected might now what cure he needs to search for. However in terms of technicalities we might run into some people doing Antivirus Jihads which is a good idea to avoid.

Yeah, it has happened. Comic Dish, a hosting site, got hit with something a few years ago if I recall.

Alright, enough back and forth. Let's try to confine this thread to listing sites that are infected now. We don't need to get into a history of the deal.

Uh, what's the point? No, it's good to know which hosts are reliable, but... If you run around with javascript on, a warning one site wide changes just about nothing.

I don't know about infected, but Remus was hacked a few days ago. I've been doing what I can to bring it back online, but I'd recommend avoiding it until I get things put back where they're supposed to go.

The Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal site itself is fine, but I'm getting a malware warning if I try to follow the Weinersmith link.

Just went back to check on the Mystery Babylon site (from the post [up]), and it still had virus problems. I'm going to put a note on the work page.

Not actually a webcomic, but related to one: I have gotten tons of viruses from the Skaia Net imageboard, so much that I've just stopped checking it. Other users have noticed.

To clarify for those not familiar, I believe that's a imageboard devoted to MSPA and Homestuck art.

Do viruses show up at random when looking at any images from the imageboard, or mainly from searching on the board? I dom't think I've ever had problems with the website, but I mainly click links provided by others that go directly to images.

I've had problems when viewing the site period, but then again at the time my system was not terribly well protected.

I've had problems with fireball20xl.com in the past, and even on days when I wasn't getting infected, the site always came up yellow, or even red. Dunno if it's gotten better over the years, but I'm not really sure I want to risk checking.

Chasing the Sunset is Google-blocked. Probably a script injection in the comments.

I find this infecting of webcomic sites to be depressing beyond description. I don't need to ask if the jersk that did it know that this is how those people make their money, because they'd have to.

The "jerk" is likely a worm who found a link to the comic while crawling, you know.

Or some poor guy who posted a comment while infected.

Sidekick Girl has a new website thanks to the old host having infected ads. New site is http://sidekickgirl.net/ Do not use the old site.
