I once submitted a (horribly drawn) strip to Arbuckle, which was Garfield Minus Garfield before Garfield Minus Garfield, with the idea of redrawing the strip in a realistic style from Jon's perspective (no Garfield thought bubbles). I was more than halfway through drawing another one, but I lost that flash drive.
My mom says that the last good Garfield strip is the last strip in the first book with an announcement that Garfield merchandise is coming.
I've heard that PAWS ghost artists don't even draw the strip anymore, unless they need to show something that doesn't exist in their clipart library.
Fresh-eyed movie blogBut I actually thought that "Garfield" still was good only a year or so ago, when I suddenly stopped reading it on the internet. And I also liked "Orson's farm" most of the time.
Is the Boom! Garfield comicbook any good? I know it's written by Mark Evanier, but is it Garfield And Friends Good Evanier, or The Garfield Show Bad Evanier-like?

I have Garfield the best of his 35 years of comic strips. It's my favorite thing to read while on my break at work. ^^
"I don't give a rat's ass about going to hell. I guess it's because I feel like I'm already there." -MugenI like The Garfield Show.
I'm one of those guys that thinks that the strip hit its high point in the 90s, and went downhill from there, but I've also gotta admit that this one from a few months back◊ was hilarious.
Weird in a Can (updated M-F)Aow, that one must have hurt!
I do recall doing a few strip remixes, based off my mistake for years in thinking Nermal was a girl (because of the voice in Garfield and Freinds) and 'shipping him with Garfield.
You're hardly alone. The Latin American dubbers actually thought and played Nermal for a she-cat for several seasons.
Well, TIL Nermal is a male cat.
Woah, Nermal's male?
Ukrainian Red CrossLooking at the character, it's easy to think so. It didn't help that Desiree Goyette's voice in Garfield And Friends didn't sound male enough.
Incidentally, folks, Garfield And Friends was a hilarious, hilarious cartoon. Funny ass stuff. Who remembers the episode where Garfield shows a cartoon and asks the audience to spot the mistakes, and there are tons of them?
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."They fucking gave it eyelashes!
H.B. WardGarfield's real reason for hating Nermal is his incapacity to admit his confused sexual attraction towards Nermal's ambiguous genre identity. That's why he always wants to send him across the world, he doesn't want to face his own sexuality.
That was hilarious.
By the way, I discovered a new way to tamper with the atmosphere of Garfield comics. Just take a fitting strip and remove all thoughts and dialogue...
And you're left with a rather poignant piece of silent film.
H.B. WardGarfield used to have a bigger cast. Aside from Nermal, I know there used to be Arlene (haven't seen her in awhile) and the old lady who runs the diner...and Jon's neighbor, who, if I'm not mistaken, used to be Odie's owner rather than Jon.
Lyman?
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."...They phased Lyman out. What the hell?
H.B. WardLyman was actually Jon's housemate, not neighbour. He was originally in the strip for Jon to have someone to talk to, but over time Garfield himself took that role, and so Lyman became redundant.
Ukrainian Red CrossMost people don't even know that Jon's supposed to be a cartoonist. It hardly ever comes up in the strip, though it frequently did on the most recent animated series.
I found this video about lost Garfield media to be interesting. Has there really been no reference to Jon anywhere? It seems too major to miss.

Every now and then, Garfield still manages a chuckle out of me. It's clear the strip isn't what it used to be in the 80s and early 90s, but it was just too much a part of my childhood for me to ever dislike it.
Also, if you want some wacky remixes, check out Square Root of Minus Garfield. I've submitted a few there.
