Which namespace does this work belong in?

Go To

This is the sticky thread for questions related to the namespacing of works. As in, "which is the right namespace for this work?"

Ideally, questions already answered are covered on the Namespace Map. If you know a namespacing issue has already been resolved, but it is not yet documented on the Map, please update the Map.

If you want to suggest a new namespace, don't post here, but in Suggesting New Namespaces instead.

    Original OP:
I busy myself with moving works off of Main/ and I've encountered a number of cases where I can't decide to which namespace something should go. Some of these questions may have been asked before, but there seems to be no general reference point for namespace issues. Maybe this could become a sticky thread for all media-namespace related questions?

For easier reference, I've numbered my questions:

  • #1: Where do animated films go? They seem to be distributed rather inconsistenly over Film/ (Puss In Boots, Whats Opera Doc), WesternAnimation/ (Disneys Anne Frank, Snow White), Anime/ (Princess Mononoke) and Disney/ (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Der Fuehrers Face).
  • #2: There are a few songs which have their own pages ("Pirate Jenny"). Where do they go – to Music/ or to Literature/ ?
  • #3: Where do composers go – to Music/ , or are they to be treated like other creators, which hitherto stay on Main/ ?
  • #4: Where do Talk Shows, Game Shows and News Broadcasts go? I guess you could call these formats Live-Action TV but they're not really "TV series", as in Series/.
  • #5: Am I right in assuming that Puppet Shows go to Series/ ?
  • #6: What about “hybrid shows”, i.e. segment shows that incorporate both live action and animation? (e.g. Die Sendung Mit Der Maus)
  • #7: Where to put picture books? I am thinking of books like Der Struwwelpeter and Max and Moritz — books that are really not complete without their illustrations. They are not (yet) ComicBook/s, but to sort them under Literature/ feels a little unsatisfactory too.
  • #8: The rule is to put works into the namespace of their original medium. However, once in a while there is a work which is little known in its original medium, and almost exclusively known by its adaptation. I’m thinking of Das Boot, for example: there's a novel, but it is almost exclusively known by the Petersen movie.
  • #9: Should One Book Authors who are invariably tied to a single work be treated as a creator or a work page rather?— Currently, we have Samuel Pepys and Herodotus, but shouldn't these pages be at Literature/The Diary of Samuel Pepys and Literature/The Histories rather?
  • #10: There are cases where I’m unsure whether to use the English or the original title. Is there are hard rule that determines whether Der Ring Des Nibelungen goes to Theatre/Der Ring des Nibelungen or Theatre/The Ring of the Nibelung? Even Wikipedia uses the original title.

I'd be grateful for input.

I think this thread's title is dated. The OP started this thread with the intent of receiving answers to questions regarding media namespaces, but now this thread is about asking questions about them instead of answering the OP's existing questions. Thus, the "battery of questions" portion of the title is a relic of this thread's original purpose.

Renaming this thread was suggested a couple of pages back, but it didn’t actually happen. “What namespace should this work have?” or the like could work.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask then, but is there a known issue with links to the Video Examples namespace? As seen on Videos Without a Source, correct links seem to produce a redlink almost randomly, and I can't tell if there's really any pattern as to why some show as working and others are redlinks (though actually the majority seem to display as redlinks), even though all the Video Examples links on that page are valid links.

[up]Makes sense to me. Polybius sounds like a myth about a Fictional Video Game.

Conway's Game of Life feels misplaced to me. It's a cellular automaton with four rules published in a magazine, and I couldn't find evidence of an official "video game" release.

Since it relies on a grid (or a board), it can be considered a Tabletop Game, if you can call it a game. It may be worth having a discussion on whether games with minimal rules and imagery are worth having trope pages (see also: Tic-Tac-Toe).

[up] I don't think it works a Video Game because it isn't.

~AudioSpeaks2 Manhwa.Solo Leveling redirects to Literature.Solo Leveling. The description says it started as a Web Serial Novel before being adapted into a webcomic. So was it a Manhwa or not?

[up] It is a manhwa technically just the webcomic type, though I believe print copies of the manhwa exist.

[up][up][up]Web Serial Novel = Literature, same as with the former Light Novel namespace. Tons of those originated as web novels that were later bought by a publisher.

The question was if it was Literature first, then a Webcomic later, then which part makes it a Manhwa? If it's being Korean Webtoons, then many works on Korean Webtoons page should be moved from Webcomic/ to Manhwa/.

Should music videos like Michael Jackson's Thriller really be in the Music/ namespace?

They don't just trope the music, they trope the visuals and sometimes narrative of the videos. So aren't they more like short films and therefore be in the Film/ namespace or Web Animation/, Western Animation/, Anime/, and Animation/ if animated?

Or if the music and video are so intertwined in terms of troping, maybe a new Music Video/ namespace?

I would say maybe to that but music videos are still ultimately music, visuals or not. some with no visuals can still have a narrative too

Good point. It appears stop-motion, which still counts as animation.

The Namespace Map sandbox came up in a mod conversation just now, and there were some suggestions that we might want to merge that guidance into Administrivia's Namespace page.

Has that been discussed before? Is there any reason we wouldn't want to do it?

Series.Taliyus was brought up as being in the wrong namespace. WebOriginal/ was suggested as a replacement. Here's the work. Looks to me like Webcomic/ would work.

It says “Creating an animated series”, which would be WesternAnimation/, but until that actually happens (assuming it hasn’t happened yet), Webcomic/ is probably fine.

I know Patricia Taxxon makes video essays and commentary videos, but she's primarily a musician, in fact her channel is mostly music.

So she should probably be in the Music/ namespace primarily.

As this was flagged elsewhere, I've added Oratorio to the namespace map, under Music/.

  • Operas go under Theatre/ as they have acting, costume and props as well as a story.

  • Oratorios usually have plot, and have character roles for soloists, but they're closer to other classical music as they're only sung, not dramatised - there's normally no costume, no physical acting and no props. They were originally intended for church performance, so there wouldn't be a "stage", either.

The lines blur a bit - modern oratorios aren't always religious or performed in church, some use multimedia elements, and some popular oratorios have sometimes been fully staged as if they were operas.

But that's our proposed starting point.
