The first visual novel I played was Higurashi, much after watching the anime. Did not disappoint. I read Fate Stay Night since then (one of my favourites), Doki Doki Literature Club (I guess it counts... right?) and I'm trying to read Katawa Shoujo now.
My brother introduced me to Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors back in 09 or 10. After that he and I played the sequel Virtue's Last Reward. I haven't read many visual novels after those, but that how I came to know the genre.
Can't remember, but it might have been Ace Attourney?
Mine was Ace Attorney!
The Protomen enhanced my life.Ace Attorney. I've since played the latter two Zero Escape games, and I just started on YU-NO.
Nach jeder Ebbe kommt die Flut.Katawa Shoujo was the first one I played because it was free. However, I've been a huge fan of Higurashi for over 14 years, despite never playing a copy myself. I wish the Switch port would get a physical localization, but that's a pipe dream.
the visual novel that actually got me into playing way too many vns was one night, hot springs and One Thousand Lies. both probably will rank very high if i make a "top 100 video games/visual novels" list despite their obscurity
So that's what they do. They shine their lights at the other lighthouses, and at me.This is probably the worst introduction but Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, yep AVGN introduced me to VNs and he probably didn't even know it.
Art Museum Curator and frequent helper of the Web Original deprecation projectAce Attorney was my introduction but Batman the Telltale Series got me invested in the genre. While I prefer solving mysteries, the multiple paths keep me invested and add to the replayability.

I first got into V Ns through the TV Tropes page of Fate/stay night.
Now I've downloaded Ren'Py and am looking to create one of my own.
