Ahahaha I am so guilty of this. And this, although it's TV Tropes instead of Tumblr.
And the second one here, too. Oops, this one also. And this.
The black thing is because it's really tempting as a beginning painter to use black in your shadows. Unless you're really sure you want to do that, though, it's best not to. Shadows are rarely pure black, so you'll want to mix the appropriate shade to use (and this doesn't always involve taking the base color and adding in a few drops of black). Even black objects won't be pure black, except possibly in their most shaded area. And here ends the miniature painting explanation by a painting newb. This is another related one.
I didn't know this was a thing. I thought people did that just to parody the show, not for legit art?
Tumblr here.my natural choice for cartoon style would be Paul Dini. Or maybe Hergé
what is wong with that?
and that, what is it

The Quiet One. No OTT. No unfunny. No squick. No crusades. Harmless and clean.
So guilty of about half of those myself. especially looking at my older shit and being like "MY GOD THIS IS AWFUL"
Oh gosh, I'm an amateur at art but I know exactly what a bunch of these are talking about; they're hilarious.
Ah, and about the anime thing. Ask a person who likes to draw to show you some of their work. I'd say there's a 50% chance (being generous) that it'll be an emulation of anime/manga. Out of that percentage, I'd say there's a 5% chance of it actually being good.
Now the reason? Well the animesque style has a very strong appeal to it. If I had to hazard a guess I'd say it was the large, glittery eyes, fluffy hair and thin body type. Anyways, if you like something a lot you're gonna copy it, and, superficially, the style looks very easy to copy: large eyes, round faces with pointed chins, small nose and mouth, jagged/spiky hair; you get the idea.
Obviously there's more depth to the style than that, but a newb won't see those things. They'll blindly copy without paying heed to construction, planning, proportion or silly things like that *cough* . I try to tell people stuck in the style about these techniques but they all say they don't need them. It's their 'style', they'll do what they want.
Generally this doesn't lead to good art.
As for falling out of it. If you recognize the importance of art techniques and broadening your range, then your art will start to morph and improve immensely. (relatively well known example: Josh Lesnick, creator of Girly)
\\Your original 'style' will fall away and a new, unique style will eventually evolve. Ideally, though, this won't be your only style and you'll be able to emulate any other style successfully and comfortably. (relatively well known artist of the 'easily do anything' variety: Tracy J. Butler, creator of Lackadaisy Cats.)
I hope you enjoyed this unneccesarily long explanation. :)
It was't unnecessarily long: obviously you don't go to OTC much: there, walls of text are the norm rather than the exception.
I'm an engineer(ing student), one with a burning passion for culture, and a little talent at picking it up. I'm rather good with technical drawing by hand (although it really took me a while to figure out how to do this the clean way: I have very sweaty, sticky hands). But the only artist I know who uses those methods and techniques is Don Rosa. He is made of AWESOME, but he's almost as slow as Kentaro Miura.
The Quiet One. No OTT. No unfunny. No squick. No crusades. Harmless and clean. This is absolutely hilarious stuff, thanks :,D
What is this I don't evenArt newbie Owl is so totally me it's not even funny. >_>
Read my stories!
ASO, NO, ATO I'm not an art student, but I know quite a few of them, and I really found those pics hilarious, though there are still some references I just don't get. What's wrong with black paint? What are pageviews and why don't they matter? Are all newbies obsessed with using an animesque style? Do they all fail at ti or fall out of love with it eventually?
I found this pic particularly hilarious, in a sort of sad way...
