General Sonic The Hedgehog thread

I'm still gradually making my way through the DLC. It still irks me how many of Amy's moves use her cards, when she barely uses her Piko Piko Hammer at all in the game, which makes some of these moves feel a bit out of nowhere, even though all of their functionality was something she had previously been able to do with her Hammer (except for Poison Parry). And to think, they've been establishing for years, across media, that she's very emotionally attached to her hammers.

• Card Attack could've been Hammer Attack
• Card Spin could've been Spin Hammer Attack (Infinite Card Spin could've stayed, to explain why she doesn't get dizzy)
• Card Stomp could've been Spinning Hammer Attack (which might need to be reverted to "Hammer Whirl", given the above)
• High Card Jump could've been Hammer Jump
• Card Float could've been Propeller Hammer
• Multi-lock is a non-card move that actually could have been a card move, but as is, it's an upgrade to her old move Storming Heart

Also, after being blitzed and intimidated by Caterpillar+ at the start of the DLC when using Amy before I unlocked any moves, I'd stayed away from the Guardians for the entire time. Last night I finally got around to fighting some. At least, I started on Easy to remember what I'm supposed to do. I beat Catepillar+ with Amy for some payback. It seems it's just about dodging its projectiles then attacking it, no grinding section unlike the regular one. I then beat the Silver Hammer+ with Knuckles, and that one was rough. I think I'd switched back up to hard difficulty by that point, but even still, Knuckles has no range on his attacks and no height on his jumps, and parrying the projectiles is kinda pointless given how fast they fire.

I think the reason she primarily uses her cards over her hammer is due to them trying to bring that trait of hers back into the fore again. Similar to how Knuckles' job as Master Emerald guardian became a borderline Informed Attribute for several years until they finally brought it back.

Yeah, there’s actually a couple things in the last few years that have started re-emphasizing Fortune Cards as one of Amy’s primary “things.”

Heck, they even did it for her Classic incarnation, at least in one of the cutscenes in Origins.

It was a concerted push all at once.

"The most recent mainline comic arc to feature Amy as the lead character, 2021’s Trial by Fire arc, prominently features a sequence where she reads fortunes while camping with the girls. The Origins version of Sonic CD now bookends the game with scenes of Amy and her tarot cards. Sonic randomly mentioned it in a scene in Frontiers. And now, just this week, we got the (very cute, gorgeously illustrated) Amy’s 30th Anniversary comic with a story revolving around Amy’s tarot cards, followed the very next day by the Frontiers DLC in which she gets a brand new tarot-based moveset. Even her base melee attack now has her throwing tarot cards instead of swinging her hammer. Again, I like all of these individual things, but after years of it almost never coming up at all, it’s VERY noticeable that Amy’s tarot cards are suddenly everywhere."

I remember for the longest time the only other reference to her hobby besides CD's manual was Sonic Battle having her say "My cards told me I'd find you here!"

I'm all for it either way. It brings some much needed depth back for these characters and averts All There in the Manual.

I don't have a problem with them bringing her cards back. It's the manner and extent of her moveset that they did that feels weird to me, which is why I listed the examples I did. It's like how I have a problem with giving Sonic three projectiles. Sonic Boom feels fine to me. Homing Shot and Cross Slash don't. As the above link says:

Amy has 17 Skills in Frontiers: Jump, Parry, Cyloop, Boost, Poison Parry, and the following 12:

  • Ball: 3 (Double Jump, Homing Attack, Spin Dash)
  • Card: 7 (Card Float, Card Attack, Card Stomp, Card Spin, High Card Jump, Infinite Card Spin, Card Spin Boost)
  • Hammer: 1 (Cyhammer, not counting its appearance in Card Spin Boost)
  • Heart: 1 (Multi-lock)
• My preference, given the page topper changes:
  • Ball: 3 (Double Jump, Homing Attack, Spin Dash)
  • Card: 3 (Infinite Card Spin, Card Spin Boost, Multi-Lock)
  • Hammer: 6 (Propeller Hammer, Hammer Attack, Hammer Whirl, Hammer Spin, Cyhammer, Hammer Jump)

...anyone else getting a sense of deja vu about this entire conversation? I've been feeling it since my first post on it.

I too feel like we've been here before.

I've decided if I'm going to learn how to draw anthro characters, I should make Sonic be my influence.

On the flip side, the various Sonic media seem to be in a bit of an arms race to see who can give Amy the most extreme hammering moment. Just not Frontiers specifically.

She’s basically the team’s resident barbarian (in DND terms) these days.

Whne Amy does get a Modern Super form, her hammers needs to be Goldion Crusher size (IE, as big as a Planet):

Super Amy: Hikari ni Nare, Bitch!

that's one way to ensure Amy will never get a modern super form

Like its less the issue of if Amy is able to move the dman thing, but more sure the issue of gravitational pull (among other things)

Conversely, Excalibur Amy shouldn't increase the size of her Piko-Piko Hammer, but instead turn it into half-warhammer, half-poleaxe.

I do like bringing back the cards, but like Frontiers went WAY overboard with it.

I think it would've been fine if, say, the cards were there for her jump, double jump, and stomp - and then her regular attacks kept the hammer instead.

@Shirow Shirow: Fine, Super Amy can have the Goldion Hammer, The Planet Sized Goldion crusher can be Hyper Amy or Super Amy 2.

Cyber Amy or an equivalent could use the Goldion Finger instead, using 5 Goldion Crusher Sized hammers to wack the final boss to death instead.

Her Super Stars ability is fun to just spam.

Unlike a lot of people, I really like Amy's Frontiers personality (I know that it was mainly her gameplay being discussed, but thought I'd bring it up). I enjoy her more calm, all-loving, mature personality.

However, and this might be an unpopular opinion, I think Sonic Boom Amy (specifically the show, not the games as I haven't played them) is best Amy. Seriously, the comedic series which purposefully flanderised characters (I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Boom Knuckles, but would hate for him to act like that in the mainline games) has, in my view, the best Amy.

She's calm and collected (similar to her Frontiers portrayal), but has absolute craziness bubbling under the surface (similar to some of her older portrayals). She has a crush on Sonic (one that leads to humorous situations), but it doesn't overpower her other personality traits. She's talented and all-loving but has flaws such as sometimes thinking too highly of herself and thinks sometimes that her way is the only way forward (a nice mirror of Sonic, maybe they would make a good couple?). In my view, she is the best incarnation of Amy.

Year of Shadow TailsTube Time!

On a similar token, I think Boom Tails is one of the best portrayals of Tails we've gotten, and I think they should take more from that version.

Well, Boom Tails is a nice balance between the kiddy personality and the inventor one, two traits that tend to dominate depending on the game. So, sure.

Tailstube include scenes of Sonic Prime, I'm sure that will annoy someone (it was me! Not in a "GAH I HATE THIS!" and more like "Oh right, the canon thingy they are going for), and Sonic called Shadow a faker. Haven't heard that in a long time.

Yeah, I'm not so much a fan of the incarnations that treat Tails like a complete child.

Although, speaking of children, I did enjoy this video in which Sage tries to find a nemesis of her own (English captions are available):
