Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

So what he Flint got forcefully turned to evil and the comic just forgot and treats it as a genuine Face–Heel Turn

Other way around.

Initially, it was revealed Flint faked his turn to good and was masterminding working for Silver Sable as a way to get amnesty.

When nobody bought that a kinda dumb guy was that good at planning, they hastily revealed he was actually brainwashed into being evil by the Wizard.

What's crazy is that a lot of really good writers do the same, building off small details and such. It's just that Byrne has the absolute stupidest conclusions about those little details possible and seems totally schizophrenic about what details he notices and which he disregards. Like, he noted that one line in a single comic decades ago about Flint being on the FBI's most wanted list but didn't care to note any of the other countless comics establishing Flint as sympathetic/redeemable in little or big ways, and also never stopped to research how people get on the most wanted list and whether he could write Flint as being on there but still likable.

John Bryne is the type of writer who would somehow alienate even the most hardcore anti-Green Goblin people on this thread with his writing of the character.

Yeah, Flash whenever Byrne used him, was more of an exaggeration of Lee/Ditko's version. But ignoring any redeeming value in him.

Like when Spider-Man fleed from the Green Goblin fight way back in the original story and everyone thought he was a coward?

Kept in Byrne's Chapter One. But in the original story Liz mentioned Flash was so upset at his hero's rep going down that he got mad at her too.

Chapter One Flash, Liz mentions he almost took a swing at her.

As another commenter long ago said, it's surprising that Byrne didn't just reveal that Flash was faking at being Peter's friend.😏

I think Sandman is much more Intresting as a redeemed villain, think about it, there aren’t that many ways to defeat him, and he can’t really be used for big things without it just getting silly. He was an Avenger at one point, hopefully he’ll come back for one of the big β€œevery avenger EVER” events

β€œThis…….is God.”

Unfortunately, he's considered to be too iconic of a villain for any redemption to stick.

Latest Venom issue has him refer to Mania as his "child". Well, that's simpler than being a clone I guess.

Also "Zombiotes" are now a thing.

It's funny because Venom's popularity is way above Sandman, so Venom is too iconic to remain a villain if that makes sense.

It helps Venom's debut was close enough to the 90s that he could be promoted and given his own series.

Plus Venom had several successors who were/are evil, like Angelo, Mac Gargan, and Lee Price.

Closest are those split personalities he made during Brand New Day.

Come to think of it, he DOES have an adopted daughter who hasn't been used, and hates Spider-Man.

There was a one-off villain called "Sandstorm" who got powers from experiments that he performed on samples that he took from Sandman and Quicksand.

Villainess with the same powers as Sandman (while having no actual connection to him).

The obvious solution would probably be to just use Hydro Man instead, but knowing Marvel they'll give Flint a girlfriend with the exact same outfit and powerset.

Remember back in the 90s show where he had a crush on MJ and then when she was cloned, she had Hydro Man’s powers?

Or at least I think she did, she did disintegrate into water.

So I’ve heard Mania has appeared in Ewing’s Venom run. I wonder if Ewing is enough of a continuity fiend to actually finally resolve the infamous Accidental Downer Ending of the Daniel Way run, where Mania first appeared?

Mania was mentioned in the latest issue. It was described as less of a clone and more a regular spawn. Venom described not being able to grieve after it died.
