Webcomics Recommendations

And unless you go and take a poll, you have no way of knowing if EGS is one of the better strips out there. It's one of the popular strips (or at least one with a lot of tv tropes attention), but that does not make it automatically one of the better ones.

I would like to take this post to reccomend Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, it's a comedy thing, with unrelated arcs, but reocurring characters. Great art, and a rare example of fanservice of, well, manly men. It's great for anyone who knows video games, but if you don't, plenty of the jokes are still plenty accessible as long as you have a basic knowledge of Acceptable Breaks from Reality. Hell, I never played any of the video games and I failed to find more than a few comics where not knowing the characters ruined the punchline for me. The one problem I do see with it is that sometimes the writer focuses too much on her 'loser' oc, which can be annoying since he's kinda anti-manly.

AHR, you should compile a list of webcomics you would recommend to people, and why. I'd greatly like to see that.

I'm pretty far in, and I'm impressed! It makes me think of what David Willis could do if he broke out of his four-head restricted proportions.

@Hungry Joe: I'd second that reccomendation, but I'd also warn that the fanservice tends to be put in at odd moments, the art has almost been declining in uniqueness and the plot is even slower than EGS's. But yes, it is a good comic if you want some actual realism in your genderbending. Good for car enthusiasts too.

Oh yeah, the temporal mechanics are ridiculous, it's like, spring 2007 or something.

Ya see, I'm unable to reach XKCD art levels, so it all looks good to me.

The only other comic I know with weirder time shit, is the aforementioned Homestuck.

Don't get me wrong, I can't really draw very well either, it's just that if you go to the last page and go to the first page, the art style changed a lot, and I don't think it was for the better. Obviously it got more refined, but in general...

So how about you recommend us some good stories? I'm eager to see what your standards hold up to.

XD. Oh, I have my weaknesses just like everyone else. Despite my criticism of Misfile, I do genuinely like it.

I already reccomended Manly Guys.

I read Order Of The Stick (which I have no complaints but stay AWAY from the discussions),

Darths And Droids (the jokes can get old, and the plot can drag a bit)

Starfighter (yaoi comic...yeah...),

SUPEREFFECTIVE (hit and miss, but not bad for your standard nostalgia plot, suffers from CRAZYFACE CRAZYFACE as per usual),

Char Cole (well drawn, but sketchy, pokémon only seem to be from the first generation, nothing REALLY new, but unique enough to hold your attention),

Goblins: Life Through Their Eyes (Art is very YMMV, good overall plot, one of the few stories to do heart string tugging right, believe it or not)

Menage a 3 (for the lulz, I don't really like this series, I just laugh at its badness)

SMBC (updates every day, as a gag strip. Punchlines are usually good, although I miss the days when he had a darker form of humor)

Other good webcomics include Order Of The Stick (surprisingly, knowing your D&D is not essential), Gunnerkrigg Court (give it time, it improves) and Keychain Of Creation (incredibly awesome fights and good plot, although knowing about Exalted is a bit more necessary).

Dude, give Starfighter a read. It's a great comic.

As AHR's romantic counterpart, here are how my personal standards hold up:

• I like Penny Arcade, of course. It's probably the best-made video game comic around.

• Dinosaur Comics has always held a strong place in my heart due to its overall simplicity, yet sheer awesomeness.

• Gunshow Comic is usually quite off-beat, and while not always hilarious, has its moments.

@AHR: I was just about to recommend Manly Guys, I love every single panel of that bitchingly awesome comic.

@NLK Eh, you know. Sci-fi adventure. The storyline is top-notch, though. The fight scenes especially. But the interaction between characters steals the show, I would say. The author has a high level of insight into how professional cadets would communicate with each other. The character names are a bit gimicky, but it doesn't detract from the overall experience.

Give it a try. I think you'll like it.

What it does is let the characters have knowledge of the fourth wall in the same way as Discworld - they know it's a story and do their damnedest to fight back. So the smarter characters know that Keti Jones,daughter of a former adventurer,is bound to become a heroine and was raised in the real world to stop all this shit happening for her own good.

Since Theory of Narrative Causality is a natural force in Faerie,dropping Naïve Newcomer Keti into the School of Kung Shoe (yes,really) is like disturbing a still pond with a massive boulder.

Keti's a bit flat,but the ancillary characters are a lot more fun,especially Steve aka 'Cherry'.

NLK, AHR also finds yaoi implications in One Piece. She's not the greatest of judges. Guys alone on a ship ≠ men having sex.

Characters know they're in a story, eh? Reminds me of 1/0, which I think was already mentioned in this thread.

Yes. Yes it is. Anyone who does like yaoi and erhm...not entirely consensual stuff, this is a great series. It starts off pretty generic, but then something surprising happens — it keeps going. This thing has an actual plot. And an actual follow up on the psychology behind it all. Slow updater though, and the characters aren't too deep, but the art is great.

XKCD, Dr Mc Ninja and Penny Arcade are my M-W-F helpers.

So, against my instincts, I read Starfighter. Now, I'm not a yaoi fan. I have several yaoi fan friends, and my favorite way to enjoy boy love is as a bit of adorable fluff tucked into the corners of a greater story. But this? This was hawt. It was complex, and nerve-tingling, and the art was SO GOD DAMN AWESOME PERFECT. I absolutely love the artist's sense of planes and mass, the oh-so subtle colors here and there, and now I need to use the colors teal and yellow together somewhere. I don't care where. It must happen. Now excuse me while I link this comic to my friend who is a yaoi fangirl and obsessive over military boys.

I like rape, in all its forms. "THE MEN HAVE CAT EARS AS VIRGINS" doesn't do it for me.

Ahhh, fuck it, Ill just reread 8Bit Theater a third time.

I recommend that to anybody, IMO, its the bestest Webcomic ever.
