Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.

     Eddie's old post
Looks like we have a big page lock coming. Big in the sense of many pages and big in the sense that the pages to be locked are too big.

It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine

They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.

I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

No, I was just asking for what to name the pages, though I can do that if you prefer.

What I DID do was archive the Pokémon Just Bugs Me page.

Characters.Mahou Sensei Negima Two is still too long. It needs to be subdivided

@Old Man Ho Oh said: Another idea for Doctor Who: we divide it roughly by the folders.

  • Characters.Doctor Who Doctors
  • Characters.Doctor Who Companions (I'd argue that most of those listed under "Minor Characters and Non-Companions" are in fact companions) *
Astrid, River, Adelaide, the Next Doctor, Rosita and Lady Christina and MAYBE the Brigadier
  • Characters.Doctor Who Recurrers
  • Characters.Doctor Who Villains
  • Characters.Doctor Who Monsters (the last two maybe fitting together)

_____

I think this is the way to go. The only difference is that I'd lump the companions and recurring characters into one page (thereby sidestepping the Who Is And Is Not A Companion flamewar^W discussion). I'd have:

  • Doctors
  • Companions/recurring characters
  • Individual villains
  • Alien Races

What. I cut that page in half and it's still too long!?

Is there some way of counting the number of html characters on it?

Darker Than Black is currently soft-split into 3 sections. The first season, second season, and Post-2nd season OVA.

Perhaps we should treat the 2nd season and OVA as a seperate title? I was thinking Darker Than Black Twins Of The Meteor (the 2nd season is called Ryuusei no Gemini, translating more or less to Twins of the Meteor. The problem being that the 2nd season hasn't officially been liscensed and dubbed just yet.)

I could create the page and then we can just move everything from the 2nd season and OVA there, as those two sections are together equally as large as the first season's tropes.

If they get too big again we do this again.

Can I get CrowningMusic.Video Games unlocked so I can trim it? I have everything shoved into subpages all ready.

A thought to keep this from happening in the future: Since the issue with TV Tropes crashing happens at people having 500,000 characters inside a page, why not have a banner on every page that breaks a 400,000 character limit? It would state something like:

"Warning: The following page is HUGE, and may be in danger of causing server problems.

You can help by removing Natter, or by talking about cutting down useless information on the Discussion Page."

If a page grows to a dangerous 450,000 or 475,000 characters, the page could come under an immediate lock of sorts, with the same banner that we are currently using for Big Page Lock.

I don't know. It might encourage troublemakers to deliberately increase the page size.

[up]Yeah, I can see that happening. Is there any way of making the number of characters in a page visible? That was we could keep an eye on pages that are close to the limit.

@Fast Eddie: Thanks.

What if we had the above, but we added something that completely disallowed an edit above 500,000 characters? It would still be under a lock with 499,999 characters, however it wouldn't affect the entire site this way, and the article in question could have the "junk edit" wiped clean if need be.

EDIT: The lock would just make wiping the junk edit harder though... nevermind. >.<

[up][up] I don't think the number's 500,000, but there have been cases where the user can't edit any more. That's why Grand Unified Timeline got split into two, and then three pages to begin with.

I'm willing to help with the characters page for Kingdom Hearts. It looks like that one is divided by folders. Maybe go ahead and make each of those into a separate page?
