Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.

     Eddie's old post
Looks like we have a big page lock coming. Big in the sense of many pages and big in the sense that the pages to be locked are too big.

It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine

They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.

I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

I've seen how fast the Homestuck page updates, but I attributed that to its fanbase, and this is the first time I've seen it on this scale.

I think this is the correct place to ask, but forgive me if I'm incorrect.

An acquaintance of mine has just subdivided this page into smaller pages. Is there any chance I could have it unlocked so I could go ahead and change this into a list of links to its "child" pages instead?

If the page is going to be locked for its length, and no suggestion made by any of the others is approved, then may I make a suggestion.

The main page for Naruto has divided its tropes into two separate pages: "Tropes displayed by the series as a whole", and "Tropes displayed by individual episodes/characters". Couldn't we do something along these lines with Bleach?

  • Looks over the list*

I knew the Blaz Blue character sheet was getting way too big. It's currently soft-split between player characters and NP Cs and other characters related to the story. The NPC list is fairly short compared to the significantly larger playable character roster. It might be best to split the pages up alphabetically *AND* make a page for the NPC characters.

... Darker Than Black? Seriously? O_o *looks* Wow. That page has grown significantly since I made an edit back in September.

Seeing this topic reminds me of how large the Stand Alone Complex page is getting. It really pains me to do this (Like getting my heart ripped out kind of pain) but I guess I should make a YMMV page for that, and start moving over subjective tropes. I guess I could clean up some of the Natter and Thread Bait, but most of the info in those tropes are informative towards the series. I'll try to add to the Character page as well.

Wow, been ages since I posted on the forums.

Anyway, I was considering splitting the CM/VG page up by generation, so we would have pages like CrowningMusic.Video Games Gen 3 (and 4, and 5...)

Is this a good idea? If it is, should the pages be named differently?

I would just split them off into composers and/or the game itself. But for separating the folders, I'd probably go:

First Generation Of Video Games; Second Generation Of Video Games, Third Generation Of Video Games etc.

Honestly, CrowningMusic.Video Games could probably be split into pages based on it's current folders.

Awesome. Now, the Just Bugs Me page for the same.....it's already been divided five times, too. Any ideas?

[up]I think that's what shkle was getting at.

You could just archive a large chunk of it for the current date.

Could someone change my Simpsons example of Fridge Horror? I meant to say "Burns got away with attempted murder" but accidentally typed it as "Burns got away with murder." I came to this thread because the page was locked and there was a link to this thread at the top of the page.

I'm not sure what to do with the composers that don't have actual pages. Should I make a CrowningMusic.Other Composers or should I give each of them their own page and hope someone makes a full contributer page for them later?

The Mahou Sensei Negima Character Pages have been split into

But I'm not sure this is proper formatting. All we need to do is copy the code to the appropriate pages, but I'm not sure how the pages should be named.

[up][up]I'd say go with Other Composers, or something similar. If that composer's section of that page gets long enough, we can split that page off later.

Ok, so I added two more to the list. Just the generational folders need to be made and then everything can be moved. I think Old Man was working on those.

I'm working my way through the Grand Unified Timeline pages. Should be done pretty soon, as they're organized enough that the split is straightforward...
