Damn, maybe they really are stupid enough to start something serious...I know brinkmanship is sort of their "thing", but if they keep this kind of agression up they're bound to call the fire at some point...

The island is about 3 km (1.8 miles) south of the sea border and 120 km (75 miles) west of Seoul.

This —— is honestly really serious. I really hope nothing comes out of it.

Supposedly North Korea has issued a code 1, which is equivalent to our highest DEFCON. I think things are looking bad.

South Korea probably made the proper response to being shelled then.

You have a more credible source, Fornicator?

Also, I'm interested in seeing what happens. I have a friend in the U.S. military stationed in South Korea.

This is the dog.

There's info about that which isn't the dog in here though.

I never served the South Korean army, so I don't really know about this stuff.

Gotta say, this scares me a little bit. Never thought North Korea would actually, y'know, do something.

I should probably mention that I haven't payed close attention to North Korea.

No US sources have really picked up on this in great detail. I am seeing more about TSA screening and Bristol Palin on CNN. Also the Bush Sr. interview (WTH?)

Wait a couple of hours, the US news media won't say anything until the morning news rush.

This is alot more serious than the sinking of that corvette. Maybe the NK military has decided that the transition post-Kim will be too much for them and decided to go out with a bang? Did Jong-Eun decided to flex his own muscle or something? Any pyongyangologists here who would know or at least credibly speculate?

BBC World Service has reported that everything has gone quiet. South Korea is on its highest peacetime military alert. One South Korean marine killed, 15 injured.

This article has a bit more content, if anyone's interested. Maybe not be quite as bad as I initially thought, but still...damn.

^Oh, cool, thanks for the update. If only we had a dedicated news organization here in the U.S. that actually did, y'know, news.

DPRK fired more than 200 shells, while ROK responded with 80 shells and fighter aircraft.

[up]Yeah, that's the AP report. Here's another report, with video. CNN International

They've been getting more violent lately. Over the last 5 years there have been many little sea skirmishes, but this year they sink that warship. Then this. What are they up to?

America and South Korea should just buck up and end this thing.

Hell, NK would've been a better dictatorship to topple then Iraq.

My friend will probably be worried, as a south korean citizen he could be drafted and shipped back into a warzone.

Futures just took a bad hit from this it seems, nevermind the SK stock market. Wall Street is gonna feel that one in a couple hours...

As for finally just ending this thing, it all depends on what the final say in Beijing is.

God I hope china finally wises up and drops their asses. As in, completely stops supporting them. I get the feeling they've only just been doing it to oppose the U.S. in the first place, but I don't really think their instability helps anyone, including China.

[up][up]SK Won down 1%, SK government debt is now more expensive, gold price spikes.

[up]China, if it lets the NK fail, will have a massive refugee problem and no more buffer between the South/US and themselves.

Now 2 SK soldiers dead, 5 seriously injured, about a dozen lightly injured. NK claims SK fired first.

Edit: Now it's estimated that there were 100, not 200, NK rounds fired.

IIRC, this is the reason the CIA is shitting itself so much over whether or not North Korea has nuclear capabilities. The last thing we need is for a crazed dictator to conclude, "Welp, I'm hosed. Time to take everybody with me." *presses button*

They don't have ICBM's though, the worst they could do would be to blow up Seoul. And whilst that would be a horriffic tragedy on a scale unprecedented for over 70 years it still doesn't mean they can target America.
