- Badass Decay: Satsuki's characterization can be considered grating thanks to Adaptational Angst Upgrade and other tweaks to make her act more like her age.
- Iron Woobie: Ryuko's backstory is far from pleasant, but she carries on with her objectives anyway. Unlike Satsuki however, she doesn't see her Dark and Troubled Past as something she needs to keep secret.
- Stoic Woobie: Satsuki comes off as this when the story is in Ryuko's POV. However her internal monologue shows that she is affected by everything that happens to her and tries very hard to hide it. Underneath her facade, she very desperately wants to please her abusive mother and said mother's abuse has terrible effects on her psyche.
- Tear Jerker: Satsuki's situation in general is this.
