Wham Line / Fire Emblem

Go To

  • In Fire Emblem Gaiden, Alm hears one after defeating Emperor Rudolf, the ruler of Rigel (the enemy of Alm's homeland of Zofia), at the end of Alm's Act 4. It's less so in the remake due to the much heavier foreshadowing.
Rudolf: Your true name... Your true name is Albein Alm Rudolf. You are...my one and only son.
  • Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War:
    • Chapter 3: Lionheart Eldigan
Manfroy: (to Deirdre) Prepare for your rebirth. Once we erase all your memories, we shall introduce you to your new husband.
    • Chapter 5: Doors of Destiny
Arvis: I hereby sentence you to death for your acts of treason. No visits to the King today, Sigurd.
  • Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade:
    • Chapter 25E/27H has the line that prompts a face turn out of a slavishly loyal Professional Killer:
Sonia Reed: Once you've killed the Prince, kill Nino too.
    • At the end of Chapter 28 of Eliwood's Tale/Chapter 30 of Hector's Tale, the party is accosted by an Ice Dragon, which Eliwood's newly-acquired Durandal slays by its own accord. However, Nergal then shows up, and proceeds to drop one huge bombshell upon poor Eliwood:
Nergal: The ice dragon there...The beast slaughtered by your hand...That is Ninian. The girl you loved.note  / The girl who adored you.note
    • A more minor one, in Pent and Louise's conversation in the final chapter, which counts as one for Pent In-Universe as well:
Louise: Lord Pent, I... I will protect you as well. Along with the child inside me... our child.
  • Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones:
    • In Chapter 14 of Eirika's route, as Queen Ismaire of Jehanna lays dying, she calls out to a name, revealing that a certain gambling Myrmidon is more than he seems to be:
      Ismaire: ...Jo...Joshua... ...Joshua...
    • For much of the story, the player is led to assume that Emperor Vigarde is the Big Bad. In Chapter 14 of Ephraim's route, Lyon, speaking to his father, makes a surprising remark that reveals that Vigarde is actually a reanimated corpse.
Lyon: Father, when you died I couldn't accept the loss...
  • Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance has this line by the Black Knight, which changes much of the context on Greil and his legacy:
Black Knight: I would prefer it if you used your proper weapon, so that I might see you at your full strength... General Gawain, Rider of Daein.
  • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn:
    • In a base conversation before the Endgame, we have the reveal that all the Half-Breed Discrimination in this universe is based on a lie, which causes Stefan to briefly Go Mad from the Revelation.
Stefan: It's said that a union between laguz and beorc is a crime against the goddess. That's what we've always been told.
Yune: That's silly. I've never heard anything of the sort.
    • This line in part 1 of the Endgame after destroying Lekain's Blood Pact and discovering he had a second Pact.
Sanaki: Oh...I'll hang on to this. I promised to return this to its proper owner, Raven King Naesala.
-or, if said character is in your party-
Naesala: Oh! That one is mine!
    • On the final floor of The Very Definitely Final Dungeon, the party runs into a friendly face, Begnion's kindly Chancellor Sephiran, who'd been missing for most of the game. Empress Sanaki tearfully informs Sephiran that his old friend, General Zelgius, was actually the evil Black Knight. This prompts Ike to drop the following:
Ike: ...But that's probably not news to you, is it? After all, it was you he was taking orders from.
    • In the epilogue, provided you're fulfilled the Guide Dang It! conditions to see it:
Almedha: Because I have lost the power of my birthright, I thought... Maybe I wouldn't be able to... That I might not be able to recognize my own child. But when her own true son stands before her, no mother could fail to know. Oh, my son, you've lived and grown strong.
Kurthnaga: You can't mean... Soren is your son?...
    • Then beginning in Part 4, Chapter 3, and wrapping up in the epilogue there's this exchange involving Sanaki:
Lekain: The apostle of Begnion shall be the firstborn daughter of each generation in the line of Altina, first empress. She will give voice to the goddess. She will pass judgment, give prophecy, and protect her people and their lands.
Sanaki: That is... That is only because... I have not come of age yet!
Lekain: Oh, what a hysterical coincidence! That's just what the senate has been telling the people for years now! "Apostle Sanaki is too young to hear the goddess. Give her more time." How funny that the lie you've been living is the same lie we've been telling.
Sanaki: But, how... Explain yourself, Lekain!
Lekain: Poor false apostle... No one ever told you about your older sister, did they? She was the true apostle.
      Sanaki: I...had a sister?
Lekain: She died before you were born, assassinated along with Apostle Misaha by the heron clan. So the senate installed you, the second daughter, as the apostle instead.
Sanaki: [later in the epilogue] Wait...Sister! You're my older sister, aren't you?
      Micaiah: What do you mean?
Sanaki: It makes sense. All the pieces fit. The galdr of release... The goddess Yune's voice...
Micaiah: It's true. Inside the tower, I heard the voices of many hearts, and I knew. I am descended from Lehran and Altina. Misaha, the former apostle, was my grandmother.
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening:
    • In chapter 13:
Validar: [To the Avatar] Heh, heh. Such arrogance! You dare take such a tone... with your own father?!
    • While "Marth" had always been an enigmatic figure who hid much about herself, including her true gender, only while saving Chrom from an attacker does she reveal herself as his Kid from the Future.
      "Marth"/Lucina: [To Chrom] Father! No!
    • In Chapter 21, the following exchange takes place in a meeting with Validar regarding the last remaining gemstone, at which point Validar springs a trap in order to seize the Fire Emblem.
Validar: The Gemstones and the Fire Emblem can be... treacherous artifacts. A fact Plegia and the Grimleal sadly know all too well.
Lucina: "Sadly?" You speak ill of when the first exalt used them against the fell dragon?
      Validar: Yes I do, intruder!
    • In Chapter 22, Aversa decides to lay out some truths about the prior Arc Villains...
Aversa: You aren't listening. All of this—every word and action—has been orchestrated... Gangrel held the exalt in contempt, yes, so Validar and I used him. In life AND death. The king's demise threw Plegia into chaos. It drove the people to Grima... Now their life force and rancor can be laid before the fell dragon en masse. [...] Goodness! Now you're starting to sound like Walhart, the big bully... He intended to destroy Grima as well, you know. ...Our thanks, incidentally, for taking him off the stage for us.
    • In Chapter 23, Validar reveals a secret about the Avatar's parentage.
Validar: You carry my blood—the blood of the fell dragon. His soul slumbers within you. And now the time has come to awaken you both!
    • The end of Chapter 23 has The Hierophant finally take center stage and reveal the truth of their relationship to the Avatar.
The Hierophant: It is still written that Chrom died here at your hands. Or, perhaps to be more precise...mine.
      Chrom: Who are you, really?!
The Hierophant: I told you, I'm the Avatar. The Avatar that murdered you and became the fell dragon, Grima. When this "Marth" of yours decided to come back in time...I came with her.
The Avatar: Another version of me? But how...?
The Hierophant: *sigh* I can be so daft sometimes... It's really quite simple. I am you. Our only difference is the decisions we've made... Those vivid dreams you have—those are my memories. We share those memories because we share the same heart... Grima's heart.
    • In Lucina's B support with her siblingnote , she realizes that her sibling may be able to use Falchion, the sword that is limited to certain members of the exalt's bloodline.
Lucina: If you are, in fact, among Falchion's chosen, that is knowledge we need. There may come a time when it proves necessary for you to take it up.
      (The cheerful music stops)
Sibling: What, like if you're busy?
      (Somber music plays)
Lucina: Like if I'm dead, (sibling).
    • In Lucina and her sibling's A support, she convinces the latter to try wielding Falchion against a log, only for the sibling to fail. After Lucina leaves, the sibling takes one last swing, before being convinced that s/he was not chosen to wield Falchion and leaving. Then Chrom happens by and this line casts the entire scene in a new light.
Chrom: ...Hmm? What's this log? Was someone training? Hmm, split perfectly in two. I've never seen such a clean cut before...
  • Fire Emblem Fates
    • After fighting Flora on Birthright, the Avatar, along with Flora's sister Felicia, are trying to talk sense into Flora, who admits that she was forced to fight against you in the chapter because Garon threatened to destroy her village. It seems like the Avatar might succeed, as s/he did with some of the more sympathetic adversaries, but then...
Flora: Nothing will change the fact that I betrayed you. Not to mention my own flesh and blood. For that... I deserve to die.
    • To those who haven't played Conquest or Revelation, Garon's final lines after being defeated as Birthright's final boss hint at there being more going on with him than it seems...
Garon: No matter, I feel at peace now. How long has it been since I felt like this? Perhaps this is all I wanted all along... The sweet release of death... My... my body was destroyed. My mind... lost... Ever since that moment... I became... something... something...
    • This reveal is spelled out more directly halfway through Conquest.
Azura: The man you call father is not King Garon. Not anymore.
    • And at the end of Conquest, in case you were deluded enough to think you had won after beating Garon...
    • In Chapter 24 of Revelation, after defeating the protagonist's resurrected mother, Queen Mikoto, Mikoto makes the following revelation when speaking to the protagonist.
Mikoto: I was born here, in Valla. And you... you are part of the Vallite royal line.
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses:
    • At the end of Chapter 8, Rhea says the following to you. This comes as a surprise both to your character and Sothis (the girl inside your head), since neither of you knew the goddess' name or Sothis' real identity.
Rhea: May the goddess Sothis protect you.
    • If Byleth chooses to lead the Black Eagles house, during their C+ Support with Edelgard, she will reveal that she was experimented on as a child to give her a second Crest:
Edelgard: I have kept it hidden all this time, but... I will reveal to you the power of my second Crest. It is the same as yours... The Crest of Flames.
    • During your monthly exploration of the monastery in Chapter 11 on the Black Eagles route, you can have what seems to be a completely innocuous conversation with Edelgard where she asks you to accompany her to the Imperial capital of Enbarr on some errand. Then the game tells you this.
"This decision will drastically change the story."note
    • You spend most of the first half of the game fighting a mysterious masked villain known as the Flame Emperor. The beginning of the Black Eagles Chapter 11 monthly battle drops this bombshell on you when Adrestian forces loyal to the Flame Emperor invade the Holy Tomb to steal the relics within:
Bernadetta: Edelgard... Did you know about this?
Edelgard: Yes. In fact, I gave the order. I am the Flame Emperor.
    • Seteth and Flayn's A Support finally reveals their true identities, which have been merely heavily implied up until then.
Flayn: I shall allow you to worry about me enough for yourself and mother both. But only that much and no more, my dear father, Cichol.
      Seteth: Thank you, Cethleann.
    • Just before the final battle of Crimson Flower, the Imperial army has cornered the remaining Church of Seiros forces in the Kingdom capital of Fhirdiad, but are uneasy about what Rhea and the rest of the church plan to do in their desperate situation. Rhea then gives Catherine the following order, which surprises and horrifies even her:
Rhea: Now, Catherine. Set fire to the city. The Imperial army will burn in the flames of eternal torment!
  • Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes has an example similar to the above prompt with Edelgard. In Chapter 10 (Golden Wildfire and Scarlet Blaze) or Chapter 12 (Azure Gleam), you get the following text box in the preparations screen: "Your actions in this battle will greatly impact the outcome of the story." This refers to the fact that you finally get the chance to recruit Byleth and Jeralt in this chapter. Doing so not only unlocks them as playable characters, but also leads to two extra chapters later on. Failing to recruit them costs you not only them and the bonus chapters, but also Judithnote , Randolph, or Rodriguenote , and a handful of support conversationsnote .
  • Fire Emblem Engage:
    • At the end of Chapter 20, Griss, after being defeated, hands over Celica's ring and taunts Alear to summon her. After Alear does so, he realizes what Alear is, then spells it out to them.
Griss: You think you're a Divine Dragon? Lemme set ya straight. You are the child of the Fell Dragon!
    • In Fell Xenologue 4, after Nel kills the Ivy and Timerra of that universe, Alear calls her out on it, only to get the following response.
Nel: I did not kill them. It is impossible to take a life that has already been lost.
      Alear: What? Explain yourself.
Nel: Those were no harmless little humans. Those were the Corrupted.
    • In Fell Xenologue 4, Nel, after making an emotional confession of how important her universe's Alear was to her, runs away, with the Four Winds following her to ensure she is safe. Nil, who is alone with Alear, then shares some things he knows about his sister, before dropping the following line.
Nil: But there is one thing I do not know and am ever so curious about. How will she handle losing the one she cares about most a second time?
    • In Fell Xenologue 5, a flashback sequence sees Sombron dropping this bombshell.
Sombron: My pawns move as I will them to, without hesitation. but I wonder. How long will that son of mine keep up this ruse of being Nel's twin? After all, her real twin is no more. That failure died long ago.
  • Fire Emblem Heroes
    • The final line of Book IV Chapter 12 has Freyja deliver horrifying news to the heroes, after they discover that the Summoner looks like Alfonse. The next chapter reveals she's lying through her teeth.
Freyja: I don't suppose you CAN remember what happened... If you could recall, the dream would likely collapse. Be that as it may, the truth is that this mortal you care so much for, Prince Alfonse, defeated death... And with that, He Who Created Everything, Alfaðör, has decided... Prince Alfonse could no longer be allowed to exist. [...] Prince Alfonse is gone. You will never see him again!
    • The final line of the Book IV ending movie sets up the setting of Book V.
"Líf": On your guard, Alfonse... Niðavellir is at hand.
    • At the end of Book VI, Chapter 3, Veronica, princess of Embla, learns from her relative and older sister figure Letizia that she has been accused of murder, treason and stealing a forbidden tome. Letizia then concludes that someone is trying to frame Veronica.
Veronica: Wh-Who would do something like that to me?
      (the music stops)
      Letizia: I would.
    • In Book VI, Chapter 6, Letizia, after being defeated, smugly assumes that Veronica has already been executed, but then gets the following bad news.
Embla Soldier: Director Letizia! I have a report! The princess has been removed from her cell, and...and—
Letizia: The next words out of your mouth had better be that the execution has proceeded without incident...
Embla Soldier: The guards released the princess! They let her go!
    • In Book VII, Chapter 2 (which is sixth due to Anachronic Order), the heroes find Kvasir, a mysterious girl who found the Summoner, but Kvasir introduces herself as an enemy.
Kvasir: Do you not recognize me? Then let me explain in plain terms. I will not always take this childish form; I will grow... and when I've grown, I will take another name. I will be known as Gullveig, the Golden Seer.
    • At the end of Book VII, Chapter 4, Seiðr, after cornering Kvasir, realizes that if Kvasir is Gullveig in the past, and Gullveig exists in the future, there is only one person Gullveig can be in the present.
Seiðr: When performing the Rite of Light, I was unable to sense her at all. No matter how I searched...I could not find her. Which means... ...Which means...I am her. Kvasir is...me. And I...become Gullveig.
    • Book VII, Chapter 9 has the following exchange, which reveals that King Njörðr was responsible for making Seiðr into Gullveig, and is thus the true villain of Book VII.
Njörðr: You have played your part well, Seiðr.
Seiðr: My part? What do you mean, King Njörðr?
Njörðr: The golden serpents that grew in Heiðr now grow in you. All is as I have planned.
    • Book VII, Chapter 10 ends with Njörðr summoning Gullveig, only for her to turn on him.
Gullveig: To destroy the world, kill the mortals, and... I am here to end you as well.
    • In the Forging Bonds event for Chrom: Fell Exalt, Chrom and his companions seemingly defeat Validar, but Chrom sees that his friends are all dead, except for Robin, much to Chrom's horror.
Robin: What are you going on about, Chrom? There's no need to act so surprised. (Robin's sprite changes to that of a Grima-possessed Robin) After all... You're the one who killed them.
