  • Some fans find Symmetra's default character design impractical, unfitting with her personality and giving the impression that the designers tried way too hard to push her Ms. Fanservice aspect.
  • Sigma's design is well-received for the most part, but a feature everyone has made notice of ever since he was revealed is his bare toes. Even if one takes into account the reasoning from the official artists — among other reasons, this was meant to evoke an "asylum" look and Sigma's psychosis — they can still stick out very awkwardly, mostly because 95% of the rest of his body is covered up in heavy armor.
  • Zarya has notoriously had a lot of skins considered mediocre to laughable to outright bad by many players.
    • Her infamous "Cybergoth" and "Industrial" skins are considered the pinnacle of bad Overwatch skins, mixing in a garish, Goth aesthetic that clashes really hard with Zarya's ingrained Husky Russkie theme.
    • Her "Siberian Front"/"Arctic" skins are generally agreed to have a cooler, more-fitting aesthetic and theme for Zarya, but is almost negated due to her goofy-looking goggles.
    • Her Winter Wonderland-exclusive "Frosted" skin drew some complaints due to it being almost exactly like the 3-times-cheaper "Dawn" skin, sans slightly brighter colors, sleeves, and a light bit of snow on her hair. The skin does recolor her gun to pink, which many fans are fond of, but similar to the "Mei-rry" skin below, the exclusivity is still a turnoff.
    • Some of Zarya's later skins such as her "Cyberian" and "Totally 80's" skins are generally considered a relative improvement, but still divisive among fans (and in case of the latter, even the developers).
  • Sombra's punk-themed skins have a similar reputation. The clothes and hair are fine, but the full-face skull makeup is considered way too much and not befitting of her more low-key personality. Hero shows us that the Los Muertos gangsters she used to pal around with do paint themselves that way, but it's supposed to only be visible in the dark, which leaves her looking more like a delinquent witch doctor.
  • Despite her past as a dancer being so significant to her character, Widowmaker's Swan Lake-themed ballerina skins are generally considered garish and unflattering, especially since her icy body language tends to lose some effect when she's covered head to toe in makeup, ribbons and frills.
  • Fans were disappointed that Mei's Winter Wonderland skin "Mei-rry" was classified as legendary, despite simply being a recolor with 2 accessories added, which fits the criteria for Epic skins. The Cryo-Freeze block becoming a snowman (complete with a hat) lessened the pain somewhat, but complaints still stood.
  • Hanzo's Winter Wonderland-exclusive "Casual" skin, based on his One-Scene Wonder cameo appearance in "Reflections", initially got quite a bit of flack for a bunch of really inexplicable design choices, namely his new, partially-gray haircut, his droopy pants with a questionably-placed gold dragon on its backside, and what was likely a brown jacket instead changed to black. Fortunately, the outcry was loud enough that Blizzard announced the skin would be updated to fix the more egregious faults, especially his beard and haircut.
  • Winston's Archives-exclusive "Specimen 28" skin. It was Winston's first new legendary skin in over a year and its design put many players off, not only due to its aesthetic, but also because it looks very similar to Winston's default skin. Unlike Mei's "Mei-rry" skin (see above), "Specimen 28" has enough model changes to be considered legendary, though players still dispute its status because, as mentioned before, it looks very similar to his default skin.
  • Tracer's "Lightning skin" caught a lot of flack when it was revealed, mainly due to a lot of players finding its blond fauxhawk hairstyle jarring and unfitting for Tracer's character design. It is at least somewhat mitigated by being an epic-class skin instead of a legendary and by being exclusive to the Anniversary event, which also introduced her well-received "Graffiti" skin.
  • While the idea of skins with color palettes based off of team logos is neat, most of the Overwatch League skins just look plain gaudy. Special note to the yellow and red colors of Florida Mayhem skins between 2018-2019, which many people joke about making the cast look like McDonald's employees (2020 saw the team rebrand to Synthwave-inspired black, hot pink, and blue, which was much better-received).
  • While the Romance of the Three Kingdoms skins have generally been positively recieved, Hanzo's Huang Zhong one has been decried as unintentionally hilarious due to the attempt at a beard looking more like a crude fake beard glued on his face.
  • The Overwatch 2 redesigns of several heroes have generally been well-received, but some have been criticized as being a little too overdesigned compared to their originals. Widowmaker's redesign in particular has gotten mixed attention due to her receiving some vest-like armor in lieu of her usual skintight bodysuit, yet still fits the shape of her boobs.
