They Wasted A Perfectly Good Plot / Dhar Mann

  • "Mom Calls Cops On Mexican Neighbors" is your average Dhar Mann video about a bigot needlessly harassing her new neighbors and accusing them of being thugs and criminals on the basis of them being a minority. A key difference? The bigot in question, Candace, is a black woman. The video could've explored how perplexing it is for a woman of color to discriminate against those of another marginalized race, possibly by having Candace face racially motivated harassment herself that triggers a Heel Realization. Instead, the story goes through many of the same beats as other "Racist Karen" videos, to the point where the role of Candace could be recasted by a white woman without anything of substance being lost. Ironically, that would later happen in "Racist Mom Calls Cops on Neighbors" on the Dhar Mann Bonus channel two years after "Mom Calls Cops on Mexican Neighbors", with the latter video practically being a beat-for-beat remake of the former episode, with the Mexican neighbors being black and the racist mom in question being white.
  • "Tattooed Girl Shamed in Church" suffers from a similar case of wasted potential as "Mom Calls Cops On Mexican Neighbors." The video focuses around a judgmental woman named Karen (yes, really) who spends much of the video harassing and demeaning her new neighbor Leslie over her appearance—namely her tattoos, as the title suggests. The video culminates in Karen hassling Leslie when she runs into her at church, suggesting her tattoos make her "sinful" and that she's a criminal. You'd think either Leslie or Karen's mother (who objects to her daughter harassing Leslie) would call her out for how horrible is for her to be making such disgusting assumptions about another Black woman on the basis of her appearance. And given the religious setting of the video, some points could've been raised about how people like Karen use their Christian faith as a weapon to judge others for not living the way they think is "proper." All that complexity is ignored in favor of a generic "don't judge a book by its cover" message and Karen abruptly changes her ways after Leslie saves her mother's life and opens up to her about her Dark and Troubled Past.
  • The misleading trailer for "Disabled Woman Shamed at Store" seemed to promise a deviation from the typical Dhar Mann formula. Rather than being a one-dimensional bully who inexplicably dislikes disabled people, it seemed Jenny would be an antagonist of the Innocently Insensitive variety, genuinely wanting to help Wendy out of a misguided belief that Disabled Means Helpless. This could've led to a touching conclusion where Wendy gingerly tells Jenny that, while her intentions are good, her assumption that Wendy needs constant assistance because she's disabled is a bit insulting. Instead, Dhar Mann chucks all that potential subtlety out of the window and makes Jenny an obnoxious woman looking to "help" Wendy so she can post about it online and look like a saint. Jenny even goes as far as to follow Wendy out to the parking lot to accuse her of "being ungrateful for all she'd done for her," definitively killing any semblance of subtlety this story could've had.
  • "Popular Girl Fat Shames Student", features some depictions of eating disorders as Meagan encourages her friend Tania to starve herself and purge, with Chelsea revealing to them about having suffered from one in a flashback. Had the episode been longer, the plot could've focused on the effects and harmful nature of such illnesses with Meagan and Tania, with the latter possibly getting away from Meagan to better herself. With Meagan later on bonding with Chelsea, making up with Tania, and apologizing to both once she gets help. Instead, most of this is brushed aside in favor of a plot of Meagan wanting the school quarterback Vinny to ask her to prom, only for him to choose Chelsea because of the generic message of beauty matters more on the inside, not the outside. Furthermore, the implications of Meagan having the same starving and purging habits she was forcing onto Tania was Left Hanging.
  • "Controlling Girlfriend Gets Dumped" culminates in Raji (the titular controlling girlfriend) bringing her boyfriend John to meet her father for the first time, with Raji fretting about it due to claiming her father is a Boyfriend-Blocking Dad. The meeting in question could've served to reveal that Raji's father is just as controlling of her as she is of John, thus explaining why she treats her boyfriend she way she does. This could've also led to an emotional conclusion where John points this out to Raji and she admits to taking her frustrations with her father out on John, apologizes, and helps him make amends to his friends. Instead, Raji's father is shown to be a completely decent man, leaving it a mystery as to how Raji came to be so controlling and overbearing to the point where she's talking about marriage and starting a family with John while they're still in high school.
  • In "Gay Son Forced To Marry Girl Parts 1 and 2", with the reveal that she did have a secret lover all along like Dev has with Andrew, had Latika actually had more screentime, there could've been a plotline involving Dev and Latika bonding with and lamenting about their situations together. And with Andrew also knowing her, the three interacting with and trying to do something about the Arranged Marriage together would've been compelling to see. Latika's partner also actually getting involved with the storyline would've made more sense as well. Furthermore, it would make Latika's reveal at the ceremony not an Ass Pull at all.
    • Alternatively, Latika having a girlfriend or being asexual alongside Dev being gay would've been even more interesting as then it would raise a much bigger conflict with the marriage ceremony and how parents shouldn't always assume that all their kids would be straight.
  • Had "Dad Abandons Wife And Teenager" been a longer episode then there could've been a plotline showing how Sam's kids reacted to the whole situation with his ex-wife and how they both cope with it, considering how his son briefly questioned him at the beginning when Charlotte and Amelia showed up. Furthermore, had Amelia shown a bit more emotion and distress to what her dad did to her and her mom instead of just happily accepting it with no issue then her behavior would've been a lot more believable.note  Also, the kids interacting with each other would've been more engaging, especially if Amelia reveals that she might've been jealous of them as well. Lastly, the termination papers Sam gave Charlotte in the end should've had a lot more impact in the plot than what was shown as well.
  • In "Teen Hides Hangover From Mom", the party Paris and Rachel go to barely lasts a minute or so before moving on to the next scene where the title comes into play. At two points it's mentioned how Paris somehow managed to break the TV at Alisha's house in her drunken stupor. While the episode was about Paris hiding her hangover from her mom, the larger events of the party and the aftermath of it would've given more context to the plot and make things more interesting. With how long the recent storylines are, it's kinda surprising whenever there's a video shorter than 15 minutes tops.
